  • This video covers all the things you need to know to use image blur in wildlife photography. How to use panning to create a sense of speed and movement, what shutter speed to use on a hovering bird to create wing blur and what type of shutter speed needed to freeze the motion of a fast moving bird.

You got a photograph of a Hobby in flight, that's amazing 👍

Good examples of the effects of shutter speed to show movement instead of just freezing the shot. I like the ones with the wing tips slightly blurry and am going to try and get some of those. Thanks!

Hi Juanita, glad you enjoyed it. Yes it's certainly worth trying blurring the wingtips of the bird you're photographing. Good luck with it. All the best, Steve.

Great run through Steve. Nice to try something different with the slow shutter speeds something I rarely do. Cheers Keith

Thanks very much Keith, yeah I don't do it that often. But I think it adds some energy sometimes. Cheers, Steve.

Thanks very much Mark. Yes I don't use slow shutter speeds that often. But I think it makes a nice change occasionally. Thanks for watching mate. Cheers, Steve.

Thanks Steve. It’s nice to try something different. I had a go at slow shutter speed with the Gannets at Bempton back in the summer (my guess is that your’s were from there too - I think I recognise the spot where they come to collect nesting material!). You don’t get many keepers but I like the sense of movement and/or the impressionistic feel if you get it right. If I show them though, I like to include some sharp ones as well just to show that I do know how to take a sharp photo! Not for everyone but I think it’s well worth having a go.

Hi Alan, you're absolutely right it was from Bemptom. What a great location that is. Yes you're right it's not for everyone but I think it's good to try something different. It's a good idea to show some sharp images as well. Thanks for watching and commenting. All the best, Steve.

A good, informative vlog Steve and something to make you think. However, I fully understand the concept of a slower shutter speed but not for wildlife photography, motorsport, yes. If someone showed me a blurred bird in flight shot, I would just bypass it. For me, I want to see the animals eye/head in focus, but you can still have a slow enough shutter speed to blur the background. In my opinion, this makes for a more interesting shot. Keep up the good work mate and stay safe.

Hi Steve, yes it's very much personal choice but I do enjoy using slow shutter speeds sometimes. I think it's good to experiment. It's not for everyone though. Thanks for watching mate, all the best, Steve.

A good video Steve, but I must admit I prefer the photos that you took with the fast shutter speed.

Thanks very much Ursula, yes slow shutter speeds are not everyone's cup of tea but it's fun to experiment sometimes. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.

Prefer all my images to be tack sharp.
Anything blurred gets deleted. This technique is not for me.
    Like the Hobby shot.

Hi Paul, I accept this technique is not for everyone but for me it makes a nice change sometimes. Glad you like the Hobby shot. Thanks for watching, all the best, Steve.
