Watch the original vma performance of Madonna to understand how madonna owned the vmas since the 1st one. It was so controversial that at the end people were shook and barely clapped. This performance was the 20th anniversary of the vma's.
Well I guess you are staying in your lane with this one after the disastrous feedback from the Power of Goodbye video . This intellectually is probably understandable to them. In the original edit of this performance, Xtina’s kiss was barely shown, since the camera was on Justin. Also, one of flower girls is Madonna’s daughter.
The worst part about all of this is the camera cut to JT during the Christina kiss so people barely remember her kiss with Maonna

You guys loved this performance so much but if you haven’t seen Madonna’s appearance at the first VMA’s you’re missing how really incredible it was. Britney and Christina were recreating Madonna’s iconic performance. She appeared on top of the cake dressed as a bride like the girls and ended up rolling around on the floor during her performance and a superstar was born.

The video you saw wasn't exactly what was broadcasted back then. The camera stays on Justin longer and when it cuts to Christina's kiss, you only seem them 'moving away' from each other. That's why the reaction was so different, everywhere the next day, the picture was the kiss with Britney since it was the only available image with a clear kiss.
After so many people were upset (in the coming years) that they cut Xtina's kiss just to show an ex's reaction, the version uploaded on UA-cam shows it better.
I felt the way you did actually when I watched Madonna perform Express Yourself on the VMA's in 1989. I'll never forget watching it live. I had no idea she was going to be there, let alone open the show.
I remember this, I didn't have internet at that time and my friends were just talking about it and I was like 'hey I'm a Madonna fan, why did you watch it and I didn't?? 😣😣. The best vma performance till today.
I was 18 in 2003. I was a fan of all 3 (Madonna since I was 8 with Take a Bow, Britney since I was 12ish with her debut with Baby One More Time and shortly later Christina with Genie in a Bottle) plus, Missy Elliot was big back then by herself (I feel like she is mostly famous now by joining other artists' performances like she did here).

Same sex kissing is everywhere now on TV but then it was still a very rare shocking thing. The next day was media hysteria over it.

Hi boys! Just curious how old you were when this aired, cuz I'm picturing you as little gay children just fangirling out the same way I did in the '80s over Madonna. I was 22 and working across the Atlantic in Germany when this aired, so I saw it super late at night because of the time change. It opened the show, and my 22-year old gay self nearly had a stroke over how fabulous this was. I was doing theater at the time, so there were a lot of gay 20-somethings in our cast, and you can bet the next day, we were all like "GURRRRRRLLLLL! Did you SEE that performance?!?" Do you know where I was when I watched that kiss? In my home the next morning, going through the newspaper. They had it on the 'International news' section of one of the most respected newspapers of my country. Not even a tabloid. We didn't have cable and couldn't watch MTV and my little eleven/twelve year old gay ass was stunned and super turned on by that powerful image. It's crazy how celebrity culture was a whole other world back then and these stars really had an impact and made international news.
Anyway, I think on your Madonna journey you should watch her MTV Awards live performance of Vogue 1990. It was phenomenal and that aesthetic and choreography was so unique for a live performance in a music award show.
