Groundwater ; Sources and Recharge

- In the context of Indian urban water, more precisely groundwater, Bore-well is a ubiquitous term. Borewell is essentially a deep hole usually of 9-inch diameter going deep into the earth to tap into the water which is present in what is called the ‘confined aquifer’. It is not uncommon to see borewells going as deep as 1800 to 2000 feet in search of water. Confined aquifers are formed over decades or centuries and the recharge areas of these deep aquifers are usually very far from the point of withdrawal.
On the Other hand, another geological formation called ‘unconfined aquifer’ is the water available in the soil pores at a much shallow depth. The Seepage of this water into the unconfined or shallow aquifer is much faster and the recharge of this water happens very locally. Extraction of this water is much cheaper and usually, the water from the shallow aquifers (Unconfined aquifer) will be much better than the deep bore-wells (Confined aquifers).
The dynamics of formation and recharge of these two aquifers are totally different. Hence, it is very much possible that water may not be available at a depth of 1500 feet in the bore-well (Confined aquifer) but water may be available just 10 feet away at a shallow depth of 15 feet in the open well (Unconfined aquifer)
In this Video, an attempt is being made to explain the aquifers in the context of Urban water and rainwater harvesting. Real-world example is taken to show the availability of water from both the aquifers. The water from the open well is tested for drinking water standards (IS 10500).
A detailed video explaining the economics of Open well (Unconfined aquifer) is here: • Groundwater , Groundwa...

I too have connected my rainwater harvesting points one to my 1000 ft borewell and the other to my 10 ft well from past 12 years and i am having water in Bengaluru
Greetings from the LooseNatural farm in Andalusia Spain where we currently live through a drought and we are creating wells.
❤
Great content. My son in Grade 7 also understood the concept very well.
Verse useful and informative video and it provides different and accurate information unlike many other videos, thanks and kudos.
Very Well explained . The Govts. Shld make use of your knowledge and expertise for the good of the society and humanity. God bless you
Excellent content Mr Sunil. Can you please tell,
1. In Urban areas how do we identify that a shallow aquifier is available within our property?
2. If a shallow aquifier is not avaialble, can we create one through recharge? i..e dig a 30 feet wide pit and allow run off into it?
Very great video Sunil Sir. Thanks for the gyaan on shallow wells in urban context.
Very Knowledgeable video yet again!!
This is great content, sir. And me finding this gem of a video perhaps quite late doesnt mean my 👍 is any less of an actual "Like" towards your video. Will subscribe and looking forward to more of your videos . Keep it up 👍👍👍
Please suggest if we drop the drain water harvesting pipe to well directly...well depth 30 ft with 15 ft water ..some body suggest it is not advisable
Sir many people promote the view that the rainwater harvesting with shallow unconfined aquifer, near high buildings (G+ 4 or higher) in urban congested areas, will eventually cause damage to the plinth of the nearby building ( by continuing contact of water with the Concrete underground throughout the year). Many also claim that such a damp environment created underground next to a building in urban congested areas, is a cause for formation and easier infestation by termites later. What is your view on this ?
1. For masonry structure, having wells close to the Foundation is of no problem. The wells go well below the load-bearing/ Bearing capacity of the soil. We have seen hundreds of examples of open wells in courtyards and in the middle of the houses.
2. For framed structures, it is not advisable to make wells very close to the foundation. Since there are point loads, it is recommended that the recharge wells be a little away from the foundations. The rule of thumb is, the wells are to be at least 1.5 (some recommend 1.0) times the depth of foundation away for framed structures. That is; say, the foundation is 6 feet deep, the well must be at least 9 feet away from the center of the footing.
3. Dampness is not an issue since the wells are covered. However, one has to be careful if the wells are sunk in clayey soils. Because the porosity of clay is very very less or almost 0, the water stagnates there and will breed mosquitoes.
@@HinrenEngineering I had the same doubt thank you clearing sir
Nice video. Appreciate your practical approach.
Can we use these techniques for ground water harvesting in open field? Do you offer any consulting services? How much yearly rainfall is needed for these ground water harvesting well to be successful?
Very well explained. Much appreciated
Sir my question is if we recharge that well which is 80 feet deep then is there any possibility that it will recharge the ground water of borewell or not which is 300 feet deep
How to identify where is confine and unconfined water.
Excellent sir.... Thank you.
Would this system work if the recharge well has sand, rock, clay layer on top to filter the run off water before it enters the well?
What happened If drilled rechargeable well 6 meters and u found source of water and after years u want to drill deeper to ten are you going to loose first source
Very well explained, easy to understand😊
How to choose useful water is better
Thank you
Amazing, few q why is there a resistance to wells? Is it cause of contamination fears. Personally we have an open well charges via rainwater from roof, and we never have shortage even when it did not rain well or at all at Bengaluru last year. But got mixed w sewage when a Neighbors sewer broke, but we pumped it out once and it's fine again. Mainly using for flush garden and car wash. But water is excellent quality.
High cost of construction
This was very useful thanks sir
Great video
Thanks
Can you explain, what happens when recharge unit is setup to the existing borewell ( How aquifers recharge / react to recharge unit)
Hi sir, I have an openwell in my house whose water contains calcium carbonate, (salty water), can we change the composition of this water by Rainwater water harvesting ? If so do suggest the method I should follow
Nice one
Hi do you suggest a solution for underground saline water, will the deep borewell into confined aquifer resolve the issue. Kind regards Rashid
What will be the average depth of the confined acquifer below ground lvel?
What is size of the wells and how the water enter the well from the ground water runoff is not clear can u pls show or explain
Recharge well banane ka kharch kitama hota hai banane liye kisaka contake karana ?
I would like to ask you whether using ground water is sustainable or good?
India is a ground water dependent country. Groundwater is sustainable as long as it is recharged. .
Can you please look at the Cuyama ground water basin in California and make a video on how to help it? I Could help
How to know where is the recharge area of the confined aquifer?
@@hcshenoy very difficult to determine analytically . No established science to point out exact locations.
Appreciated ❤
In Which aquifer the cone of depression and its area is more?
Good work
Awesome content😊
where' is your office, I am a coffee grower from coorg, interested in recharging my borewell.
Can a recharge well be converted to an injection well by drilling 30 Mtrs bore with 6' pipe? This way the run off can go depper ?
Technically yes.
However the idea of the recharge well is to saturate the shallow aquifer .
🙏🙏🙏
is this place, coles park.
No , it is in JP Nagar
Close the well properly otherwise kids will fall mistakenly
All are closed with FRP chamber covers . It was opened only for the purpose of video
are bhai hindi ya gujrati me vedio banaye
Bhai Hindi mein video banai hai
