Everything Sunil says is true. He may or may not know the root cause and the history, but he is seeing the present as it is and criticizing it with pinpoint accuracy.
@@himanjukularatne4363 I've known for good 2+ decades that Sunil has been politically active in the sense of being a critic, openly, without holding back too much of his true opinion. Most of the time things he said made sense. I don't think Sunil has given long and hard thoughts into the historical root causes of current backward going corrupt political culture in Sri Lanka, which goes back to exploitation by colonials and the schism the colonials cleverly created among Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim people (or even further one thousand years into the history where Sinhala culture started losing it's essence due to a few short-sighted and self serving monarchs or rulers, coupled with socio-political-economic changes in South Asia in last thousand years that would've affected the island. Sunil is not blaming the history probably because he hasn't done his homework into the history. But, the truth remains that historical factors become irrelevant when it comes to the immediate problem of these massive number of down to the core corrupt politicians and politics in the country. 12 years after the war, the country should've made a considerable progress in terms of the quality of life of poorer people, both Tamil and Sinhala. However, that has not been the case. 70+ years after the independence should've been enough time for the island politicians the crack the code of how to make the country self sufficient without having to rely on billions of foreign aids each year for the people to be able to eat. The failure of Mahinda Rajapakse's government to cash on post war boom to improve the quality of life of everyday poor people is a massive failure in his part. I can understand Rajapakse's scavenging and stealing some resources for their own personal gain, but the massive scale stealing that has been continuing by his government's key players, which include his family is not a good thing. There is no need to continue the corrupt political culture of stealing public resources into twelve years by both major ruling parties unless they plan to turn the island into degenerate state of thieves and warlords. Gotabhaya came around and immediately amended the constitution to allow dual citizens to contest as parliamentarians. It is apparent that he's done that to serve his brother Basil and immediate allies to stay in the parliament without losing their massive wealth stored in countries like US with their foreign citizenship. This is a serious trend that can flush the future of a country down the toilet. These constitutional amendments are unlikely to benefit the majority of the people but a handful of parliamentarians and well to do people. You can never develop a country with such stupid acts of political changes.
@@ddandrews6472 I agree with everything even when the kingdom of kandy fell only a brother in law of Sri Vira parakrama narendra Sinha was in rule an these were the weakness that the British exploited to gain power even today the history is repeating itself with the Chinese and Indian government gaining footholds in our country due to inner problems , but like you said these historical facts become irrelevant, what everyone thinks is that a one single ruler can remove corruption ,in politics world over has corruption written into in it like in America is lobbying the senate to pass bills favouring major businesses. also now in Srilanka corruption is soo deep I feel the only way is that people like sunil Perera talk about politics is the only way to change the mindset of the people because that's where it starts. even being born in 94 I remember horrors of war clearly and we were so hopeful that our country will develop now that 30 years of civil wars has ended but alas no the politicians just like those before seems to be making a another racial war so they can stay in power. so in the end I feel like it's the people's fault they stay silent when seeing another taking a bribe and if someone is getting wronged everyone around them stay silent in fear of being shunned by those in power... so out of all those who stay silent I respect Sunil Perera though may not done is homework on history But he spoke openly of what he thought even though he knew he will be shunned by the politicians so I respect that a lot.
@@himanjukularatne4363 Absolutely! This is why the sudden an untimely demise of people like Sunil is a massive loss. Folks like Sunil keep many of the corrupt politicians and officials anxious about their behavior to think twice before stealing and engaging in corrupt activities. Somebody like Basil Rakapakse got super rich through many underhand financial activities by exploiting their place of power. Same goes for Mahinda. The reality is that these people who enjoy being powerful do need some money to stay powerful. Particularly if they are doing the right thing, then they do need some monetary resources as well as people around them to protect what they do for the good of everybody. However, when the greed creep into the politician's psyche, their main objective becomes the gathering of power and wealth, instead of being a visionary leader of positive changes for the collective. Ultimately, a visionary leader is a somebody that is born, not somebody that can be artificially created. Hopefully the socio-economic-political injustices and instability in Sri Lanka will eventually give birth to a tough, determined and dedicated leader. The way Mahinda went at ending the war(even though with it's cruelty to the defeated ones was absolutely wrong) was necessary. He could've given into the international pressure and pull back and give the LTTE a breathing time to gather and reorganize themselves to continue as usual, but he kept with his objective of the military defeat of LTTE even though it came at massive price for some Tamil civilians as well as LTTE cadres(the killing of LTTE leaders young son for example was a truly moronic thing to do, even though it was done by the same soldiers who gambled their lives to win the war). Somebody like Sunil says even the brave soldiers need to be punished if they have done the wrong and cruel thing in the middle of the war or after the war ended. To keep the 'civil' part of the society going without warlords & thieves running it, people like Sunil are needed. And Sri Lanka does not have many such people. Sunil can speak out because he has done well financially by being a clever entertainer and a businessman. Most other entertainers or artists cannot do that as they are short of resources, even though many do have courage to speak out. Mahinda Rakapakse is a massive disappointment when we consider the way he turned out post war. Now people boo at him in International summits, and they are not leftover branches of LTTE. Now, Sri Lanka can only hope the accidental arrival of a brave leader to take on the next phase of becoming truly independent of IMF, China or India. A tough and dedicated leader who cares little about personal wealth and resources is necessary. Somebody with a ruthless determination like Prabhakran, though not to kill, but to develop the country to the point of self sufficiency.
@@ddandrews6472 wow !, that actually sparked some hope for me just like mahinda was made to continue his fight despite the international pressures because He and others around him knew there was no other way after seeing all the destruction for so long . perhaps the socio-economical-political injustice may give rise someone who has no choice but to go against it .i don't it will be accidental arrival it will be someone who was crushed for many years and saw what happened .just like mahinda seeing the way of the LTTE. My greatest fear now is actually of the creation of a dictator. Gotabaya and mahinda they are all demagogue these are leader who use the fear of people to gain popularity .Hitler and all dictator's used this method to gain power and keep power .unless we lose the ethnicity rifts which was actually made my the colonialist to control us we will keep getting demagogue rulers and rajapaksas just like Idi Amins family are every where
