- Karen Praxel is a scuba instructor in Los Angeles, California. She has been diving for many years and loves to teach diving. In this interview, Karen explains the challenges and joys of teaching recreational diving.
Most folks who have been divers believe they can easily just jump into becoming a scuba instructor. Diving and teaching diving are two vastly different pursuits.
You're absolutely right.

Hy I am vicky from India. I am so passionate about swimming. I am good swimming from childhood. There was bug which really bit me while I was swimming. Don't think y is he telling me this, the bug was scuba diving. This made go mad, i seriously thought this is where I wanted to nd explore in to it. Please let me know the best place, where I can professional learn scuba diving. I would love to become an instructor. Thanks a lot. Waiting for ur reply 😊
Hello Vicky. Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I am not familiar with your part of the world at all, but I know there is some scuba instruction in India. Since you have internet access, you need to do some research to find out where there is diving instruction near you. You need to learn to dive first and get diving experience before you can be a good instructor.
MrAquaImage Hi, actually I am looking out to pursue the course in best part of the world with best trainers. There are few institute in bangalore, where they explore us in to scuba diving in swimming pool. I am ready to travel to other country, looking for the best.
Like anything, there is no one best scuba instructor training program. If you have the money to travel, then I would recommend going to Sri Lanka, which is close to you and taking a scuba course and see if you even like scuba diving. If you do, then I would suggest you get as much diving under your belt as possible before you try to become a diving instructor. Most agencies today want a MINIMUM of 100 scuba dives before you apply for an instructor course. There are other certifications you need to earn, like divemaster, before you take the instructor program. You need to dive at night, in currents, on wrecks, deep diving, rescue diving, etc. Watch the video again and listen very carefully to what Karen Praxel says about experience. Amateurs teach amateurs to be amateurs. If you want to be a good scuba instructor you need to be a PROFESSIONAL.
Great , thanks. Underwater pumpkin carving specialism? lol
I am Diving equipment technician working in uae
"Underwater pumpkin carving"? erm... erm... where do i sigh up?
its verry hard to make a living as a dive instructor. i think that is why Karen is also an actrice.
How much salary does the instructor earns?
That's a difficult question to answer. It depends on where you live, how much you teach, how experienced you are, etc. Most scuba instructors in the U.S. do not teach full time. Many teach part time while working another job, or they work in a dive store as a salesman and teaching is part of their job in the store. There are some who charge a lot of money and teach exclusively, but they are the exception rather than the rule.
i wanted to be a scuba diver but i hear the jobs are too high of demand so i decided not to
There are always jobs for talented people who want to work hard and make a career. Most people who work in scuba diving as instructors use the training they get to springboard onto a more profitable career working in the diving industry, whether it's working for a manufacturer or some other aspect of the industry. There is no free lunch in this world.
