I'm Indonesian, and i don't know what mean of this anthem,, but always i'm listen this anthem. this is make me feel a nationality, love, family, and struggle.
its original title is the canto degli italiani (IL Canto Degli Italiani) this is the title that its author Goffredo Mameli gave it when he composed the piece, in 1847. but in his honor, we in Italy, call it anthem of Mameli. Captain Goffredo Mameli was a patriot and fought for the unification of Italy, he died in battle while defending the Republic of Rome. he was only 21 years old. he never saw a united Italy, but he dreamed of it, imagined it, researched it and wrote it in his songs, long before all this happened. there is no song more appropriate to be our national anthem. in fact it is a symbol of struggle, brotherhood and unity. the song metaphorically refers to various Italian historical events. first verse: Brothers of Italy Italy has awakened, Of Scipio's helmet She put her head around it. Publius Cornelius Scipio, known as Africanus (253-183 BC), was the Roman general and politician who defeated the Carthaginians and Hannibal in 202 BC. C. in Zama (now Algeria); the battle decreed the end of the second Punic war, with the overwhelming victory of the Romans. Italy, now ready for the war of independence from Austria, figuratively puts Scipio's helmet on its head as a metaphorical reference to the heroic and valiant deeds of the ancient Romans. Where is the Victory? Give her your hair, What a slave of Rome God created her. It refers to the ancient custom of cutting the hair of slaves to distinguish them from free women; the latter, to underline their status, used to keep their hair long. The goddess Victoria, represented as a woman with long hair, should therefore offer her hair to be cut as a sign of submission to Rome: the meaning of the quatrain is Mameli's certainty that, in the event of an insurrection against the Austrians, Victory will not be able than being Italians because it's destiny that wants it that way. Let's gather together as a cohort We are ready to die Italy called. The cohort was a combat unit of the Roman army, made up of 600 men: it was the tenth part of a legion. “Let us band together” is therefore intended to be an exhortation to present ourselves to arms without delay, to remain united and compact, willing to die, for liberation from the foreign oppressor. We have been for centuries Trampled upon, mocked, Because we are not people, Because we are divided. Collect us one Flag, a hope: To merge together The hour has already struck. Let's gather together as a cohort We are ready to die Italy called. It is a reminder of the desire to gather under a single flag: hope of unity and shared ideals for an Italy, that of 1848, still divided into seven States (Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, Papal State, Kingdom of Sardinia, Grand Duchy of Tuscany, Kingdom of Lombardy-Veneto, Duchy of Parma, Duchy of Modena). Let's unite, let's love each other, the Union, and love They reveal to the People The ways of the Lord; We swear to set free Native soil: United for God Who can win? Let's gather together as a cohort We are ready to die Italy called. Mameli was a convinced supporter of Mazzini and in this verse he interprets the political plan of the founder of "Giovine Italia": that of arriving, through the union of all the Italian states, at the creation of the republic. “For God” is a French term (and not an expletive), which means “through God”, “from God”, here understood as a supporter of oppressed peoples. From the Alps to Sicily Everywhere is Legnano The battle of Legnano, in 1176, is the one in which the Lombard League, under the command of Alberto da Giussano, defeated Frederick I of Swabia, Barbarossa. Following the defeat, the emperor, who came to Italy to assert his authority, was forced to renounce his claims to supremacy; he therefore came to terms with the Lombard cities, with whom he stipulated a 6-year truce, which was followed in 1183 by the Peace of Constance in which he had to recognize the city autonomies. Every man by Ferruccio He has the core, he has the hand Reference is made to the heroic defense of the Republic of Florence which between 12 October 1529 and 12 August 1530 was besieged by the imperial army of Charles V of Habsburg. During the siege, Captain Francesco Ferrucci was mortally wounded, and finished off by Fabrizio Maramaldo, a mercenary captain in the pay of the imperial army, whose name has become synonymous with "cowardly" and to whom Ferrucci addressed the words " You kill a dead man." On 12 August the Florentines signed the surrender which once again subjected them to the Medici. The children of Italy They are called Balilla The reminder to all the people of Italy is the value and courage of the legendary Balilla, the symbol of the popular revolt of Genoa against the Austro-Piedmontese coalition: this is the nickname of the boy, perhaps a certain Giambattista Perasso, who on 5 December 1746 he threw a stone at an officer, starting the revolt that led to the liberation of the city.
The sound of every ring Vespers rang. Let's gather together at court We are ready for death Italy called. “The sound of every bell” means “the sound of every bell”. The event Mameli refers to is that of the "Sicilian Vespers": name given to the movement by which Sicily rose up after 16 years of Angevin (French) domination and gave itself over to the Aragonese (Spanish). At the time of vespers on Easter Monday 31 March 1282 all the bells began to ring to urge the people of Palermo to insurrection against the French. They are rushes that bend Swords sold: Already the Austrian Eagle He lost his pens. The blood of Italy, Polish blood, He drank, with the Cossack, But her heart burned. Let's gather together as a cohort We are ready to die Italy called. Habsburg Austria (of which the double-headed eagle was the imperial symbol) was in decline (the swords sold are the mercenary troops that filled the ranks of the imperial army) and Mameli called the people together one last time Italians to give the final blow to Austrian domination with a parallel with Poland. Between 1772 and 1795, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, together with Russia (the "Cossack") had invaded Poland. But the blood of the two oppressed peoples, the Italian and the Polish, can turn into poison through the uprising against the foreign oppressor. the song is inspired by various historical events that occurred in Italy over 2500 years and invites the Italian people to reunite under one flag, in this way we will be so strong that no one will ever dare to invade us again. I hope I've been helpful, unfortunately, many of the things I speak don't exist in English, so I had to improvise.
And what do you say about those who are not Italians but claim that Italy has a superior culture? In my opinion Italy is one of the most loved countries on Earth, probably USA surpasses Italy, but that is because of propaganda and movies. Italy managed to do this only by being Italy. I always see people on the streets with a tshirt or something that has "Italia" on it.
USA is the most hated country on earth, closely followed by UK, France, Israel and Russia. Simply speaking all the imperialists. If Italy is loved, one reason is it doesn't have an imperialist past, or a short and failed one. Similarly, Japan and Germany are generally also loved (except places like China and Korea that suffered direct Japanese impact), simply because on a global scale they aren't associated with imperialism either.
I love Italy! I want to live there when I grow up! Italy is one of the prettiest nation with so much architecture and history. I am glad to be Italian!

Captain Goffredo Mameli was a patriot and fought for the unification of Italy, he died in battle while defending the Republic of Rome. he was only 21 years old. he never saw a united Italy, but he dreamed of it, imagined it, researched it and wrote it in his songs, long before all this happened. there is no song more appropriate to be our national anthem. in fact it is a symbol of struggle, brotherhood and unity. the song metaphorically refers to various Italian historical events.
first verse: Brothers of Italy
Italy has awakened,
Of Scipio's helmet
She put her head around it.
Give her your hair,
What a slave of Rome
God created her.
Let's gather together as a cohort
We are ready to die
Italy called.
The cohort was a combat unit of the Roman army, made up of 600 men: it was the tenth part of a legion. “Let us band together” is therefore intended to be an exhortation to present ourselves to arms without delay, to remain united and compact, willing to die, for liberation from the foreign oppressor.
We have been for centuries
Trampled upon, mocked,
Because we are not people,
Because we are divided.
Collect us one
Flag, a hope:
To merge together
The hour has already struck.
Let's gather together as a cohort
We are ready to die
Italy called.
Let's unite, let's love each other,
the Union, and love
They reveal to the People
The ways of the Lord;
We swear to set free
Native soil:
United for God
Who can win?
Let's gather together as a cohort
We are ready to die
Italy called.
From the Alps to Sicily
Everywhere is Legnano
The battle of Legnano, in 1176, is the one in which the Lombard League, under the command of Alberto da Giussano, defeated Frederick I of Swabia, Barbarossa.
Every man by Ferruccio
He has the core, he has the hand
Reference is made to the heroic defense of the Republic of Florence which between 12 October 1529 and 12 August 1530 was besieged by the imperial army of Charles V of Habsburg.
The children of Italy
They are called Balilla
The reminder to all the people of Italy is the value and courage of the legendary Balilla, the symbol of the popular revolt of Genoa against the Austro-Piedmontese coalition: this is the nickname of the boy, perhaps a certain Giambattista Perasso, who on 5 December 1746 he threw a stone at an officer, starting the revolt that led to the liberation of the city.
The sound of every ring
Vespers rang.
Let's gather together at court
We are ready for death
Italy called.
They are rushes that bend
Swords sold:
Already the Austrian Eagle
He lost his pens.
The blood of Italy,
Polish blood,
He drank, with the Cossack,
But her heart burned.
Let's gather together as a cohort
We are ready to die
Italy called.

Similarly, Japan and Germany are generally also loved (except places like China and Korea that suffered direct Japanese impact), simply because on a global scale they aren't associated with imperialism either.
piango ogni volta che sento questa versione, l'innocenza della voce della bambina è qualcosa di unico
Vero😭😭
