Jerry Burns was named University of Iowa head coach in 1961 at the young age of 34. Iowa was a national powerhouse back then, but he ran it into the ground due to infighting with former head coach and athletic director Forest Evashevski. Dude is a football lifer. Was a pretty big story in the '60s
I watch this every couple of months or so - it’s the greatest, most entertaining rant ever. Only Burnsie could drop dozens of f-bombs and go as far as to call Viking fans f’ers without offending anyone. He was one of a kind and beloved by all Viking fans. RIP.
Packer fan here. As you know, our team sucked bad in the 80's. But is was always fun to see what Burns or Ditka might come up with in their press conferences. Also, some of those Vikings teams of the 80's were pretty damn good. Too bad that they just happened to coincide with some of the most dominant teams the NFC has ever seen - Giants, 49'ers, Redskins, Bears. Damn, talk about competition!
Burns. Really a good coach and quite a character. Zimmer said Burns reminds him of himself. He reminded me of Rocky Balboa's manager in Rocky I. Guys on the team used to play jokes on Burnsie. He was known for pacing the sideline with his head down, thinking. Guys would put loose change on the ground and make bets if Burnsie would pick it up or leave it, knowing he wouldn't usually turn down a nickel, dime or quarter if he found one
Carl Ruf That’s frickin’ priceless!! I laughed harder at that than the video! I’m still laughing and crying. When someone reads this comment two years from now I may still be ROFLOL.
I remember watching him growing up - I am amazed he was only in his late 50s and early 60s when he was the Vikings' coach - he always looked ancient. And his voice sounded like an old-time movie actor from the classic film noir era.
I agree. The funny thing is Burns and Zimmer were roughly the same age when they began their Viking coaching career. To me it looks like a 20 year difference.

Rest in peace, Burnsie. Fun fact: Bob Schnelker caught the first NFL touchdown pass thrown by Fran Tarkenton. I was working as a TV sports anchor when this post-game event happened. We had a photographer at the game and he caught this video too. When he came back to the newsroom, he handed me the tape and said, "You have to watch this. From beginning to end." I had to bleep it, but I did use the best parts on my show that night.

The Vikings went 8-7 in 1987. There was something magical about that team, The Vikings were 7 point underdogs (I live in Vegas) against the Saints and that game was over early. They went to San Francisco to face the 2-headed monster (Montana-Young).The Vikes were leading 13-3 and 'Frisco was driving when Najee Mustafa (used to be Reggie Rutland) stepped in front of a sideline pass for a interception and a TD to make it 20-3, The Vikings trailed the NFC Championship game 10-7 5 minutes in to the 4th qtr. Minnesota had 4th and goal at the 1 and kicked a FG to tie it and they never scored again .
The Vikings were better than their 8-7 record. 1987 was the strike season, with three games played by replacement players. The Vikings’ replacement team was arguably the worst in the NFL, losing all three games (against divisional opponents, no less).
Everything about this makes me happy. The best part tho was just as he was leaving the podium Burnsie couldn't help himself, he had to let out one last "f*ckers" under his breath. Chefs kiss
Only a journalist covering the Minnesota Vikings would be bent out of shape about the team winning a game using only field goals. I feel for Burnsie here
Thank you Coach Burns. I was at that game. Incredible. We blocked the field goal in OT (Merrieweather) and it's out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Vikings win by 2.
"I mean sh*t. We call a f*cking slant pass with a double team on Zedarius Smith and nobody f*cking blocks the f*cker and Cousins gets sacked. That's not Stefanski's fault. Sh*t. Next series Cousins f*cking hits Thielen on a post on 3rd and 2 or 5 or 14 whatever the f*ck it was and I love Bradbury, but it was a stupid f*cking play by Bradbury and he gets called for sh*t, f*cking ineligible man downfield and then f*cking Smith gets another f*cking sack again because the line didn't f*cking adjust. They f*cking score again after that. F*cking Aaron Jones goes 60 yards or whatever the f*ck it was and scores a touchdown and sh*t, that's not Stefanski's fault. I go on UA-cam and look at the comments and they're f*cking booing him. F*ckers." I had a lot of fun writing this as a Packer fan lol.
BTW Jerry Burns is a much better coach than he is often remembered. He had a great team with potential that got ripped apart by Mike Lynn in the disastrous Herschel Walker trade. From what I read, coach Burns was not consulted on the trade.
Remember watching this game on TV. The vikings won with no offensive touchdowns and seven field goals from Rich Karlis including a late one to tie the game at 21 after the Rams made a 14 point run for the lead late in the fourth. Then in overtime some guy for the Vikes blocked a punt for a safety and the win. Sometimes you win even when you don't play well enough to win.
Rest in peace Burnsie

This is thee realest coach I’ve ever heard speak. Rest with god burnsie
The best RIP
Everything about this makes me happy. The best part tho was just as he was leaving the podium Burnsie couldn't help himself, he had to let out one last "f*ckers" under his breath. Chefs kiss
He did a sensational fucking job! Kicked 7 goddamn uhhhhh uhhhhh field goals.
Only a journalist covering the Minnesota Vikings would be bent out of shape about the team winning a game using only field goals. I feel for Burnsie here
Love this dude. Actually holds his players accountable.
Wonderful. Truly one of a kind. R.I.P.
anyone else here from dorktown?
Epic rant, first time I've ever seen this. I love coaches that are like this, straight forward and lively!
Thank you Coach Burns. I was at that game. Incredible. We blocked the field goal in OT (Merrieweather) and it's out of the back of the end zone for a safety. Vikings win by 2.
Actually a blocked punt out of the end zone for the safety in OT for the win
@@paulsonj72 Yes, thank you my error! That was a blocked punt, not FG.
thanks for all the memories Burnsie
I watch this after every Vikings game and just change the names, it helps me cope
F*ckers."
I had a lot of fun writing this as a Packer fan lol.
I watch this in the morning....really gets the blood flowing
Just for the record, this is over 200 F words an hour. That might be a league record. (17 in 4:45)
No one has ever come close to this! Lol
Jerry Burns could always give a Great Press Conference!
Love you Coach Burns. Rest In Peace.
BTW Jerry Burns is a much better coach than he is often remembered. He had a great team with potential that got ripped apart by Mike Lynn in the disastrous Herschel Walker trade. From what I read, coach Burns was not consulted on the trade.
that is funny shit today but that day he was serious thanks Burnsie you rock.
