Just got a 1979 tr7 manual 5 speed . Was told to just take it. Hasn't been started in 4 years. After everything I've done I can't seem to keep the engine running. Turns over, spits and sputters then shuts off again

Hello, and good luck with your TR7. It sounds like a carb issue (dirty float bowls), a fuel supply issue (not getting fuel due to a clog in the inlet valve in the carbs) or bad fuel pump. Take air filters off as they could be clogged too. Verify your battery and ignition system are giving u spark. Timing too. Check the easy and obvious things first before going into the more time consuming ones. If it hadn't been started in years, carbs could be all gummed up and/or have some rust particles in the fuel. The inlet valves could be stuck. Maybe Gumout the carbs too.

@@anthonyhfe6450 Awesome thank you for the suggestions! It seems it will keep running if I hit the carbs with starter fluid, but the moment I stop it shuts off again. I've stripped and cleaned the carbs and made sure there's no clog in my fuel lines anywhere. I think my next step would be to check on the fuel pump itself 🤔

Bypass the mechanical pump with an electrical pump. I’m having the same issue with mine and that seems to be the way to go with it. I’ve read on a lot of forums and I’ll be doing that switch soon.

Not familiar with swapping them out. Is it a difficult process? I think I'm going to have to on a 1979 tr7 I just got

was it the fuel pump at fault

Hello Phil, it turned out to be the automatic choke (F.A.S.D.). It was causing my plugs to foul, due to running rich. Some Gumout fixed my problem. I never changed my fuel pump. Car runs great now. Sometimes my linkage between my two carbs doesn't return all the way to idle position, so sometimes it idles a little high, like 1500 rpm, but that's just the linkage binding sometimes.

Hello, thanks for commenting. As far as the air sound, that's normal, especially with the air filters off. The spark plugs are black, so I think it's running on the rich side. It could be the carbs need to be leaned out a bit, or maybe my F.A.S.D. is throwing in too much fuel. That stands for fully automatic starting device. I'm sure it worked great, before it got old.
