Indiaji was deeply devoted to the cause of India. There has never been such a visionary leader. It is under her leadership India went nuclear , established presence in Antarctica and Rakesh Sharma went to space. It is under her stewardship that India won an emphatic victory in form of Bangladesh liberation despite the looming threat of US's Pacific nuclear armada. Despite her horrendous attack on democracy and her institutionalisation of sycophancy Indiraji will remain most beloved PM of India. Even her detractors admire her and that great patriot she was.

We are yet to unpack how much misogyny, resentment and jealousy Mrs Gandhi faced from lesser men. Men were used to being in authority at home with women deferring to them.. it could not have sat well with them to have to defer to a woman in authority. I feel Mrs Gandhi is a very misunderstood and misrepresented leader. Her introversion may have been mistaken for arrogance but she NEVER treated the poor masses with contempt like the current incumbent but rather all her policies were made with their well being in mind. She was a highly empathetic person who had to maintain a stern presence in a misogynystic work environment. She was a very busy and hardworking person, I think she’d rather spend time with her family when free than file her nails. Was it vanity or necessity? Men are lucky they don’t need to do the ten thousand things women are expected to do to be acceptable in society. How does filing nails interfere with a meeting anyway? Her mind was sharp & present.

I want to share a memory. At a banquet at Rashtrpati.Bhawan, once, icecream was served, made out of scalded milk, so had a burnt smell. The P.M Indira Gandhi was quite severe about it with the official in charge but kept her voice muted. Till he made the mistake of saying, no madam that was the flavour of caramel. Then she really blew her top off. All of us guests could hear her shout, remember I am a woman. Not a stupid man like you, who does not know what caramel smells like and how it is made.
I feel it was common womanly grace which made her pay minute attention to the menus at the dinners she or the
    President gave.

Indira was many things and had quite a few faults - she could be imperious, vainglorious, oversensitive, and didn't forget slights - but her intelligence, steadfastness, competence, resoluteness, strength and commitment to secularism could never be doubted. One does not remember her making speeches mocking certain communities, and her disinclination to discriminate against Sikhs despite the Golden Temple incident actually cost her life. Despite her mistakes and the Emergency, she was still more humane and democratic than the present incumbent. In a pre-social/electronic media age, Indira had a remarkable natural charisma that entranced Indians of all shapes and sizes at a scale that Modi with his battery of IT trolls and compliant media will still never achieve. Indira took on Pakistan in Bangladesh without succumbing to American pressure, while Modi is mute despite China's transgressions and does not even dare to utter the "China" word! For what it's worth, the present BJPee government too treats many ambassadors with contempt and is prone to shrilly lecturing their countries, and there have been several attempts by the BJPee's minions and cronies to nominate Modi for a Nobel. Modi too loves foreign attention - he loves to hug foreign leaders but we've never seen him hug any Indian person. And while Indira may have filed her nails, Modi probably gazes at his own reflection.

He was instrumental in helping her change her views on the market and this had profound changes which her confidant LK Jha (ICS) ushered in subsequently, in later years when he became Rajiv Gandhi’s confidant .

We need to remember that during the era of Mrs Indira Gandhi it was difficult to have an open economy because the Western powers with capital would've been back as colonialists through the economic backdoor. We had to bide our time until the world was ready to play ball with the "third world". So it's not proper to say Mrs Gandhi was a statist. It's what was required at the time.

However she needed convincing and that came from LK Jha no less, who first proposed the dismantling of the post of Controller of Capital Issues ( a post he held a good 30 years earlier) . The point is that though she was a statist, it was because of the economic situation obtaining then and she was quite mentally flexible enough in accepting that the winds of change in the early 80’s coincided with the time Thatcher and Reagan were defining the economic agendas of their respective countries influenced in part by ideas from the Chicago school and also from Hayek.

Land reforms is one such policy, the rich were supposed to give up their land to the poor. Next she discontinued purse for Kings & queens, which angered influential rich. RSS & opposition was fomenting trouble in India by US support/funds.
Emergency didn't affect poor or common man but only rich, influential & anti-nationals.

I can’t quite decide whether Mr Garekhan is just indiscreet or charming or twinkly. However he does draw an extraordinary portrait, in a manner, of Indira Gandhi.

The claim that V.V. Giri insisted on attending Prince Charles's wedding and denied Indira Gandhi the chance to attend is inaccurate. V.V. Giri served as the President of India from 1969 to 1974, concluding his term long before Prince Charles's wedding to Diana in 1981. Therefore, there is no basis to suggest that Giri insisted on attending that particular event and prevented Indira Gandhi from attending.
In 1981, N. Sanjiva Reddy held the position of President of India. However, there is no historical evidence or documentation to indicate that President Reddy attended Prince Charles's wedding, thus denying Indira Gandhi the opportunity to attend. It is worth noting that Indira Gandhi might have desired to attend Princess Anne's wedding in 1973, but her plans were likely disrupted due to President Giri's insistence on attending.

Mr. Thapar: You must read Flying Troika. It is the diary of KPS Menon, Nehru's ambassador to Stalin's USSR. Excellent prose! And you may like to read "Roses in December" by MC Chagla. Parts of the book deal with his terms as envoy to Britain and US and our occasional representative to the United Nations. Very good prose! You will also learn a lot about Jinnah, his mentor, whom he almost never liked.

Mr Gharekhan was a colleague of my father, and a friend of my parents. But I think both he and Karan Thapar are perhaps confusing personalities when talking about which President went to Prince (now King) Charles's wedding. It must have been N Sanjeeva Reddy, not VV Giri.

What the heck are you taking Thapar? religiosity is one thing but superstitions another? religiosity is just one step further from superstition, all you consider superstition now once were religiosity.
The concept of god itself is superstition once you realized that it's just a concept human made to understand their inability to understand the nature.
