Wow I'm seriously mind-blown by how good this video is. This world needs 2 kinds of people: the writers like Fujimoto sensei who write beautiful stories, and the analysts like Morj who break it down for us and allow us to appreciate it in all its details. Excellent stuff, wish I could like this video much more than just once.

I think it's also worth noting the person to bring Denji to his epiphany about the dangers/futility of fantasies, the messy realities of life, and the lasting value of sincere relationships is Kobeni. Not someone with a grandiose dream, but just a person trying to earn money to support her family.

Ironically, I think this is the ideal version of the Morj Chainsaw Man video in my head, that plays to your strengths perfectly, and captures why I still like CSM so much despite all its annoying issues. You laid out the story of Part 1 really well, and some of the observations were stuff I hadn't noticed - how Denji's escalating desires are built into the early arcs, and the use of doors in hell (can't believe I didn't notice that one). I was a little afraid of how you tackling CSM would turn out, since it's definitely a bit of a double-edged sword for you, but this was an excellent video.
P.S. read Kaguya-sama, would be cool to see a video on that (since it should meet the popularity benchmark too)

Morj you are my favorite Anime/Manga Analysis channel on UA-cam. I love your mature and thoughtful commentary that suits a personality like myself.
I also love that someone notices that Power & Denji’s relationship is more than Platonic but not quite Romantic. Somewhere in between. A lot of people write it off as just “Siblings” when it’s more of if they recognized and accepted their feelings it would have been more.

You know, I've always considered Chainsawman oddly misplaced in Weekly Shonen Jump. It's by all means a seinen manga. Its first chapter was almost comically dark (I read it as it came out and was about to drop it for how hard it tried to sell Denji's misery), and rather than the usual "fuck yeah" kind of hopeful resolution a typical first chapter has by the end, this one felt like Denji's situation had become just barely less painful. And then, rather than going through the usual cycle of powering up and gathering friends, Denji just kept being abused, manipulated, and forced into being a glorified bait for dangerous devils. Definitely not the kind of hopeful try-hard protag the usual WSJ audience comes for. And at the same time, it gradually transformed into something even more weird: a melodrama about this miserable dude and his found family. Both the thematic payload and narrative style were far more subtle and mature than even most of its seinen contemporaries from Young Jump. By chapter 40 I'd become convinced I was reading a masterpiece in the making, and I had _no idea whatsoever_ what the movie date chapter (still one of the three best chapters in the entire manga thus far) was doing in WSJ. This couldn't just be a mistake on the editorial department's part; it had to be a purposeful experiment. I brought this up with some other reviewers, and they agreed CSM would be more accurately characterized as a seinen because it sticks out like a sore thumb no matter how you twist it.
I'm thinking the decision to publish it in WSJ specifically was made to recapture the Attack on Titan audience, which was a big loss for Shueisha as Isayama's first pick for its publication was WSJ (they turned him down at the time because AoT wasn't a "good fit", although when it became a money-printing machine for Kodansha, the content policies for WSJ were very noticeably rethought). Some of the older big series were on their last acts and Demon Slayer and JJK weren't yet the powerhouses they've become since, so something dark and mature was needed to expand the appeal of the magazine. At least that's how it looks like to me. Not sure if it helped long-term as CSM has since moved to Jump Plus where it happily resides next to Monster #8 and Spy x Family, neither of which needed to be published in the regular Jump to go into tens of millions of volume copies sold. I think at this point J+ slowly but clearly becomes the better magazine (in large part thanks to its more flexible publishing schedule allowing authors to pace both themselves and their works more healthily), and when JJK and MHA end, WSJ will once again suffer from the lack of pillar support.
But enough rambling. Thank you for the wonderful thematic analysis, this is probably the best CSM dive I've seen to date. Looking forward to you diving into Kaguya, Goodnight Punpun, Dungeon Meshi, or Medalist! Any of these would be lovely to have, especially Medalist which has quickly become my favorite sports manga of all time and needs a lot more love.

Chainsaw man feels like a mix between seinen and shoujo (due to the amount of emphasis that has on the emotions of the characters, intimacy and the connection between the characters, things that usually aren't given major focus on shonen and seinen)

I think somehow as I was reading Chainsawman, I got stuck in the idea that Ignorance was bliss and wanted to look away from what the series was trying to tell me. I was afraid that looking too deeply into this series would ultimately make it worse in my mind, because no interpretation that I could come up with would compare to that fuzzy feeling of "hee hee Denji wants gurls again." But boy did this video open my mind.
Morj always has a way of analyzing these incredible ideas that I didn't really think much about, such as the hedonistic treadmill. Of course I realized it was happening on a subconscious level, but I never truly gave it any thought and just dismissed it as "That's just life isn't it?" But to have it be actually connected to the answer that Chainsawman wanted to give about happiness was something that just never occurred to me, even though it seems blatantly obvious now.
I really do enjoy your videos, and I look forward to your thoughts on so many more manga in the future. And hopefully one day I'll be able to come to these conclusions myself.

  • @xiuxiu1108

While the philosophy works on a personal level, in that we can never truly appreciate what we have until everything is stripped away and that there is no real happiness/joy without first experiencing tragedy. Isn't it kind of fucked up when the same philosophy is applied on a macro/geopolitical level? "We cannot appreciate peace without first going through war, we cannot be happy in times of plenty without first having experienced famine and pestilence." i.e. a good movie is only life-changing because there are 8 other movies that are meaningless and vapid.
I think that isn't actually the case. Historically, the world as a whole is happier than say in the feudal age where war and famine is commonplace despite a whole generation of adults (at least in the western sphere) not having experienced major conflict or famine on their soil

One thing that I realized is that the first horseman of the apocalypse is (by some Christians) also represented by the antichrist, a false messiah or a deceiver who is overtaken by Satan/lucifer himself. Fujimoto keeps putting Makima in this weird antichrist role by showing the fall of lucifer to be her painting on the wall (and the first thing you see in the opening of the anime) AND that she even has her own version of "fallen angels"
She has the Angel-devil (most obvious), Beam = Cherubim, Power = Powers (a form of angel in the biblical hierarchy), Princi = Principalities, violence = Galgalim = Ophanim (another form of angel) and from chapter 83 you see three more: Seraphim, Virtue and Dominion
These are all types of Angels from the Bible or other Christian sources.

You did well in this video. I’ve been thinking about chainsaw man for a year. Subconsciously it hit me in some untangeable that I couldn’t grasp. I felt that there must be more beneath the surface than just break neck pacing, plot twists, awesome characters and emotional damage. I read this story when I was in a dark place. Depression, loss of purpose and emptiness. Chainsaw man helped me cope with the things I can’t change and taking back control about the things I can change. I was in the same place Denji was in when Power died and he submitted to Makima. I was too not opening the doors with scary reality behind it. The more I worked on myself I understand the metaphors and message until I opened all the doors and realized that I am the same as Denji. My mind broke after my 2 best friends died in short succession. But just like Denji I broke my personal chains from the control devil. Chainsaw man helped me take the power back. This story will forever have a special place in my heart and I am greatful that Fujimoto wrote it. Your video was able to convey the message of this story and I hope many people will see it, so they can appreciate chainsaw man to its fullest potential. Vrooom vrooom

Funny how stories can affect us. I went through a period of my life where I felt so alone and like nobody really understood me. It was like I couldn't trust anybody to stay and be there for me. It was during that period that I started watching One Piece. The relationships and bonds that the characters had with each other were what I wanted for myself. It's terrifying to open yourself up to relationships, whether they be friendships or romantic in nature, if you have already been burned. The most lasting joys in life come from the bonds and friendships that we form and not from material things. The possibility always exists that we can get burned again. But we learn to appreciate every bond and friendship that we form all the more.

Great video Morj! Clearly the best Chainsaw Man analysis out there for sure. Made me realize some stuff i didn't notice at all on my first read of the manga.
I personally don't understand why this story needs a part 2 other than selling more copies. End of part 1 is one of the best endings for a manga out there for me, but well i hope it does surprise me.

    • @aussieboy4279

I kinda agree with it feeling like it didn’t need a part 2 other than to sell more copies but there’s an argument to be made that there was still plenty of stuff to explore. For instance Denji having to find the Blood Devil and befriend it. I also think that for the series lasting message of how close, loving relationships are the most important thing in life that to end Denji’s journey without getting to see him rebuild those connections with people and truly live a life of happiness would be a shame. Now that he is out of the control of Makima he is on his own on creating relationships and living his life and I like how Part 2 has shown that so far.
There was also a lot of potential in the world that had yet to be explored, such as the primal devils or how different people in different sectors of life live in a world of devils. Part 1 showed us the public safety side of the world and now Part 2 is showing the world through the perspective of school life. So yeah I don’t think part 2 was made JUST to sell more copies but more because there was so much more to be explored.

I would disagree, Fujimoto was given a long break before he started Part 2 meaning he meticulously planned the story.
As far as Part 2 is concerned, the tone has shifted from being hype and chaotic befitting the hedonistic mindset of Denji to a slower, more introspective befitting the new protagonist/major focus "Asa"
The series is currently a slow burn but that's what I'm excited about because dialogues and relationships might become more established and clear as Denji himself is becoming more mature.

Part 1's message wasn't made entirely clear until the very end. Similarly, I don't expect to understand the message of Part 2 until it's actually over. So maybe it will be disappointing, maybe not, but I don't have a way to know yet. I'm just enjoying the ride for now.

The irony of people loving the CSM manga so much that they become enamoured of the dream/idealized version of what the CSM anime should be and inevitably become disappointed of the actual/real CSM anime when it comes out...
their comments and tweets sound almost like Makima in the final showdown "chainsawman doesn't use CGI", "bad VA choices their voice don't sound like that"... etc etc.
To love a story so much you actually miss the point of what the story is trying to tell is just mind-blowing.

The door analogy kind of reminds me of a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche.
"Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed".
Denji actively seeks all forms of pleasure whether the sandwiches or more notably, the girls. He inherently believes that the very idea of possessing such forms of pleasures will make him fulfilled and happy, yet deep inside, he himself knows that the very achievement of obtaining them will not be enough to satisfy him.

  • @bookshelf4187
    @bookshelf4187 Рік тому +5

Great stuff, man! It's hard to look for chainsawman content that isn't too horny or sentimental, so this is a breath of fresh air.
A few additional points about Makima:
    - In the same way that humans specifically long for the exact things that we do not currently have (the grass is always greener on the other side), Makima as the perfect manifestation of order also longs for the one thing she cannot have: Chainsaw Man, whom she views as the perfect manifestation of chaos. She wants to be with the one being that she can never control: chaos itself. That's why she insists all throughout her final battle with Denji that Chainsaw Man doesn't wear clothes, speak, etc. She sees him as a fully chaotic being. But as she discovers, the real chainsawman isn't like that. Instead, the real hero of hell is Pochita, who just wants lots of hugs.
    - My headcanon about Makima's defeat is that Denji didn't break her contract due to attacking her with "love", but rather she allows herself to die. Upon discovering that the "denji" she has been fighting has been the real chainsawman all along, she becomes disillusioned. Suddenly, everything she knew about her beloved hero is called into question. She also probably realized the padadox behind her wanting to be with chainsawman precisely because of how chaotic he is, all the while wanting to control him in order to chain him down to her. Once she exerts control over Pochita, then he is no longer chaotic, thus nullifying everything she worked for. I think this realization caused her to simply accept her fate and allowed herself to be defeated.
    - Most CSM fans believe that Makima's end goal is really to "erase" all bad things with pochita's power, but I think that's just another layer of manipulation. Throughout the story, we see Makima employing different styles of manipulation depending on whay suits her target. She used sexual favors on denji, terror on the yakuza members, the promise of revenge for Aki, etc. I think her altruistic dream world is the manipulation she used for the prime minister. Politicians are susceptible to this more philosophical approach, possibly thinking that the lives of a few Japanese people would be worth it for a world that is free of all suffering. But I really don't think this was Makima's end goal, this is just trappings for her. This is more of a bonus for her rather than a legitimate dream. All she really wants is Chainsawman. That's it. In the same way that Denji doesn't have grand dreams, Makima is also incredibly simple: she just wants genuine connection. This is supported by how when she finally extracts Pochita, she immediately lowers her guard and talks to him about how they would eat together, sleep together, etc, basically live a normal life together. She doesn't mention making thr world a better place. She doesn't mention ending suffering. She instead was focused on just living with Chainsaw. Makima is such a good villain because her manipulation extends out of the page and into the readers. So many misunderstand her.

"But I really don't think this was Makima's end goal"
I think it is one of her end goal, yes. She is an individual, but she is also the Control Devil and this is genuinely the way she wants to bring control to humanity. Sure Pochita is more important to her, that's her "main" goal, but I don't think she lied about her other goal. Hell I don't think she even told the prime minister about Pochita and his power to eat away entire concepts. That's too personal and I don't think she shared that.

Definitely one of my new favorite videos on UA-cam, you've really outdone yourself Morj. Chainsaw Man absolutely blows me away in the density and complexity of its thematic messaging. Fujimoto's writing style is similer to Alfred Hitchcock's films (The Birds), and this is valuable to me, and I must say that your analysis was excellent. I hope you will also check series like Monster and Pun Pun. Great video

Then God said: "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper suitable for him"
OOH I was also wondering...about Pochita...
    SPOILERS:
could he be a representation of a nihilist? I'm just thinking about why the story is called "chainsaw man" and how his ability is to get rid of the existence and concept of things. To make them nil.
Chainsaws invoke images of slasher type horror films and even the manga plays on the seeming mindlessness/pure chaos of the genre. Perhaps his existence is spawned by the fear humans have of pure nihilsm but then him returning to a small dog form indicates how humanity simply ignores such ideas. They still fear it if confronted by it but don't acknowledge it.
I think that fits very well into Morj's interpretation.
