Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Universal Tool Grinder Shop Stand!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- Adam speed builds a workshop tool stand for his recently acquired Cuttermaster universal tool cutter, grinder, and sharpener--a machine that weighs several hundred pounds! While it's diassembled and being cleaned, Adam needs to build a 30" tall stand out of just two sheets of 3/4" plywood and casters. And in a first for Adam, this is going to be a triangle tool stand!

Thanks for watching!

My dad used to have his 'tool shed' (built by him and grandpa) that was about the size that would fit one adult and one child who could turn around if they shuffled in place. 😆 Dad was often called away to work, but when he was home I loved to explore his workshop with all the glorious worn down and stained wood and bits of metal this and that which I had no idea what they were or were for.
Watching Adam putter around his shop kind of remind me of those few golden years.
You've become a sort o surrogate dad. It's the only explanation as to why I keep tuning in and watching the whole thing.
DANGER !! It looks like when rolling perpendicular to either right angle face of the support box (face moving away from pusher), the casters will orient towards the pusher. This puts the center of gravity very close to the force vector axis of the caster point of contact with the floor. I think that if the casters catch on something it will tip over quite easily. This is particularly acute for the side supporting the motor. The casters need to be moved further outward.
I’m not nocking down his build but I totally agree with what your saying. It’ll only take one thing , tiny stone or steel saving to stop the wheel while pushing and over it goes . Then you have lots of words to say . I do love his one day builds

I love how mechanically you set your hammer stance and perform it the exact same way every time. Reminded me of the Cuckoo Clock figurines that pop out and hammer the bell.
Everything that takes up more floor space means you are one step closer to needing a new shop :-).
Or sell those things that you havent used in 2 years or more
@@smashyrashy thats not how it works 😅
@@seanylewl maybe not to you
@@smashyrashy it was a joke mate, calm down
@Smashy Rashy if you sell it you will need it the next day
Nice buy and build Adam! The frustration of dull tools can not be overstated enough, and the satisfaction of being able to sharpen tools when needed yourself is pure gold!!! Nice one! 😎
Truly Savage with that hammer on that saw table.
Its mind blowing how he has made such a big space into such a cramped small space by filling it with tools machines etc
So it's my lunch break and I've couldn't ask for a better video to watch.
Always amazing to see how your mind works and the thought you put into each build you do.
Note that's the 1st time I've seen or heard of this machine. Would love to know more about it.
My father-in-law owns a tool and die shop. Adam is just getting started with the oddball machines required to run one. One the plus side, my youngest son has made some really cool stuff when he visits over the summer.
Years ago I took a machining class. The classroom had a tool sharpener that looked very much like yours. The instructor was explaining the basics of how the machine worked and what it is capable of doing. He commented that a guy could make a good living with just that one machine as long as they were competent with it.
Rocking the 1970s style funk in video!
I would love to see an aerial view of the entire shop floor as a project like this is being built. To see what it looks like moving from one station to another at each process step. Then back to the shop floor when you are talking to the camera. I know a lot of stuff is hanging from the ceiling, and getting it all in one shot could be difficult, but I still think it would be cool to see.
Looking forward to seeing it used!
Love how Adam chases the cart a bit while attaching the big cylinder. Nevermind that he has locking casters.... 😂 😆
That is something I would totally do.
Let's not pretend like we all haven't done it too. Locking wheels are such a simple invention that makes life a thousand times easier and yet hardly ever gets utilized when it should hahaha
Adam manically racing against the clock is the content i live for!
Perfect camera angle for when Adam questions what time it is and I'm looking at a wall with three clocks on it. I KNOW WHAT TIME IT IS ADAM ASK ME! lol
i find that keeping a flashlight handy in case you lose a small piece on the floor. just shine it horizontally across the floor. a trick my ol man taught me years ago.
Best practice is a series of small tupperware/plastic food containers or specimen trays for holding your small pieces and to keep them segregated based on where they came from. Will significantly reduce the number of lost or misplaced parts when putting stuff back together.
You're giving this man organization tips? First day here?
@@HeyThatWeirdGuy Been around for a while, just don't comment often, usually because Adam gets shit right enough. But when I see someone making a mistake in what others will take as an instructional video, damn right I will give tips. Comments aren't always for the poster, but for other folks reading the comments too.
@@janeladakur5554 well I'll send you an instructional video on sarcasm
You are a delightful person and your videos get me through a challenging workday .
I like that Adam didn’t talk very much in this video. He is only here to build. Not talk.
I have no idea what that tool does, so I'm looking forward to seeing him use it soon!
I can't wait to see it in use. Thanks Adam and Tested team.
Props to the editor for that Shaft guitar after "heavy mother". 👏
That’s our Josh Self!
These are some of my favorite vids, Adam. Thank you!
15:38 Bolt and spacer go AWOL as the power cable gets dragged across the bench.
he he, thats what i saw too
Haste makes waste
The Cuttermaster has been aroubd for a long timeand is a nice unit fot the hobbyist/ maker. I am a journeyman cutter grinder by trade with over 30 years experience. Owned my own cutter grinding service for 22 years. Ounce you master the technique, you will always have sharp cutters in your shop. Very enjoyable work and very rewarding.
"I'm just losing parts right and left." story of my life.
4:58 this really long take of Adam sawing wood is like the scene in Month Python's Holy Grail when Lancelot is running towards the castle.
That would be a great loading screen. Instead of a bar slowly filling, either Lancelot or Adam, cutting wood or running towards the castle.
5:55 shutter speed + tools built in light = neat...
I love the thickness of all the tape on the clapper board 😂
Cast iron table saw tops are very strong, but can also be brittle.
Just a heads up;)
Yeah, i thought the same thing when he was using his table saw as an anvil. Especially when he has that big heavy work bench.
love the manic energy
I’d love a “THE PEOPLE VS SAVAGE” style competition where it’s a live stream of people asking Adam to show us a tool, and he has 15 seconds to find it and show it to us…
I would love a "The People vs Savage" livestream where everyone has the same project to work on and everyone goes about it their own way while giving/getting tips.
@@Smokescale Oh my word that would be awesome. Probably missed our biggest chance during the pandemic tbf but yeah, phenomenal 🙌🏻
Oh I love this!
It's like Taskmaster for makers.
It wouldnt be fun. Im sure he knows where EVERYTHING is. Every obscure tool.
Lot's of great, prolonged footage of Adam's back in this one!
7:30 Nice to see the return of the pipe hammer!
I always think these carts are going to be top-heavy and want to tip over, and then Adam rolls them around and it's obvious they're very steady. I think that takes a keen understanding of where casters should go and how the balance works, obtained by building many rolling carts. It never ceases to amaze me. I thought that thing would be ready to tip over.
All his carts are sketchy...any one of them would take just a good bump or catch on something on the floor and over they'd go.
@@SomeGuysGarage Have you not seen him roll them around? He drags heavy machines all around that shop. He uses big casters on everything.
@@sundaynightdrunk I have but there is nothing I envy about his construction methods. Check out my latest garage tour on my channel, you'll see how sturdy I tend to make things.
"I don't think my watch is telling the right time." You said right as there were 3 wall clocks in frame on the wall in the background LOL
Adam: "I lost the spacer"
Me: looking at it behind the cup. ;O)-
Ooh I’ve been eyeing one of those
Nice to see and learning something
A lovely piece of equipment! Can't wait to see first use! I *hate* to be the voice of disapproval... but the thought of those swivel casters lining up into a small radius circle with the giant weight above-- well, gee; I hope it doesn't get out of hand someday.
That's bloody good going especially for 22 minutes. Well done.
As soon as Adam said about getting his watch repaired I could only think about Joe Jackson's Got the Time song during the sped up shots….😂
1:06 “I’ve got it in my head, so I’m just gonna start making some cuts” - exciting. And ominous.
Adam sir you are genius awesome sir thanks for sharing this video
That cart looks extremely top heavy.
That heavy device on top of that 3 legged table is asking to go for a tumble. I expect you will be happier if you add a lower frame or similar to redistribute that load to 4 corners.
I could never film myself in my workshop building stuff, I am constantly misplacing my tools, tripping over cords and hoses and talking to myself through the process of whatever it is I am making...my wife teases me. She says I am like controlled chaos.
I bought a surplus cutter master air spindle on eBay a dozen years ago... Have yet to set it up!
To be fair, it was just the spindle. I have to mount it level next to my bench mill to make use of the tslot table
Probably weight and friction holding it on the top but I would add little blocks to make sure it does not fall off the edge. It’s hollow and only needs to move a half an inch before it’s going sideways and then the cart kicks out and you got a busted casting. Nice advantage of the wooden floor though is it may survive. Scares me though. Pin nail a couple little blocks and it’s good to push around by the casting.
Love your Chanel my only concern is that stand is wobbly and to regrind end mills you need a stable platform just a thought I would possibly add locking legs to lift it off the wheels when you are ready to grind keep up the great work I’m very inspired by you and your ideas
I thought so too, looks really really top heavy and wobbly.
you remind me of myself, according to my wife, the way you slip in and out of foreign accent. also i'm a metal fabricator, so there's a few other similarities. love the channel, keep it up!
Looks a very solid machine, big motor, good buy. Thats got the beans over the humble Quorn. Looking forward to seeing it in action....And then the sharpened tool cutting.
It's like watching those old artisans Bodgit and Scarper..... Another tat build... No wonder Jamie stays clear ....
You are rocking those wolverine mutton chops
More stuff, YEA!
Adam if you see this comment watch video at 15:36 when you picked up motor look on the bottom right of screen the bolt and spacer fall off table hope this helps you find spacer 👍👍
The editing on the one is fantastic 😃
I love the occasional incongruousness that sometimes happens looking at Adam's shop. Vices, tools, dust, dirt, random gold scepter with big*ss gem on the top.....
hey adam, idea for your new machine. in the channel slides in which you move the machine back and forth and side to side, you should tap and die some threads into the ends of each channel and put a small bolt into to it to act as a stopper to prevent the machine falling out of the end guide.
I got gifted tested membership for a month (thank you so much whoever it was) and I’d love to suggest a one day build prop - the farnsworth or tesla gun from warehouse 13. Seems like something Adam would love in his collection :) is there a better place to do so than comments?
you should make a spin-down foot for it from an old stool height thread to get rid of the wiggles
I long for the day you guys fix the wall clock
Adam: I think my watch is not telling me the correct time.
Us: THERE'S A CLOCK RIGHT BEHIND YOU!!
You could add a power switch mounted to the front (maybe one of those foot safety power switches) that goes between the machine and a recessed three prong outlet that has an extension cord plugged into in. The switch would give you an obvious kill switch in case of emergency and the recessed three prong outlet would serve as safety disconnect if the cart is moved while plugged into the wall power via an extension cord.
Well, seeing what your Speedmaster has been going through lately, I'm not surprised it would need a service or two 😆 .. Epic job as always Adam!
I need to make a simple base to raise my miter saw up, and rearrange some things in my garage to be able to fit my new drill press into where it needs to go.
I used larger Cincinnati tool and cutter grinders for years. You can do it
…….it’s HUGE!
I Love repurposing tools or rebuilding where and how they set nice vid i have a very small place and placement is key lol small!
Nice speed build though I would suggest you make sure to keep your floor clean that stand with that weight that high up may not like running into a screw that fell on the floor a week ago. When you get time might suggest a piece of 1/2" plate steel attached to the underside between the wheels to get the CG lower.
I wish you had made the base square, it seems it could topple towards your soft parts.
magnetic dishes for your bolts on tear downs bro.
Your work is always so good God bless you man 🙏❤️
Yeah, especially when he remains silent.
any concern about all the weight on the top of that stand ... and being top heavy if one of the wheels were to catch something on the floor? do you plan on utilizing the pace underneath?
In the intro Adam sounds like he just started speaking and hasn't had his coffee yet.
Adam, see the new space suit unveiled by NASA yet looks familiar.
When you picked up the motor off workbench, looks like something rolled off the back of the bench.
The Victorianox wasn’t dancing today 😢
"Ohhh .. nooo! don't use yet table saw fer that... lord!"
Really didn’t understand the tattoo on your left forearm until this video. Maybe more so practicality, bad ass Adam!
Time for a sundial tattoo!
I am amazed that you used a clean shop to wipe your face. I usually start out that way and then fail.
Hi Adam… it’s Paul Golden. Super lovely build but should it be up on blocks or locked off when in use? The wheels seem to make it a little wobbly or does that not matter. Love the machine!
The parts are not lost... you just put them away somewhere so safe, that even you can't find them......
Nice build -- I never thought of using the threaded inserts for installing casters but I'll definitely be stealing that trick now. Why didn't you demonstrate the machine at the end? I spent the whole video wondering what it did and how... :)
The thing that strikes me about the threaded inserts is that they probably should have been installed from the other side. That way, when the weight of the bench pushes down on them, they are pressed further into the wood by the casters, instead of being pushed out the other side.
@@shubinternet if they're tightly attached, that shouldn't make a difference... the weight isn't on the bolts with a 4 bolt caster, it's on the wheel.
Is the workshop getting a bit cramped? I like the idea of a smallholding outside the city with a massive barn on it. There are builders who specialize in barn construction.
The gizmosity on that thing is extra high
I had a short relationship with a tool grinder , not got the patience I'm afraid. Really impressed how stable that stand came out ( I wasnt hopeful when you started) it handled the weight really well. Nice one .
Hey your accent thing , you've been watching too much Mrs Doubtfire, try listening to more Billy Connelly . 😀
When Adam was looking for lost parts on the floor I thought it would be a good idea to have the floor painted white. Maybe in his next shop.
Agreed!! They put those industrial tiles on my lab floor at work and the little bits of color are ALWAYS the size of the thing you just dropped. Floor needs to be all white!!
Hint: lay a flashlight on the floor and turn off the overhead lights to look for parts by their shadow...
2:17 ok - so my brain is a jerk and with this funky groove - it kept repeating "tri - angle stand.. for a tool.. tri - angle stand... not for fools..." you can have that - free of charge.
Another excellent 1, instead of music at times get a wildlife narrator explaining what the Savage (Mr.) Is doing😅😅😅
15:32 to 15:39 might be where you lost the spacer,, was it the one that the cable knocked off the table?
Pretty sure I saw the lost bolt+spacer go for a ride at 15:37
excellent! the wood panels should be painted thus.
I would have sworn that you had a keyless chuck on your Powermatic drill press.
where does he get all those wonderful toys? lol.
I need to barrow that......can ya bring it to Tennessee
No idea what it is, but now I want one.
This is very high center of gravity you need to widen the base aka the the space between wheels
Nice build. Wow, too bad that nice wall clock isn't at all visible behind you in the first 90 seconds while you check your watch.
