@demisDINOS: Have you watched some of the recent lackluster US National performances? This was not Maria at her best, for sure. Maria changed coaches after 1997, showed amazing improvement and peaked between 98-2000. Remember, in 1999 she was unbeatable and became world champion with a flawless 7-triple free program, and also won the 2000 short program at Worlds with a stunning Scene D'Amour. While not the most consistent skater, when she was on she was breathtaking.
Honey Maria was never "unbeatable". She won Worlds and deserved it but Kwan at her best, or Irina in shape and jumping well like the next few years, both could have possibly still beaten her. 98-2000 she won only bronze at worlds those other 2 years and in 98 barely did that, didnt medal at the Olympics where she lost bronze to a past prime Chen, didnt even win a grand prix final title, didnt win Europeans in 2000, and won only 3 out of like 7 regular grand prix events. Hardly sounds unbeatable.
Очень интересная постановка программы, точно не хуже программы 1992 года Кристи Ямагучи под эту же мелодию. Обе эти программы - одна краше другой, как и обе фигуристки (Кристи и Маша)!!!
Interesting that those marks weren't more competitive with Slutskaya who had a big fall and a second significant mistake. Maria's slip up on the loop wasn't as severe and I thought her overall presentation was more stylish and pleasant.
Irina did have 1 more clean triple, and that is if you even credit Maria for her lutz which was probably two footed. Irina also had more jump combinations and harder spins. I think if Maria landed the last triple loop she would have gotten the bronze but at that point her technical was too inferior.
What is so interesting is how many of the ice skaters make it look as though they are only concentrating on the "moves," but not enjoying the skating itself. I can't imagine how un-fun that must be. Butyrskaya seems to just be lining up her next jump or movement. Maybe it was just this performance, but the lack of enjoyment is clear.
it was meant to be a triple triple. also in terms of presentation she stepped right out of her character as Salome after she missed the combination and it was obvious. One of the reasons I would have given the gold to Chen.
Irina did not have a 2nd mistake. The key is Irina did 6 clean triples including 3 triple-double combinations. Maria had at most 5 clean triples including only 1 triple-double combination. However Maria`s triple lutz might have been two footed also. Had Maria done the last triple loop double toe combination she would have gotten the bronze I think, but once she missed it her technical content was too poor compared to Kwan, Chen, and Slutskaya.
@intldawn Her triple lutz was two footed I think. And even if it wasnt she had 5 triples to 6 for Irina, 1 jump combination to 3 for Maria. She couldnt make a mistake sinc she had less content than Irina to start with. Her presentation was more mature but boring and just as lacking in any elegance or fluidity. She was a real jerky skater at this point.
great presence and artistry. but if she were skating under the COP she would have negative GOEs on almost all her jumps with the exception of the triple loop. Also her edges are not that secure as is showcased on her spiral sequence.
really? every jump was gorgeous in the program with the exception of the lutz, which is usually quite strong for her, and the 2nd triple loop... the salchow loop and flip were particularly lovely!

Also, Ilia’s mom beat her in the GPF in 1999…
And let's not forget she won two World bronze medals to go with her World gold.

Wow I didn't know MK's 3T2T combo's landing was that scratchy. 😳

This wouldn't even qualify for US Nationals now. This was very poor and the judges were highly forgiving.
No US female skater would qualify for Russian Nationals nowadays...
