Hi.. if parking at the road side you should secure your vehicle with a handbrake before selecting park. When general stopping at red lights or general traffic a handbrake is not required unless it is night time in which you may want to use to avoid your stopping lights dazzling the driver behind.
When stopping at the red lights on the traffic light, should one use the change to parking on the automatic or just remain on drive and rest foot on the brakes
Hi @tessyokoto6825, there is no need for a handbrake on a driving stop in general. I only teach handbrake after parking up at the side of the road. A handbrake, along with neutral gear, can be used in very slow-moving traffic where you are waiting for a long time like in a traffic jam or queuing for a McDonalds. I also teach neutral and handbrake if stopped in traffic at night for a prolonged period as we don't want our stopping brake lights to continually dazzle the driver behind but this is rare for example on a 4-way temporary light where we may be waiting for serval minutes. Hope that helps :-)
Enjoyed this, not so much because I was interested in the test, more because I lived in Kettering a couple of decades back.
Glad you enjoyed it!
