I grew up in NYC, and saved all my allowance to buy tickets to the Met ballet. Although I took ballet lessons, I was never going to be a dancer, I lacked talent and didn't have the right body, but it made me very happy when I exercised and danced. I will never understand, now that I'm adult, why my parents would let me travel on buses and transfer to the subway system to get there on my own. But I got to see Fonteyn and Nureyev do Romeo and Juliet. I cried, and looked at the woman next to me and she was crying. It was so silent in the audience, for the longest time nobody clapped. Not a sound. And then the roar of applause. This is a play about the pain and destruction that hatred cause. And now, as an adult who knows more about the fragility of life and how precious any kind of love is, I think of the waste of life and talent of Nureyev, who died prematurely of AIDS. How Reagan swept it under the rug, how society discriminated against gays. In his short time on earth, Nureyev changed ballet forever, with Fonteyn. What else would he have accomplished, if he had lived to 90? What a waste. A bright supernova too soon gone. Their dancing still makes me cry.
Ironically Royal Opera didn't gave a penny to Dame Margo in retirement but Nureyev helped her in her last years. Brilliant talent; brilliant men.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Rudi is so funny when he says "Get on with it driver". I adore this footage. Now I understand why my best friend's mother Mrs. P. wore an ermine fur coat. She was a regular patron at La Place des Arts and never missed a Fonteyn/ Nureyev performance.Thank you for sharing this video clip.♡
I saw them in Romeo and Juliet in NYC, in the early 60s I think. I was raised in NYC, took ballet though I would never be good enough or have the right body to be professional. I'd save my allowance and spend it on tickets to ballets at the Met and Broadway shows. I'd travel alone, heaven only know why my parents would let me travel on the buses and subway to get there, I was so young. Watching them here reminded me that even when there were no visual cues, no spotlights or other indications... you just knew where Nureyev was going to enter from the wings. His energy and presence were so powerful, I could even feel it when he hadn't appeared yet. My ballet teacher once took some of us to see him backstage. He was very quiet, sweet, he said we could call him Rudi. The most beautiful face and powerful legs. It was very kind of him to let us visit, he must have been exhausted.
I think she wore blinders where Tito was concerned. One of her assistants said her revolutionary tendencies were to the point of lunacy. She did not want to dance with Nureyv at first.

Fantástico, de una intensidad que solo ellos dos eran capaces de lograr. Mil gracias ❤❤❤

Their mission together was indeed profound....
It wasn’t Reagan’s fault 🙄. Maybe Fauci and the CDC’s destructive early AIDS “treatments” …

Maravilha Rudolf e Fonteyn 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Счастье для двоих, она спасла и дала ему и себе шанс!!!
Che coppia magnetica@
Rudy +Margot= Grandiosi.
Sitting here thinking... I cannot imagine still performing st the age of 60. It wears you out.
It's exactly what I was thinking, myself ...
Fonteyn was a star, the rest of us are just human
Nureyev was not "amicable" with "Convent Garden" that kicked him in the a.. He didn't deserved this treatment.
I had the honor to see them dance Romeo and Juliet in Philadelpjia

What a wonderful memory of meeting Nureyev. Thank you for sharing what must have been an incredible experience!
@@MarySanchez-qk3hp I did the same when I was a kid. I would go to the ballet alone as a child.
I wouldn't have been thrilled to dance to that music either!
Моргнул в объектив с полуулыбкой и уже обаял полмира !!!!
Светлый Руди!
💖💖💖🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Margot is 58 years old here??? Amazing
"Uncooperative"😂... to whom? They certainly were not working for the newsmen!
Какое у него тело!!!!
" Get on with it driver ! " :)
Who ever, dressed Rudy in black w/ a dark background (at lest on video) was big mistake.
crazy Martha Graham...!and the choreography? Martha Graham still?...PUAJ! not as horrid as the Devil thing that was ...omg so bad..
🙏❤
Heard about that Martha Graham dance.
Cooperate with soul mate。A tacit understanding。
How else to survive n such a youth oriented world.
It was indeed an honor and privelege
Rudolf was quite right. Sylvie Guillem had the same snobbery to cope with at the Royal ballet and was known as mademoiselle No.
Kudos to Margot for being whipped around like that. How old is she here??? In.her 50's???
''Lucifer'' huh? Yep thats what l thought of him too. Brazen!
Totally hideous choreography or lack of , unflattering .
what i wrote above! UGH!
Rudi never understood Dame Margot was first and foremost a politician without exception.
I think she wore blinders where Tito was concerned. One of her assistants said her revolutionary tendencies were to the point of lunacy. She did not want to dance with Nureyv at first.
I think so.Margot was a prestige dancer and Nureyev figured like a second dancer. I am sure he had an affair with Margot but only for money
@@marydore4223 He had not. In this years he was together with Erik Bruhn.
