I think your training is the best! That’s real life training.
So many times I'm out and about with my dog and people will approach me to talk and mention that they had to leave their dog at home due to behavior issues. That, to me, is particularly sad. I take all my clients' dogs out hiking, to the farmers' market, Home Depot, the hospital, to the schoolyard when kids are loading on and off buses--whatever it takes to ensure there is no dog left behind!
I think he is one of the few that really understands dogs and training . I love his way of thinking and training. !!! He has made an influence in my way for sure. I just wish I lived closer so I could come visit I look forward to all the videos
Amen! Above all, our dogs are companions and fellow-travelers. If you're not going to make your dog part of all that you do....work, play, relax...why have one? Anything short of that is to cheat both yourself and your dog.
I live on Long Island and have had 9 dogs over the last 30 years. They've been great for our family of 5. I retired 5 years ago and 2 years ago purchased a yellow lab pup. I've become that crazy dog owner I thought I'd never become....we hike 5-7 miles daily, go to the beach, do yard work, vacation, chill out on the deck, etc. Kids are long gone...got grandkids now. My wife and I are really enjoying our latest addition. He's not only a physical companion he brings us joy and spiritual comfort. If you would have told me 10 years ago that I'd get this attached to a dog I would have told you that you were nuts!! 🤣🤣

Totally agree! Having 140 pound intact male livestock guardian dog it wasn’t always easy at first taking him out in public or even for walks. So I just kept doing it until it got easy. Persistence and lots of early socialization paid off and now 7 years later he’s well behaved anywhere. Btw don’t you have snakes in Kentucky? That’s what would keep me out of the brush pile lol
I agree there is no substitute for getting the dog used to the environnments you expect them to go.
My Great Pyrenees is 5 years old rescue. I knew she would be reacting to unfamiliar dogs during our walks in the neighborhood. It’s taken some time for us to be more relaxed and non reactive when being approached by strangers and other dogs. I’m very proud she’s managing and I’m more confident messaging to her that I’m evaluating the environment. It’s not perfect but she’s becoming very popular with neighbors and children.
Thank you for rescuing a Pyr! The key to success with a LGD is recognizing and honoring thousands of years of breeding (genetics) to do one specific job and do it without human supervision making all of their own decisions. So not expecting them to be a Lab or a German Shepherd because they can’t and people should know that these are serious dogs and then so many wouldn’t be abandoned because they thought they were getting a “cute fluffy dog “
I was neglected as a child and when I grew up I had no idea how to react to people or anything really.i raised my kids and dogs in life.if someone asked me to come over for dinner or whatever and said don't bring your kids. I didn't go. you can't leave a dog in a box and expect him to know what he's supposed to do.

Stonnie's got some good helpers there on that brush pile. Dogs learn best from other dogs, your use of your trained mentor dogs just makes your job easier. God bless you in your efforts, Stonnie.

Actually I just picked up two labs from the same litter a fox red male he will be my first red lab ever and his sister a black, so far I have had them 5 days and yeah adventure training each day and a nice long play time a little leash training goes a long way for a pump, today was first real off trail in the woods in semi deep leaves and minor obstacles 10weeks old loved every minute of it. And yeah a tired dog is a happy dog. Your the best stonie thanks
Such a joy when the dog is out on the property following while doing outdoor chores. Social media is a double edged sword that gets many wrapped around the axle on training.

The more I watch your videos the more I realize that I raised my dogs and children pretty much the same way. There have been many dogs and the kids have long since been grown and gone, and I'm pleased with how things have turned out. Of course, there's always that one dog and, likewise, that one child that will seriously test the boundaries. 😳 So, choose your battles, but choose them very, very wisely. I've really enjoyed watching you with your charges, and at 75 many of the pups remind of those who have passed through my life. ❤
Agree. My dogs are with me 24/7. I use 1 word commands. Keep it simple. Example If I say their name they know it means that dog needs to come. If I say dogs they know that means every do needs to come. Its not hard, people just need to spend time with the dogs.

I completely agree with your philosophy. Ya gotta admit that breed matters, though. Labs have a different mind set.
It just might be harder to get this from naturally independent, headstrong dogs.
It is harder. My terrier is stubborn and pushes the boundaries every minute of every day. It's exhausting, but extremely rewarding. Her behavior forces me to set my own boundaries and constantly reassess the actions I feel are acceptable to me. It's a struggle to remain consistent but when she 'gets it'; there is no better feeling.

I love your videos! I've been watching for about a year and now have a 6mo GSD named Cleo. She's a happy and outgoing darling. I wonder if you could discuss training for safety (keeping distance) around tools, such as machetes, knives, or power tools. I'm currently trying to train Cleo to ignore a broom, shovel, and rake, but with limited success. She wants to be part of the action 😁

Can you tell what kind of tick control you use if any for being outdoors, or your preferences?
I will be taking the maremma to the local nursing home this summer. She does a lot of cute tricks. The tricks are easier than controlling initial jumping, and at 9 years old, I hope she's over the excited peeing. She's polite when well exercised.
So, yes if you are getting LGDs to be polite, I agree. Trick training is easy if liver sausage is involved.
Teach a young dog to want to be with you! 20’ drag rope treats & praise , happy voice , don’t let run off on it’s own !

Thanks for all your videos. I wasn't a fan of Jack Russell because I have seen to many little barking machines. I got a JR puppy last year and followed your training style. He is such sweet little boy now. I think I can let him off leash now for a reliable recall.

I totally agree, that's the best way of training.
So our black lab Hooley is everything that any owner could want..... except when she spots deer or pheasants. We go out on adventures in the wood everyday no matter what the weather. If we have seen the deer before her or the pheasant and she is off lead we have a chance of stopping her... but if taken by surprise she is off.but always returns within a couple of minutes . We never punish her for running off. So could you show us how you deal with a dogs natural prey drive. We spent hours going out at night and finding deer when on lead she sits calmly and watches them. She doesn't chase squirrels she ignores horses even when off lead. She has never chased our cats
It has to be said when she catches a pheasant she presents it to us beautifully... delivers it to hand😂. She is 21 months so still young. Thaks

I take my dog everywhere. He's really active and very smart. He's a husky collie cross , i train him on the go , i can take him anywhere pleasure to be with .

What kind of dog is Onyx? He doesn't quite look like the other black labs (long thin tail, slimmer body profile, etc.). Maybe a mix?
I noticed that too. Ears, neck and tail. weimaraner ? Pointer? Flatcoat?

My black Lab’s name is Onyx also.
I expect all my companions to be intelligent and make good decisions. Why would I expect any less from my dog? I wish there was a facility where we could practice more behaviors and deepen our bond.
Look at Sampson being the goodest boy ❤ you are right-dogs that are well behaved are better than the ones the spin and do fancy tricks.
But can a dog learn these qualities (how to be calm, obedient, polite) later in life? Or, is there something imperative about teaching when they are young?
How can, or should I prevent my pup from chewing and eating sticks the whole time we are in our adventure walks? He’s an 11 week old lab

Good ideas. Is that smaller black dog part Plott? It has a different tail and ears than the other black lab. Although the tail doesn't stand up like a saber. Plotts can be black, don't have to have brindle.
Onyx has a little Plott in him as well as GSP/mountain cur. Good eye!

Love how you do it. No idea what I'm doing wrong with my mutt, but he will not be polite. He's a bit of a dick, and he doesn't care what I say or do.
Is there anyone here who brings their normal pet dog with them to the supermarket? Because that's what I honestly would like to do. But I don't feel like that's an accepted thing that people will understand.
I’m not a fan of taking dogs to places people expect to be really clean.

I think cleanliness is the main issue indeed. Even if your dog is technically really clean, I think there is also a cultural element where all animals are considered inherently dirty.
And then the supermarket is not only a very public place, but also one where a certain unavoidable proximity to other people should be anticipated on. Which is not fun for those with allergies or a fear of dogs.
So I do see why bringing your dog there would at least be frowned upon, if they let you in.
In America its illegal for animals to be in businesses that sell food. Health code violation if I remember correctly. Except individually-trained-to-mitigate-a-disability service animals... and then the service dog etiquette is to stay a reasonable distance away from food areas. Reasonable distance varies based on the dog's size. Lots of businesses are pet friendly though. And many stores now do curbside pickup - no reason your dog can't be in your vehicle for said pickups.
