Mike, thanks for your honesty, your humility, your sense of humor, and the great entertainment!! My wife wanted to buy me an SRV and I told her no thanks - that's a lot of money to spend on a guitar for a guy that can't play very well LOL. She did buy me a Jimmy Vaughan which sadly I got rid of. Funny, my favorite Stevie Ray song is Little Wing and my favorite Hendrix song is Little Wing
Scuttle Buttin's has to be my favorite SRV song...his riffing in that song is insane and it makes me smile every time I hear it. Also one of the few instances I am aware of that a Strat player uses the middle position
I did play a used one. The tone was killer, but the neck finish was very sticky and thick. My local Guitar Center has a Custom Shop version I may try out. Kudos for tackling some tough tunes from SRV. Lenny and his take on Little Wing are not easy songs. I have my own takes way back in my YT channel lol.
You’re right about those necks. I borrowed my buddy’s (04 I think) for a song at a gig and I’ve got super sweaty hands. I’m glad I didn’t have to play a second song. I’d sand that down if it were mine though.
8:04 just wanted to correct you here, the David Bowie album, “Let’s Dance” featured SRV on lead guitar. Worth checking out! That guitar sounds great and you have excellent tone!
That's right, somehow I always forget that even though his work is so great on that song. Crazy to have two of the most legendary Strat players on that track.
@@samouellette5130 you're right, I was just hearing that solo from the title track in my head. Incredible work by both SRV and Nile throughout that album
i just made a srv-ish partscaster. the body is a starcaster beginner guitar with the 3 color burst, preloaded pickguard with texas specials, fender backplate, warmoth roasted maple neck with rosewood fretboard.
Favorite SRV songs (yes there’s more than one bc you can’t just have one favorite Stevie song) are love struck baby, collins shuffle (Montreux 82’) couldn’t stand the weather, rude mood, scuttle buttin, say what, and finally, all your love I miss lovin (live 80’)
One of the greatest songs he did is “Life by the drop” that is my favorite then it’s Texas Flood but life by the drop brought me to tears it has so much feeling in it just really moved me
I’m getting a Squier Classic Vibe 60s and modding it to make it look like SRV’s First Wife (just without the relicing). So getting gold Fender tuners with pearl buttons, a gold lefty Gotoh vintage style tremolo, gold jack plate/strap buttons/neckplate, black pickguard, and reproduction stickers of the “SRV” and “Custom” stickers. Maybe I’ll update the pickups later on. Scariest part will be drilling to make the lefty tremolo fit. 🫣
Dude! Awesome Guitar! My Fav. Song By SRV is "The Sky Is crying" And i was 19 and in College when i heard About SRV Passing. He is a Great Blues Guitarist!!! RIP Mr SRV.
Full story on the blues jam please… we all been there… the fish out of water feeling when your in a room trying to find the key and can’t find a pocket even if it’s stitched to your pants. Guess what… ya love to fight another day. You get better that way!
Hi Mike, I love your videos, guitar playing, passion for guitars and broad in depth knowledge. What's your blues jam story? I ask because I'm wrestling with the idea of getting up there too. I'm 75 so I'd better do it soon or just forget it. I even just bought a Squier 40th Anniversary Strat to use to avoid banging up my Eric Johnson.
That SRV signature seems fantastic, haven't had a chance to put my hands on one yet. (You handled those riffs of his well!) But I just got an Ultra Strat, burst, with a rosewood fretboard, and I am completely enchanted with it. (Usually practice acoustic every other day, but my acoustic hasn't been out of its case since I got my Ultra Strat. 😂) Side note: Anyone who can actually choose a "favorite" SRV song has probably not listened to his full catalog yet. Far too many fantastic songs to pick just one as a fav! )
I remember dreaming of having the SRV guitar back around 2000 when I was in college, I ended up with an MIM Standard Fender Stratocaster in sunburst with a Rosewood board, which was a special order from my shop (the owner only liked maple fingerboards on sunburst and I payed the extra $36 for the veneer), it was my first electric guitar. I have added a black pick guard and interestingly enough a set of the CLF-100 vintage G&L pickups. I play it with 11s and tune it down to E flat. I played the sh#t out of that guitar and even used it for Weezer songs (Rivers also tuned to e flat on Say it Ain't So). It was my number one (no pun intended) for over ten years. You mentioned G&L, around that same time I discovered them too, but have built up a collection in the mean time with a real stable vintage pieces. F-100, SC-1 (2), SC-2 (2), SC-3, ASATs (2), and an interesting Comanche VI. They all play great and I'll pick a few of them as my go too's. Love your channel, and appreciate the honest feedback. If you really like G&L, check out the old stuff, there is a lot there and it is still relatively inexpensive.
Yes, I'm an SRV fan. Favorite song is Life by the Drop. Yes, I've played the SRV signature...but it didn't really do anything for me. At least, not compared to basically any other strat. Yes, we'd love to hear the blues jam story.
Aw! I wanted to also hear the G&L HSS. Tim Pierce, great and famous studio guitarist, seems to use a HSS when he needs the ability to play EVERY genre. Love you VIDs
2:01 Gosh, I remember playing along with "My Sweet Lord" when it was on Top 40 radio. Couldn't figure out that one funny chord at the time, but I eventually did, and it was still before this MIke guy was born. It doesn't squick me so much that this guy's better than me (and he's quite improved since those 30-second joke videos), but he HAS MOAR GUITARS THAN ME!
I litterly died soon I figured out this video was about the SRV strat.. I have wanted on for over 20 years I almost had one last year but the deal fell through… I have Texas specials in my own strat and absolutely love them.. I can’t believe you got to play one… amazing… plus my Fav song is look at little sister by SRV and like pretty well ever other song hahaha
I own this guitar. My only genuine Fender. Love it for the thick neck. Had to change the pickguard since I'm not SRV but it's still my #1. Wish the hardware was nickel or chrome instead of gold but oh well
0.13s, eh? Stevie felt that Hendrix was on to something with the reversed Trem. He was a big fan. Yeah, a Strat's a One-Trick-Pony, but nothing else sounds like it. Fave? 'Riviera Paradise'.
SRV is one of the all time greatest. Just caught Jimmie Vaughan a couple weeks ago open for Clapton! FYI Stevie never had the backplate on his guitars, actually. Also, the upside down trem was a tribute to Jimi Hendrix
I have played the ORIGINAL prototype Stevie played on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Larry Brooke's built it and let me play it. It sits in his closet. Same strings Stevie played.
I should explain that Larry Brookes worked for the Fender custom shop and built the original prototype. When Stevie passed away, that guitar was returned to Larry. I was teaching Larry CAD-CAM....and that's how I ended up playing the prototype.
I tried one years ago when they first were a thing. It was just as hard to play then, high action thick strings, as now. The low E had that thunk though.
Did this come from sweet water tune in Eb? Also, what gauge strings did you use for this video? did it come from sweet water as well with that set up? Thanks.
its for people with very large hands lol. I never actually grabbed one, but I would be interested in knowing if the neck curve is as big as the newer revised Rosewood Silver sky's.
Never played it, never wanted too, probably never will. The idea of signature guitars have been around all of my 42 years of playing but has never appealed to me much. This one in particular was for a guy who went out of his way to make playing a Strat, already a tempermental animal on its best day, like going to war with it. Ass-backwards trems and strings guaranteed to leave you with a case of tendonitis not my idea of practical or even enjoyable. As much as I love vintage Fenders, they were a first stab at something that has continued to evolve and the older you get, trust me you don't want to be fighting with your instrument. Hero worship is a natural part of growing up but at some point you have to be yourself. That's why I have largely left big-brand guitars behind because at the end of the day they are only about the Benjamins. My 2 main guitars nowadays are ones of my own specs and my own making courtesy of Warmoth parts and select pickup winders. It's the only way to get a guitar that is truly "yours".
I got my Strat and I'm good with that. As far as the greatest Stevie, it's gotta be Little Wing or Riviera Paradise. Lenny is great but SRV perfected that performance with Little Wing. There's something about the latter song that's just magical, on an album that might be Stevie's greatest? Everything on In Step is a banger; he was clean by that point and it shows.
I’m having Mandela effect that Fender has had your attention before. It’s cool. It’s your multiverse. No shame going parallel. Being re surprised you love fender in this universe make sense you’d start by mentioning g&l. Lol
That is one of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen. I'm actually looking to get my first signature guitar, but I'm looking at the Nancy Wilson signature Epiphone Nighthawk. It's just like the guitar she played on Barracuda and so many of Heart's early hits. And plus there aren't a lot of women with signature models, so there's something of a historic side to it.
