Bei uns in der Schweiz wäre es aber das Nachtessen oder wie wir auf Schweizer-Deutsch sagen "Znacht oder Znachtässe". ✌

you are not an expat, but an immigrant who is intergrating well! :) an expat is someone who stays for a definite amount of time in a country and utilises their expertise in a company :)
German here. Most locals will appreciate your trying to speak their language and be willing to support you as much as possible. That probably will include teaching you necessary additional words, switching to another language (including much pointing at things). This is not only true for Germany, though. I had similar experiences in Greece, France, or Italy.
If you are already living in Germany, try finding a group of Germans with similar interests ("Verein") like you. That will expand your vocabulary in this subject/area of interest and additionally increase your social contacts, which also makes learning a language a lot easier. You may have to ask your new contacts to speak German, though.
