  • Eagle Rock, Los Angeles
DescriptionEagle Rock is an eclectic neighborhood northeast of Downtown, with working class roots and a hip, laid-back vibe. Vintage shops, coffeehouses, Southern-inspired diners and old-school Italian joints line commercial strips that surround quaint residential blocks. A retro-cool bowling alley and Occidental College, a small liberal arts school, liven up the area, along with several craft beer-focused watering holes.

I miss living there, grew up there but unfortunate events sent me out. Home will always be here for me

This is very cool. I was born in Glendale in 1963, but I grew up in Eagle Rock until 1979 (when we moved out of state) at the house at 8:09 on the right (the one with an “Income Tax” sign on it). It’s directly across the street from the Bank of America parking lot. The Bank of America was there when I lived there, but looked a lot different.
The land where the Comfort Inn is before that used to be a taxi cab lot, and prior to that it was a used car dealership.
And just past the house used to be an open dirt lot, followed by a building which used to make packaging materials (like cardboard containers for Sara Lee pies).
After that was a One-Day paint and body shop, which prior to that was a Shopping Bag grocery store that closed down immediately after the 1971 Slymar earthquake.
The Mobil gas station was there, but the Shell station was an Exxon gas station at the time.
At 8:38 the Swork store at the corner of Colorado and Eagle Rock used to be a Rexall drug store, and I’d spent countless hours in there in the candy aisle trying to decide which candies I’d buy with the few coins I had (35¢ back then could buy two or three decent candy bars).
At 13:09 I used to hang out and get ice cream at the Foster’s Freeze just past the Burger King (which wasn’t there back then). It’s amazing that the Foster’s Freeze is still there.
It’s always cool to see my old stomping grounds. The last time I actually visited there was almost two years ago. So much has changed since I last lived there 44 years ago.

I lived in Eagle Rock between '66 and '75(Age 11 to age 18). I recognized where the KFC was, the Sizzler was, the Miniature Golf was, and Mayfair Market and Sav-On drugstore...SAV-ON! DJ's House of Music was in that shopping center, too. So was H&R British Fish and Chips.
Taco Bell looks about the same, except for the sign, so does Jack in the Box. There used to be an arrow sticking out of the clown mouth, remember that?
Yosemite Park was right up the big hill from where we lived on Westdale Ave and Campus Road. We also lived on "Little Saginaw".
I remember when they turned Eagle Rock Lanes into a post office! Bummer. Not sure if All Star Lanes is still open.
Me and my friend John Merkle would travel underground in a water channel pipe from Eagle Rock Park to Townsend Ave and then pop up from a rain gutter and surprise girls as we heard them walking by us. We stopped doping that when we heard water rushing our way during a sudden rainstorm. Just after we got out of there the water came flooding past us as we were still climbing up the metal rungs to get out. Another few seconds and we'd have been washed all the way to the ocean... maybe.
Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end... but time marched on and flew like an arrow. Your old stomping grounds I once had easily thought were all mine! Every day was an adventure, all day, and all night long too. My mom let me stay out all night if I wanted.
We also went down to Suicide Slides and slid down bare bottom when it got covered with moss. I'd catch baby catfish in the pond with a piece of window screen, then sell then for .25 apiece to the pet store in the same shopping center Sav-On was in. I worked at the KFC there when I was 16. The manager "Susy" would buy me and my friend San Miguel beer and let us keep it in the walkin cooler until we got off work, then we'd go to Yosemite Park and drink it while singing Beatle songs. Of course we had some weed too. We'd trade the pieces of left over chicken that hadn't sold at the end of the night to Tommy's Burgers for a sack of chili cheeseburgers, they being sick of burgers and us so very sick of eating free chicken.
I got a million Eagle Rock/ERHS stories I could share with you! Lots of "Glendale" ones too. I lived in Glendale when I was 8, then later when I turned 18, then later in my 30's and 40's. "Maine" says "hello". If you're anywhere close to age 66 you might know some of the people I once knew back then.

Yes you saw that correctly. It’s sad to see, but you know what the town and its people have been pro active to deal with the homeless situation. My family is still there but I’m not. Makes me proud to be from Eagle Rock!
