My dad bought a white 5.9 almost brand new. We towed our four wheelers and went on many trips. That think was an absolute joy to floor from a dead stop, getting up to speed entering a highway, or when trying to get out in front of some traffic! 😁 I remember getting a super cars book in school and seeing our jeep being in it and thinking that was so cool!
The 12 miles to the gallon gas mileage was horrendous though, I guess it cost to have fun though. 😎

These jeeps are my favorite. I have a 96 nothing of this caliber. But I enjoy the horsepower and sound, and the beating it takes. I have put a lot of hours into it and not much $$$.

all i know is that i am getting me one of these! straight pipe, cold air intake, lift kit, and some bigger wheels will be my first mods
it is nice when manufacturers dig into their parts bin and put something like this together. i had a 99 dakota rt. not the greatest gearing for red light to red light but mash the skinny pedal on the highway and smile would creep across most peoples face. and no I didnt think it was the best thing ever. it was just a truck.

did you get rid of your worthless dana 44A? I replaced mine with a ford 8.8
+hawkboy1792 That "worthless" 44a is a VERY strong axle. It is basically the same center section and gears used in high horsepower corvettes and vipers. If your goal is a high horsepower ZJ that isn't going offroad, the 44a is a great axle to have.
The only reason to replace it with anything else is if you are taking your ZJ offroad and wish to add a lot of aftermarket parts, for which there is not a lot for the 44a.
By the way, the actual name of the 44a is 44HD. HD as in heavy duty, which it is. The pinion gear is dana 60 sized while the ring gear is thicker than a standard dana 44 ring gear. At the end of the day, for street driving the 44HD(a) is about the same exact overall strength as the Ford 8.8, meaning you pretty much wasted the time and money to do the swap.

I don't understand half the mods on this 5.9.... lift it and then put street tires on it and what's with the 'hood scoop' with the hood louver on top of that... Oh and the huge tach with the 💯 functional tach on the dash....

98 was not the only year with the 5.9. 93-95 had a version of the 5.9 but with obd 1 computer and weaker rear diff and less power
No, they didn't. Where did you ever hear something like that? 93-98 (production run of the ZJ) had the 5.2 Magnum available, but only the 1998 5.9 Limited was equipped with the 5.9. That's why the 5.9's are considered a legend and are very rare. There is no "other version" of the 5.9 (unless you mistakenly categorize the similar displacement Cummins B series as a "version"). Magnums are the evolution of and based on the LA block.

John Slade only thing i really been thinking of changing is the front diff to a high pinion and changing to 4.10 gear sets. But not sure how well she will run with bigger gears since i dont plan on running any tire bigger than 31"
Well, from what I've seen, 4.10's are the gears recommended with 33's, so you'll lose some highway MPG (but to be honest, it's a 5.9, who cares?!), but she'll definitely pick up some acceleration and the butt dyno will notice the difference. Also thinking about 4.10's in the future myself, running 33x10.50 Swampers. Another thing to think about is getting your speedo corrected with a new speedo gear after it's all said and done. I'm sure you won't regret it, just like all things it's a tradeoff but it seems like mostly positives to me
