That's so kool! 0:42 You found my car and ham shack! 👍👍👍
Looked pretty good too!
I drilled holes in the spaces between the magnets on mine. Added some stainless bolts with long threads so I could add ground wires when needed. I usually throw out a 5m stainless steel ground when in use. All HF tunes to deeper swr dips with the ground.
MOAR ground, MOAR better!
I used to drive around with a tri-mag and an ATAS120. Never an issue but the paint under the magnets did get scratched up a bit.
I worry about that metal on metal contact.
I’ve been driving around with my ATAS120A on a triple mag mount for a little over two years, speeds up to 80mph. No problems!
In fact, I’m 74/100 towards Mobile DXCC with it and my FT-891 at 5-50 watts (because 100w is pointless). WB3CFN
I have been researching mobile HF antennas for quite a while, and this one might just be the one I pick. I think I would drive around with it as long as the magnets are strong enough to hang on to my car. I'm thinking more along the lines of putting a permanent mount on my car that won't be bothered by the wind. Thanks for the video! 73
Yeah, I would definitely prefer a permanent mount. I have one that bolts onto the front fender and comes through the gap between the hood and fender that I really like - only has a 2m antenna on it right now.
That's a nice looking radio, The tri-mag seemed to work well, tnx Man.
Thanks for watching!
I had a similar Antenna named Outbacker 1899 a couple Years ago.. A Piece of Jay if you ask me. I just broke it into Pieces to make sure it's not gong to eat too much Sspace in the Recycling Container til the Dump Truck comes to empty it out. 😎 Happy Weekend Steve...💯🙋♂
Mine seemed to work pretty well overall - wonder what happend with yours?
That is similar to to the first antenna I purchased many years ago. If you are looking for a Magnet mount, consider the Diamond K702M. Used for multiple trips from Ohio to Florida and Ohio to Texas, and back, and never an issue. Next time I see you, remind me to tell you the max speed I had the vehicle up to, with it on the roof. I even had my ATAS mounted up on it at one point without an issue, but I was a bit nervous about that one.
The ATAS is heavy, bulky and expensive! I'd be worried!
I ALWAYS drive with a tri mag mount on my car most times without an antenna but I have had Ham Sticks on it at 60+ MPH. However, I did have it lift off the car once with a 600W Ham Stick but with regular ham sticks, no issue. I have a well made tri mag mount and the rubber is permanently mounted glued on the mount.
I think its an excellent choice for temporary deployments.
Yes I have driven with a triple magma with 102 inch whip on it stays there just fine
Nice!
I drive with a triple mount and ham sticks. I have kind of a lead foot but the mount stays with no issues regardless of which band hamstick I use. Btw, I use shark full size hamsticks with it, not the shorties.
Living on the edge!
I would, and have driven with a triple mag-mount antenna. I used it on the trunk of my car before I sold it. I then put it on the roof of my truck, and ran it on there. I did have to put the antenna down when I went in the garage, however... No need now, however, now that I have a smaller antenna with a hood mount.
Awesome! I've driven with a 2m mag mount plenty of times myself.
The trick I use is to face two of the mag discs forward for more grip when driving if needed. Otherwise I swap to a shorter antenna.
I think that's smart!
I've driven short distances with a ham stick on a triple mag mount. Usually to or from the park that's down the road from me or in between close parks on a rove.
But not "highway speeds"?
@@temporarilyoffline I drove to Cleveland one day this winter with a Signal Stick mounted outside my car. I don't know who was more traumatized--me or the antenna, LOL. It's back in shape now though.
@@MikeN2MAK I've got almost 2000 miles on a signal stick myself - they don't like the cold!
Wait a minute? You're in Missouri? No wonder you seem so smart, good looking and enjoyable to watch!
Thanks!
My biggest worry driving with that antenna up is loss of the jumper wire. You didn't say how secure those plugs felt. I don't worry about the mag mount, but the strength of the antenna base and 3/8 to UHF adapter.I suppose that you could use fishing line to guy the top of the coil to the front of the hood (I'd use 2, going to the corners, so that I didn't have to think about aerodynamic flutter. The antenna seems like a high power version of the MFJ-1899T.
I think that cars should come with coax entry panels.
Thanks for the review.
I would have to do some proving if I were to drive with this setup myself, maybe a ziptie or a Velcro strap to keep the jumper. They felt strong, but 60mph+ is also pretty strong too. I don't do a lot of HF while driving, there are a lot of boxes to check for that setup!
@@temporarilyoffline Hear, hear. (Or, since you're currently in the south, amen.)The only HF in motion I do is as a passenger. The older I get, the more I want to pay attention to my driving, which helps me get even older.
You are a smart man!
No mag mount thank you for the video
You Bet!
Triple mag mounts are nice in the fixed position operation mode. 73
Can Confirm!
I like the you say the location with the park number..
Thanks!
Nice video! I use a TMM on the hood of my jeep when portable. I have not driven long distance but I have driven about 6 miles and nothing over 50mph with a 20m ham stick no issues. What rails are on the 891?
I got those rails off of thingiverse and had a friend print them out.
Seems like a really nice day. I love the countryside.
Yeah, outside of losing a radio... it was a great day!
@@temporarilyoffline dang. I didn't realize it had went completely out. Bummer.
@@bryantwalley Well no HF... still good on 2/70. But on the list of fun things to do now!
@@temporarilyoffline maybe a peek on the Nuggets stream?
@@bryantwalley Could be!
Is that heliax jacket on your power into the FT-891? If so, that's awesome/hilarious! 73,
The black plastic part is "split loom" for cleaning up a multi cable run in your car.
reminds me of the old Outbacker from Australia.
I've seen a few versions of this one!
I have a single mag mount, but it's not XYL approved!😂
I can install a discreet lip mount or similar. :)
Sometimes we have to hide in plain site.
I want to know what kind of videos did you have in that black box I will give the one and have much money run and where can I find one at
Awesome, here is some more info on that black box and a link in the description: ua-cam.com/video/7ouTzBsM9rA/v-deo.html Case: geni.us/siq3Li
I drive around with a Sirio 5000 on a single big magmount on the roof. Mostly, it stays put.
Mostly! 🤣
I am looking for a good compromise to focus on the high bands the next few years when mobile. I only have a 10 meter rig in car with triple mag mount and 4ft firestick antenna. Maybe I will try this antenna if I pick up another rig. I could even get one now to use on 10. How would you say it has performed on 10? How do you think it compares to say my firestick?
I non-coil setup would outperform this multi-band coil based setup any day... But you'd lose the multi-band. In ham radio it's all a compromise, so pick the one that works for you and have fun! 😁
Where did you get the mirror extension on your driver side mirror. I would like to get one.
Here you go: amzn.to/4cX2wRw works great when your trailer is wider than your truck! I've used them on my Ford and my jeep.
Those look like strong magnets. How difficult is it to break them free when you want to remove the mount?
It wasn't hard. The rubber boots help. If it's temporary, place a towel under the mount to make it easier and less scratch prone.
I have the Same Eddie Bauer as you and was wondering if you can Lend any insight.
I Have an HF Rig in my Truck and i have it connected to a Magnet Mount Antenna right on the roof and Have the Radio Operated Via Bioenno Battery.
When the Truck is off, Noise floor is S-0.
When I Turn the truck on, The noise floor Jumps to S-5.
Any ideas or leads i can follow?
Thanks in Advance.
My noise floor jumps up in this video also. I haven't solved it, but it is my understanding that all the chassis parts need to be bonded to be successful.
I glued a tri mount on, when I finally peeled it off the paint underneath was new. 😂
Paint protection!
HF-008 delivered today! Look forward to breaking it in this evening.

Sweet! Good Luck!
SO239 on the coax ? *I See a PL259*
There's always one ...😁
I've driven with my triple mag mount on the vehicle. Where did you get that antenna?
I got this one from Radioddity - there is a link in the description with a discount code to save you some money.
Thanks
Soooo many antennas, not enough time. This one is on my "to get" list.
I say this every day!
interesting antenna ! I have a triple mag mount like that but is MNO mount. I have adapter to 3/8 or SO 239. I re did the coax to Mil spec RG 58C/U . better at VHF/UHF. I have the Comet VHF/UHF antenna on it now. also match MURS and GMRS. I drive with it on and no problems. I know a girl with a Honda Civic with that mag mount. the 3/8 one. used on CB. she has fiber glass 102 in whip on it. looks like a radio controlled car . she talks all over the world on CB with it. her radio like the QT60 but is the CRT version of same Anytone radio. she even talks back home to England on CB at times. now she in cold snowy NY . WHY? Born in Manchester. as much as I know. Found her on CB . I super glued the rubber pads on the magnets. 73's
The super glue didn't eat through the pads?
@@temporarilyoffline nice catch. I miss spoke. I put super glue on my stack toroid's to hold them together . i used Blue RTV silicone to hold the pads on. it is sitting buy my front door now and not on car because the car got washed today. weather nice in NY ! it stays on at 70 Mph on I90 !
@@robertmeyer4744 that blue RTV is probably great for that.
@@temporarilyoffline I got it in black /red hi temp/ wight hi voltage rated as well. comes in calk tubes as well . I do have wight kitchen and bath as well that GE brand. great for RV .
@@robertmeyer4744 I bet. Thanks
Got a link for the antenna?
Yeah, radioddity doesinks weird - in the description you'll see a link to the RO home page that gives you a discount and from there search for "HF-008"
7:35 That’s not sped up, you actually talk that fast. Good thing there were other quick talkers out there hunting.
I am a fast talker, so much to share, so little time.
Looks like my Outbacker perth antenna
Yeah, everything old is new again!
But it's not a skip whip
@@wireless80211x I need a skip whip
Negatve on the magmounts while driving
+1
Enjoy watching your POTA in my home state KF0MOE
@@Tom-jd1rm I didn't do any pota. That was TO doing pota.
@@Tom-jd1rm Hey Tom! It was a very relaxing place to be!
This looks just like the Abbree HF-3 but is a little higher priced.
I'll take a look!
Is that a outbacker knock off?
Sure is!
Not concerned with the wind but low hanging trees, low bridges, drive thrus.. I will hit them.. every-single-time. That may cause magnet failure. Would Totally be my fault too.
I had a lip mount on the back side of the hood of my jeep running a hamstick. I was about the same story. Pulled over on the side of the interstate and took that bad idea down!
Noise blanker?
I tried that, didn't help enough. Great idea for some more experimentation!
Sounds like finals😢
Yep, this radio had a 50% output power issue before being installed and I need to address that also.
My 7100 does the same.
No power out on SSB? Mine needs a better diagnosis and a few fixes.
@@temporarilyofflineYou were in my area! Also, my 7100 does this very same thing. Did you find a fix? I like the 7100 but have had several things go wrong with it starting with the encoder.
I glued the rubber boot to the magnet.
Good idea, what kind of glue did you use?
@@temporarilyoffline Loctite super glue professional
@@AdamosDad that didn't eat the boot up?
@@temporarilyoffline No, it will eat on organics like cloth though, I have seen that stuff start to smoke, but it worked well on the rubber. I like your videos by the way and will come back. My specialty in the Navy was HF transmitters and antenna systems, so that is the kind of thing I tend to look for on UA-cam. ✋73's🎙KD9OAM🎧
@@AdamosDad hey, thanks! I do a lot of experimenting and kit building. Usually if it's not supposed to... I'm the one making it do. Looking forward to chatting on the next antenna vid!
I drive with a single mag 2m/70cm all the time at highway speeds. KF0NNQ.
I've done that too, works great!
Are you full time rving
I am: www.youtube.com/@livingforalivingrv
New-ish F150 so mag mounts ain't gonna stick.
Yeah, that aluminum is a pain!
@temporarilyoffline If it bothers me, I will screw a steel plate onto the bed cover
@@LeeMcc_KI5YPR They make a mounting bracket that goes behind the 3rd brake light... but they want way to much money for it. I'd imagine the "back rack" is actually cheaper and doesn't look like it would interfere much with using the truck as a truck either.
@@temporarilyoffline Josh used one of those on his Lightning. Yeah, spendy. I could even just drill/seal the top, too, and permanently attach a mount.
@@LeeMcc_KI5YPR I use one of these on my 1999 expedition: amzn.to/4azSOCE I wonder if there is a newer version for newer trucks?
No, I would not drive with a tri-mag.
I'm not sure I would either.
Narrow UK roads, low bridges and tree branches so that's a no from me.
"break away antenna mount" 😲
Actually, it’s more like an Outbacker antenna. Don’t tell me you’re too young to remember those.😉 73 Jen
Young is relative, right? I "feel" young. 😎
Nothing new about it. It's just the "Outbacker" resurrected.
Yeah, not much new in ham radio these days.
Great video! de W2CSI
