Things you don't get until you are the proper age... For some reason UA-cam recommended this video. It has been more than 20 years since I last watched it and watching it again in HD is like watching a whole new movie. I should watch it in its entirely once again. This is one of the best movie endings. Very subdue, no drama, no fireworks, no climax, just a sense of comfort and gladness. As a younger man, I thought that this ending would lead the two characters to be together as a couple. Some people said it was a "re-ignition" of love, but I don't think so because they really never got around to start anything the first time around. But now that I watched it again, I get that to think about this ending as a "romantic" ending where two people get together is quite simplistic. Near the end of the movie, Jennifer (the girl) gives Chow Yun Fat her new address. He know where to find her and we can only assume he never reached out. This movie, being smartly written and cast goes beyond that. This is not a movie about "going back to your old love" (again, because they were never even new, to start with). It is more about moving on and doing well. Jennifer years later (one would assume) finds Chow Yun Fat as more mature and responsible man. She finds him doing much better than when she last saw him (gambling, drinking, gang banging and/or working small gigs). This is what I take away from it now: - It is NOT: "let's get together as a couple" - It IS: (from the girl's perspective) "You are in a much better place and you did not need me for it". And from Chow Yun Fat's perspective: "Table for two?"
One of few romantic comedies I truly enjoy due to its' unforced way of storytelling that don't have a glossy fake coating that plague most romantic stories. Really enjoyed the review and the retelling of the story.
Great video! I just watched this film for the first time tonight, and it was lovely. I found your channel because of this video, and I'll definitely be a subscriber from now on!
you must be An Autumn's Tale 秋天的童話 (1987) super fan, you intend to post this on Nov 9 (Figgy's birthday) or just a coincidence? ha ha, me too, super fan... thanks for sharing
This review is great! This film is so real and brings out the emotions at that time. Btw the ending song is not sang by Vincent aka Danny Chan. It is sang by 女方
I looked into it, and found out the song is called 在森林和原野 - In the Forest and the Wilderness. It is based on a Danish autumn folk song "The Song of Harvest ( Danish : Marken er mejet )" which appears to have been written in 1868. Not sure who popularized it for HK but Cecilia Fong Yi Kei did a disco-ish cover in 1981.
16:42 CORRECTION: The song is NOT sung by Danny Chan. It is sung by David Lui. AWKWARD!

This movie is freaken sad man. Beyond the plot itself, the intense feelings of nostalgia that the ending evokes is really intense.
