It is so awesome to see this beautiful, magnificent plane land in such a beautiful and demanding environment. This should make all of us feel humble and proud. No need to travel to Mars!
Good video as always, Joe. Nice to see some love for the A340. The later A340-500 and 600 variants used the Rolls-Royce Trent 500 series turbofans which are a huge improvement over the CFM56.
Hi Captain Joe. Did you do some sightseeing in Cape Town? If you haven't, I reccomend visiting the Cape of Good Hope Castle, the Waterfront, and Table Mountain.
great journey. I will do that also. What about the fuel shortage in South Africa ? LH refules their 747s in a 4 hour round trip to a neighbouring country.
Captain joe, can't wait for the next video , so excited , Do they use special Tyers or wheel's ?? To land on ice or snow ?? Love these videos . Love Ur videos .. So informative.
Hi, Captain Joe! Is there a difference between „North“- and „South“- polarized sun glasses? 😉 Thank you very much for your content. It‘s always interesting and unique. 👍 Greetings to all of your followers!
Excellent. Funny how this video drops just now because I'll be flying over Antarctica in another 11 days. Not landing, just 4 hours flying over the ice on a QANTAS Antarctica flight. But watching the runway preparation made me wonder if these scenic flights where scheduled around runway preparation encase an emergency landing is required. It's not something anyone talks about but to think of it as a remote possibility is a little too optimistic for me. Anyway, if I had more time I'd order a pair of those super cool 'Glacier Shades'. But time is tight now...
Hey Joe, I flew the amazing two seats Hawker Hurricane, the only one in the world. Its two-seats configuration makes it quite better than the Spitfire bubble passenger seat in my honest opinion, and you can fly it with Hurricane Heritage, they’re AWESOME
Great video can't wait to see next one , found it amazing that braking performance is normal on ice runway , Antarctica is very dry and cold though "classed as a desert ! "
Not many alternate airports on that route, so if you can't land at Wolf's Fang, nearest airport to divert to will be going back to South Africa. And everything at that Antarctic station has to be flown in. There will not be huge fuel depots as at a regular airport. Two good reasons for having the return fuel already with you :)
Captain Joe, I'm still wondering whether the heat of the engines / brakes have any melting effect to the surface of the place where the plane is parked. I'd imagine there must be some light challenges?
I am not sure but as far as physics, air is a bad conductor, so engine and brake heat shouldn't affect that much. However pressure on the surface by the wheels can create issues.
Captain Joe thank you for sharing this experience with us. Also the only plane i know that can land and takeoff from ice is the Lockheed LC-130 i didnt know that tha A340 can do it.
Ice and ice runway are 2 different things. Ice runways (ie blue ice runways) are purpose built runways using ice on which wheeled aircraft can land. The LC130 doesn't need such runway to land though.
So on that date (24/01/24) you were in -10C or below and here in the Cape Peninsula we had 27.2C. Think I preferred the warmer!😄 Interesting your ETD was 04:00Z (06:00B) but I often see that flight go over in the early evening. (9hTQY passing overhead as I type. 21:40B. Flight 3L801.)
Great video Capt Joe, I look forward to the others. These look as interesting as your videos on the German helicopter rescues. How often do these flights occur?
Hey Joe, Susie from vero beach. Did the pilot mean minus 6 to 10 c or or fahrenheit. So how could ice melt at that temp if minus 6 celsius is 21 fahrenheit and ice melts at 32 degrees ferenheit
The -6 temperature is outside air temperature and not the temperature of the ice itself. Something like how we feel hot at 30 degrees C even though our body is at 37 degrees C
@@flywithcaptainjoe my first ride on an A340 was many years ago, but as the passengers boarded, I noticed that there was fog pouring from the above the overhead compartments. I noticed it too on A320s I've flown in. I think it's a cool feature. I've only seen it on Airbus airplanes.
Some videos deserve bigger like buttons. This is one of them. The prices for White Desert are not cheap. A year's salary for some. If I never get to do something like this, please know that I am elated for you, Captain Joe. Thanks for the video. *whispers* didja see Flightradar24 guy when you were down there? =P
Can you explain about navigation technics on such extreme latitude? When you are at a so southern position, directions east and west have no sense, because from south pole you only can go north... meridians become so close that precision in longitude is quite difficult...

100% visual landing in an airliner, with relatively poor visual conditions no less, that takes some skill. It seems like these larger airliners do a lot of the referential work to help pilots make landing in some really bad weather, this is almost like flying before most of the electronic aids. Joe, if you had to chose, 100% visual, or full instrument landing which would you chose?
Awesome!!!👏👏👏Congrats Joe on accomplishing another goal on your life's goal list. You have experienced an experience that very few of us will. Thank you for sharing!
WOWZER
Thanks.
Great share!
A friend of mine spent some time in Antarctica. It's been a dream of mine to get down there as well.

why is this unlisted? good thing i already saved this to my "watch later"
12:51 and the pilot behind the camera is still wearing short sleeves. 😂

Iggy Pop - Passenger ❤

Love Ur videos ..
So informative.
Nope same tires as for a normal landing on tarmac
Ur amazing , ❤ thank you simply the best@@flywithcaptainjoe
That was cool :D I think Buffalo Airways' Mikey had an episode about those DC3s at one point, I think they had a few of them for a while.

Type in "Polarized Sunglasses Captain Joe" in the UA-cam search box, and you'll see an entire video about it ;)
Interesting, i noticed 2 different planes, one was totally white the other which u flew on was blue and white with blue engines.
Amazing Colleague and Person !!! Just a pleasure to fly with !!

He reminds me of Tom Cruise in those sunglasses.
Um 3:32 is actually Union glacier The Final Experiment from 2024-dec-15
I was hoping they offer you a cockpit jumpseat for landing...
Nevertheless, very interesting trip!👍
Watch the 4th video coming in three weeks ;)
Gosh wow!
What an awesome watch!
Great video, thank you!
WoW
I thought this was a slow mo guys video during the landing.
This is so cool!
Wonderful Video

Sadly not for sale online

wonderful ! thanks for the adventure ^_^
This video gave me vibes from Letty in Fast X when she opens up the door and see that she was in prison in the Antarctic
I'm curious, who are usually the passengers of this flight? Thanks in advance.
Capt Joe
Good job
Salam kenal yaa
Tetap semangat
👍🙏
LOL 0:19 Moonraker as in 007 😁
Do they routinely tanker the fuel for the round trip, or is that only an emergency measure?

These flights are once a week during the summer season of Antarctica which is only a few months!

Just amzing!!. Thanks for sharing your emotions.
Thanks for this video!
My pleasure!
more of this please !
Brilliant Joe, what an amazing insight.
I’m guessing only four engined planes are allowed that far south due to ETOPS?
Twin engine aircraft also visit there eg the 757.
For example, one company operates approx. weekly passenger flights to Antarctica from November through January with their Boeing 757 aircraft.
Very cool. l was surprised at the route taken.
Fantastic report and very nice Chanel! Thank you!
This is one of your best videos. Thanks for sharing.
Happy subscriber 😊 !
Thanks Chris! Appreciate your kind words!
Some very familiar sounding background music playing during the approach and landing there. If you watch The Slow Mo Guys you'll know.
The Captain looks like Peter Gabriel
I will let him know ;)
Thank you so much Joe. Love & Support from Bengaluru,India. :)
I guess ETOPS won't work here, as there are no alternate / diversion airports. Probably the reason they fly the 4 engine A340.
The 757 also flies there
Ah, CPT Joe was at my home airport and I missed him!
Hope Cape Town treated you well sir.
Mate I love “Mother City”😉
Lovely video, thanks for showing
Did the captain turn on the Airbus fog machine?
Care to explain?

Hey cap, how many times did you have to correct the plane heading to compensate for the earth curvature?
On every flight
Ghoose bump 🙏🏽❤️
What a great video Captain Joe, or Joey, as DPG Michelle calls you. Very interesting video. I loved it. Thank you very much and have a great day.
My pleasure
did you see any flatearthers while you were up there. that 24h timelaps is from them
No they had a conference in the US at the time I was in Antarctica

Where can you divert to?
Back to Capetown!
If you're going to have a cool call sign like Moonraker then why not pick the numbers 007? 😂
That would have been their cherry on the cake😉
The A340 is pretty much the last plane I'd have expected to be capable of landing on Ice.
This was awesome CaptainJoe! Thank you taking us along!
Captain Joe is terriffic, CHECK! ✔

Hat a great experiment to be a part of Kapitan Joe ! Just wondering, what time zone are you in when in Antarctica ?
Very good question :) We stayed in Capetown Timezone!
Joe, that's a great episode 👏 look forward to the rest of the series
To the poor pilots that lost their life in the states r.i.p. but flying is still the safest transport 🙌
