The Beginning Of An Adventure - Ep. 1 RAN Sailing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- 12 January 2016 is the date for the beginning of our sailing adventure. We leave from Dockan Marina in Malmö in the middle of the winter and so far we have planned to sail to the Canary Islands and after that we'll see where we go next. We have made a lot of preparations on the boat, we install new LED-lights, a new bed system (Froli), serve the engine and the winches.
We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved aboard our sailboat RAN, a custom built Beason 40 in aluminium, untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter, January 2016, and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds take us.

Welcome and thanks a lot Peter! :)
I found you two by looking for Water Makers videos and You seem to both be very likable people. I'm going to enjoy your series.
I’ve been watching you all for the past year and a half or so. This is August 3, 2023 and I’ve just now gone back to see this first one. Looking forward to seeing what the new boat will look like after you finish building it.
Now following you, thanks to the Old Seadog. Looking forward to watching all your adventures
That's what brought me here too!
Me too - binged alll of sea dog - he recommended your channel so here goes from the start
You guys make excellent videos, they're well edited and filled with good content and interesting dialog. You also have a very beautiful boat. I hope your channel is very successful, and I wish you safe and happy sailing.
Which of you are the quad copter pilot, Great views from above.
Decided to look back after following you for a year. Great Start!
Excellent 1st video of your channel, or at least the oldest one I found. Looking forward to watching the. All to the most recent. Thanks for sharing.
Barry brought me here , can't wait to watch all your videos
What does the name RAN stand for? It looks like you two have a nice boat, just needs some love. You will get it as you want it I am sure.
+Ronald Johnson We are very happy with her :) RAN is the name of the deep sea goddess, Ràn, in the Nordic mythology. She was the wife of Aegir and she captured drowning sea men with her big net and kept them in rooms on the bottom of the ocean. We liked the short name and the meaning of it :)
mlne was named Pan . Greek Mythology. Was ve
ry single at the time. thank you for the information.
Found you through adventures of an old sea dog. The adventure begins today. I’ve got a lot of catching up to do!
Amazing production value right from the start. I look forward to enjoying your sailing adventures!
I can only guess that you picked up a bunch of tips on video equipment before you got started. Like a nice arial drone, maybe a phantom 4?
Hey!!!! It’s Jessica from West Marine, I knew I recognized you guys! HA! Hey, that Rocna is 15% off this week, so make sure when you pick it up that you get the sale price!!! XO
January 2020. Been following you two since this episode so many years ago. I watched your latest video published this morning, 17/1/2020, and decided to go back and view your very first video, glad I did. Your first video shows the same technical and sweet emotional quality as your video of this morning, except that there has been a real advance in video recording and editing techniques (great job Malin). Yohan retains his wry sense of humor and drive to keep every detail of the boat under control, love it. It will be so interesting to watch as little Vera becomes a toddler, and beyond.
I have decided to become a Patreon, the content you bring to YT is well worth it. Thank you for being you. ;)
Watching these from the beginning after watching a few from 'the future' !
Same here!
@@mattthewanderer5029 AND SAME HERE!!
And here!
Ok I too don't know how I missed your vlog..... but now I've found you I've subscribed and will get through each video...
I'm an Englishman living in your country so its cool to follow this vlog.. Tack för det..!!

Kul att du hittade oss! And thanks for watching! :)
for some weird reason, I too just found those guys and subscribed and going through them :) execpt I am French living in Hong Kong. cool Vids :) thanks for sharing guys.
We are an Asian couple living and working in southern california. We live in and around the marina so boats are a natural thing to me/us. We are not quite as young as you are but we share the same dream (ours still a dream, yours already a reality).soon enough, we will embark on a similar journey. Stumbled upon your channel and your vids are exactly what we are looking for to learn and see what awaits out there... now you have a new subscriber... thanks for the very informative videos... keep them coming 😊
February 23, 2017 11:00 PM/ I have completed all the episodes and now I start the journey again with Ep.1 :-)
thought i'd revisit your first posting just to see how far you've come guys - it's been a complete joy to follow you all this time
Still the best sailing channel out there, funny no nonsense and know how to sail a boat ;-)
Thank you! 😀
Hello, from your neighbour Norway! Looking forward to following your adventure. Fair winds and safe travel!
Like many others, I’ve seen a couple of episodes and now want to see everything from the very beginning.
Fair winds
Nice work, guys. I just love you people who do what I don't. I am PK Connor who wrote the Kodiak Cruising Guide and I hope you found it useful. It may not be great but it's certainly the best - since it's the only.If you pass through Wrangell, Alaska as you work your way back Southeast, please look us up if we are in town. We're the big sailboat in Heritage Harbor and would be delighted to see you. We don't do oceans but we certainly know Alaska.
Super cool! We found your channel today and subscribed right away :) Are you still in the Netherlands? We are currently moored south of Rotterdam and are planning to leave for the same route as you two in September!
Thank you guys! We already follow you 😊 We left The Hague yesterday and arrived to Bolougne Sur Mer today. Maybe we meet somewhere. Would be nice!
+RAN Sailing That would be awesome!
I really enjoy watching your videos, 2 very likeable people, along with good footage and nice choices in music. I also follow SV DELOS and LA VAGABONDE and WICKED SALTY. Watching all of you travelling to distant shores has inspired me to buy a sail boat and start off in our local waters of British Columbia . Thanks for that
+botheyesopen1 Great to hear that you find inspiration in us and other sailing channels on youtube! Good luck with the boat and fair winds! Cheers
Hey neighbour... fellow BC resident... I just bought a Boreal 47 and will start in March 2019 out of France!
You might want to check out great circle too....
botheyesopen1
I watch some of those too but another one that I have been watching for quite some time it is this real down-to-earth guy who sails alone... he is from England.. his channel is Adventures of an old Sea Dog .
Very well put together videos! Looking forward to seeing more from you two!
+SV Tipsy Gypsy Thank you so much!
I know this is an old (first!) video in the series... but an excellent video to start with!
I hope the quality of the videos my wife and I produce end up being even half as good!
We'll see you out on the waves.
I watched Sailing Uma and came across your channel. If you're friends with Sailing Uma I have to subscribe with you guys too. And start with Ep. 1.. Hope you guys meet up with Sailing Uma while they're in Europe. I think it'll be an awesome Ep. and Step.....
I've been following a lot of sailing couples here on YT, but only now found your channel. You seem like a really nice couple and your video editing is awesome.
Time to watch the second episode! Have fun :)
Subscribed.
We're glad you found us and that you like the videos! Stay tuned for more :)
Just discovered you as my teens and I begin our own sailing journey!
Life is an adventure and one must take full advantage of it.
I discovered you guys on your pacific crossing to Alaska and haven't looked back. I decided to look back this morning, so I am starting at the beginning.
Started watching your passage to Hawaii, through Alaska, down to Mexico and back to Sweden. I’m starting at the beginning now. Johan has gotten a lot of miles out of those gray pants!
I found your latest video 88 and watched several of them from Columbia to Panama, now I am going to watch from your beginning, love your journey and adventure
Joined you from the beginning after seeing you whilst following Sailing UMA.
hi you 2 great videos..me like .. what kind of alu boat is that .. ? maker?.. and good luck
It looks so cold there! Living in Ran over the winter must be tough! Well i have just become a subscriber and watched the latest 4 episodes, now its time for me to go back to the first one and see how it all began. Im excited to go on this journey with you! Thanks for your time and effort to bring this to us!
I am a bit late to your adventure, Thanks to an Old Sea Dog I have found your channel and am looking forward to more.
Nice videos - just discovered - looking forward to watching!
+Mark Hurley Thanks man!
I remember like it was yesterday. Thanks for taking me along. Keep sailing. Your biggest fan in Texas!
I have complimented Ran before but she really is a thoroughbred..... I like aluminum much more than fiberglass..... and next I would go for steel.... cold molded epoxy and marine ply or strip planking is enormously strong as well but Ran,s construction is still my favorite....
I can show you an aluminum power cat right next to my 45' fiberglass in the yard. It's got a hole through the keel caused by a stainless steel bolt that dropped out of sight into the bilge. The bolt literally burned itself through the hull. Took a few years but it's still a hole that doesn't belong there.
On the other side of the yard is a steel 60' sloop. It's hull is completely pitted. It also has almost 100 small to finger size holes in it due to some one not having grounded the dock power properly. The water was charged and in very short order the hull was ruined.
Solid core pre '80s fiberglass is not going to fail.
Steel and aluminum are not anywhere near maintenance free and if you ever get near dock power that has somehow charged the water you're going to have big surprises.
I've unsubscribed because I'm being absolutely flooded with RAN content. Sorry.
Hittade hit via Scandinavian Mooring efter att ha kollat avsnitt 221 Scandinavian Mooring. Jag gillar genast hur mångsidig er kanal är, både det goda livet i 221 och realiteterna i det första. Hälsningar från Finland!
Who are those two young & innocent looking people on RAN?!? That guy looked especially suspicious....Never trust a man without a goatee... ;)
Started watching a few of your videos when you came to Canada. Now I've Subscribed and am starting from the beginning to experience your adventure from the start.
Well done, much nicer than my videos but I hate editing..
+Sailing with SV Wild Hare Thanks :)
Watched a few episodes last night and I’m hooked! Great job guys!
Thanks a lot! :)
Love the part about the diesel heater and the video of Johan servicing the winch. These are skills I need to learn and I'm sure I will since it's something that needs to happen. I'll be sharing this video and will watch your others with my wife, tomorrow night. We hope to have our own "Episode 1" posted soon enough and with enough luck and hard work, have SV Rad Mode sailing this summer and will hopefully be able to go on a grand sailing adventure like you guys! Fair Winds! -J
+Kristina Probst Thanks a lot! A good thing with long distance sailing is that you constantly need to learn new stuff, because things break down all the time. :-) What are your sailing plans? Looking forward to your video! Johan & Malin
We plan to begin coastal cruising from the San Francisco Bay down to mainland Mexico. From there, we'll probably come back up to the SF Bay for next summer and then who knows? The goal is to gradually increase our sailing experience and knowledge until we think we are ready for circumnavigation. Last night, we watched through Episode 5. Good stuff! You guys are hardcore to be sailing out there in the winter. Also, what cameras are you using? Your videos look great!
+Kristina Probst Sounds like a good plan! It's been quite tough sailing in the winter but we're happy to be on our way and for every passage we get closer to the heat. Thank you! We have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 with a 14-140 mm lens, a GoPro Hero 3+ and a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced drone. Fair winds!
Very nice edit of your video's, especially for sailors like me:) Keep going....
As I've seen "the shadow" on your video's, you're also using a quadcopter. Is it a Phantom 2 or Phantom 3 which you're using?
+TurbaFilm We are using a Phantom 3 Advanced. We're really happy with it! Thanks for watching.
What type of boat is she? I saw 40 ft aluminum hull, but what is the make/model? Great videos, I’ve enjoyed them a lot.
Hej, inspirerende og dejlige videos :-) we're following you. We are sailors and have sailed for 4 seasons now. We're thinking about selling out our stuff, sell the house and live on our boat to safe money for a longer trip. That's the reason it is very inspiring seeing your videos😀👌🏼⛵️
+D Nielsen Tack så mycket! :) Sound like a great plan. We say, just do it! :) Good luck and hope to see you out there soon! Fair winds
Hello, I am following you already since many month. The sailing fever has infected me due you. :D May I ask you for information about your bed system? Which did you buy and used in your video? :)
ruhny Thank you so much for following us! The Bed system is called Froli Bed System. Worked great in the cold and humid weather in Sweden. It also adds a lot of comfort in the bed. Have a great day!
Hi guys- great footage! I'm real curious how you acquired such an awesome boat- where did you find her?
Thanks a lot! We found RAN on a Swedish site called Blocket, it's like Craigs list. The guy we bought her from had been living on the boat for 13 years and not sailing a lot. We're the third owner so we're happy :)
+RAN Sailing thank you for the reply. I could definitely see why he lived on her for that long- great layout.
Great videos - saw 1 and 4. Excellent quality. Nice drone shots. Really great work. Looking forward to following along!
+Joe Radman Thank you so much! Great to have you following us!
Greetings from New York state. I just wanted to say that I love you guys and this channel. I found this channel as you were sailing from Hawaii to Alaska and watched all those episodes. Now I have been watching every episode from the beginning. This is my favorite sailing channel. :)
Thank you so much! Glad you found us and congrats on watching all the episodes! 😊
I have now watch all of your videos up to Prince William Sound. I have so much respect for you guys. Thank you for sharing your travels.
im watching all your videos thake care all good for your famelie ;-))
/Johan
Videon ser häftig ut! Snygg båt! Vad är det för någon? Vi ska kolla upp den där kameran. Visst seglar du med Marco Brizzi?
Wow, really nicely done. I like it, and I'm glad I found your channel. What editing software are you using, if you don't mind me asking? Fair Winds. Rob and Maria
+S/V Pau Hana (Sailing Vessel Pau Hana) Thank you guys! Glad that you like our videos. We edit the videos in iMovie on Mac and it works good! Fars wind to you too! Malin & Johan
Thank you for the response.
Excellent videography and editing. Do you have some professional experience?
+lisarob5767 Thank you! We don't have any professional experience and I, Malin, who's doing the editing have just learned by doing and by watching other videos :) Take care!
Your doing it like I’m trying to prepare for so I’m going to subscribe and support you till I’m out there myself Thank you for keeping it real.
beautiful music and great video ! subscribed and will binge watch the rest of episodes tomorrow.
+Adventure Dork Thanks a lot!
Just stumbled across your channel, excellent videos! What sort of boat is it?
+Aidan Hill Thank you! Glad you found us. It's a Beason 40, a Swedish built one-off with aluminium hull.
Very nice vid guys !
Love your videos, thought I better go back to the start. Thank you for sharing your amazing experience, lots of love from New Zealand xx
Hello M & J...!! no words to describe the excellent job you are doing..!! We are located in Canary Island in case you will come in the near future, it will be really pleasant meeting you. Keep on with your adventure..!! you are an inspiration for so many people. Annie and Alfred
Well crafted 1st episode. Great camera work.
Thank you :)
Brilliant opening episode, cannot wait to view the rest
I just saw your videos for the first time, and it looks like this will! he fun to follow. BTW, what type, and size is the boat?
+Comet Jockey Dave Thanks! The boat is a Beason 40, a one-off from the Swedish brand Beason. She is 12,20 m long and 3,55 m wide and is made of aluminium.
+RAN Sailing So you find yourself checking for foreign metal objects in the bilge from time to time, or is that just a concern with steel hulls?
+RAN Sailing So you find yourself checking for foreign metal objects in the bilge from time to time, or is that just a concern with steel hulls?
+Comet Jockey Dave Not really. Of course this could be a potential problem if the area where a more noble metal part is found also is oxygen starved and wet. So from my experience this is something that is a very exaggerated issue with alu hulls. I have found some stainless steel screws and even a copper coin agains the plating in damp areas without any visual damage to the aluminium. Thanks for watching!
not much sailing so far but at least you people are not the kind of just buying instead of repairing
Just went back to the beginning and watched this one. You've come a long way on your vloging skills and gone a long way on your journey too now, remastIng your second RAN. I'll have to watch until you leave Hawaii to fill in.
Parabéns pelos vídeos
'a bit ago I watched a video of your from 7/19 - pretty cool!

Heard some people talk about your channel on some of the other sailing channels I watch. Watched a few of the latest videos which included the birth of Vera and got hooked. You both are an adorable couple and I look forward to watching from the beginning! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Great Vlogs. Keep being amazing!
+MiniRabbitz Thank you so much!
1987 was a good year
Ahh!! Låten som börjar 2:08! Vad heter den? Har hört den asmånga gånger men aldrig hittat den.
watched Episode 1 and you guys got me hooked/subscribed.
Great to hear! :)
Enjoyed the episode. Vera, with your sun glasses, looks like a little movie star. Our prayers are with you .
Starting from the fist episode yeah!
This popped up on my feed. Amazing to see where it all started and where you are today! Fair winds!
Get in touch as you're coming into San Francisco! We'd love to show you around!
My husband and I have a Santa Cruz 53 that we just bought back in May. We are getting her ready for us to start cruising soon. We've been so inspired by you two and all the beautiful places you've been together. We've done a lot of backpacking in Northern California so we love nature too. We'd love to take you for a sail in the Bay as well as show you around SF. I hope you get in touch!
Yeah, cool. I'm gonna keep checking in with you.
Great to have you following us!
What pole did you use to film dolphins underwater whilst moving?
You guys are awesome! I'm watching/subscribed now!
Subcribed!
Great! Welcome :)
I'm in.......love it!
Hi, fantastic viewing. Whats the story behind the name RAN please?
+Jon Knight Thank you! RAN is the name of the deep sea goddess, Ràn, in the Nordic mythology. She was the wife of Aegir and she captured drowning sea men with her big net and kept them in rooms on the bottom of the ocean. We liked the short name and the meaning of it :)
Many thanks. It's always interesting to hear the reasons behind the naming of some boats.
Fair wind and enjoy your travels.
Hi! Really nice video!
Can you tell me the model of boat?
Thanks! It's a Swedish custom built aluminium boat 40 foot. Called Beason 40.
We are fixing up our boat and are wondering what that material is you used to make your mattress?
+Walter Gough The material under the mattresses is a Froli Travel System that elevates the mattress to keep away humidity and it also give a lot of comfort. We are very happy with it!
thank you! Found the site - think I'll try it on my boat. Good luck! Love your videos.
like the look of your boat seams to have more deck space then some others I've seen in that suze
