For what it's worth, it doesn't really matter if he's in California at all. The general definition for criminal battery pretty much anywhere in the US is (1) intentionally (2) making harmful or offensive contact with another person (3) without that person's consent. That's why something like spitting on someone would open you up to charges, it's unlikely that you would hurt them but the ordinary person would consider that offensive.

There’s people with actual serious heart conditions and this stupid “prank” could literally kill someone (not his because it was lighter but I’m talking about jumpscaring strangers in general), I think it was Silvio Santos (Brazilian famous show host) that had some hardcore ones in which he stopped elevators, blacked everything out, sent an actress dressed like a horror movie thing to appear and stuff like that, imagine if someone has a condition that puts them in danger, they’re STRANGERS, you don’t know anything about them, you can’t know they won’t have a heart attack because of a stupid prank.
