The 49ers' need for another last second miracle deserves a deep rewind

  • It’s January 14th, 2012. We’re at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. With 14 seconds to play, down three, and facing a third down, the 49ers need a score to keep their playoff hopes alive - without needing to roll the dice in overtime. The Saints meanwhile can end this here with a takeaway and head to the NFC Championship Game themselves. To understand how we got here and to appreciate everything this moment represents, we need to rewind.

As a Giants fan, that 49ers team was unbelievably good. I still say that that was the best team that year and one of the best 49ers teams ever.
We were lucky that Eli was carrying the Giants team on his back that year.

This is my all time favorite game. It managed to showcase both the how great the offense and defense could be yet was still tight and showed how high level the competition was. My favorite moment was Justin Smith tackling Brees and the lineman trying to block him at the same time. Its got a special place in my memory.

As a 49ers fan, this game absolutely made me cry. I was 17 when this game happened, so I could tell you all about Tim Rattay, Ken Dorsey, Nate Clements, etc., This game was strong vindication for Alex even deciding to come back in 2011 and for all the crap he endured for the six years prior.
Edit: I wish you talked about Vernon getting kicked out of the game in 2008 against Seattle. Vernon had been a largely uninspiring bust, but Mike Singletary kicking Vernon out not only made a good sound bite, but it made Vernon grow up and he went to the Pro Bowl in 2009.

He might not have had the physical gifts that Gronk and Tony Gonzalez had but between Tonys peak and Gronks peak it was always Davis and Gates battling for best TE in league...and id argue it was Davis that ushered in the Tight End being essentially a tall fast 3rd reciever and less of a blocker/just work the across short middle and flats

As a 35 year old midwesterner, this was the first and only 49ers home game I have ever been to! I was torn between going to this one or waiting for the NFC Championship, but since the Saints were really good that year the Championship game wasn't guaranteed so I chose this game. I can't begin to explain how amazing it was to be in the house on this night! It is a memory I will take with me to the grave. All of the lead changes at the end of the game, and that final drive! Oh man that final drive! It's like everything you dream of as a fan! When Alex hit Vernon in the end zone to win it, I have never felt more pure ecstasy as a sports fan than that moment. I think most Niners fans appreciate the grit of Alex Smith. With regards to that lockout, Smith was doing all of that while not under contract. He could have gotten hurt and the Niners would have been under no obligation to re-sign him. Everyone was singing Brees’s praises for doing the exact same thing, but no one outside of the faithful did the same for Alex. He got booed, benched, and blamed his first few years and handled it all like a champ.

I understand why it was glossed over, but a big part of this game was Bountygate. The Saints defense actively tried to injure Smith, Gore, and Davis at the behest of their DC. It was this game that started the investigations that led to major suspensions and one of the biggest stains of modern football.

They keep deleting commens mentioning this and pretending like the is nothing to see here.
The most poetic thing is that it was the 49ers defense that cleanly put the whooping on the Saints. The "Fumble" they gloss over in talking about the game? Helmet ot helmet by Donte Whitner vs the runner.
Justin Smith sacking Brees by pushing his LT into him and taking him down with one hand and a linemen between them?
The WHOOPING Bowman, Willis nad Goldson put on the Saints receivers.
Greg Williams was asking who wanted to be more physical and offered a bounty, but it was the 49ers who brought the Madden 2005 hit stick.

1:43 "Smith outlasted that GM" Well, that GM had a really bad drinking problem. He is seen in the NFL as one of the est talent scouts/evaluators in NFL history and helped build the Seahawks super team after leaving the 49ers that went to two super bowls, but was fired again because of his drinking problems. He then joined Mike Shanhan and helped find a lot of talent to help Washington make the playoffs before... you guessed it, losing his job because of his drinking problems. Now he just makes a bunch of money as a consultant to many teams with his agency and his hard work at evaluating talent in upcoming drafts, the free agent market and guys going under the radar on practice squads.
Don't act like he was a bad GM, he might be one of the best to have ever done it.

This is one of my favorite games of all time.... As a 49er fan the 2011 season was special for for me as a 49er fan and because that the 49ers were just a bad team they were awful.. so awful that they sent records on offense that no other offense would want to have and we were considered having the worst offense ever in the defense was decent but there were always on the field... I was always a fan of Alex Smith and I I wanted him to be very successful and between 2005 to 2010 we had Mike Nolan and Mike secondary as head coaches who both criticize Alex Smith publicly and he had seven different offensive coordinators.... I still remember that infamous Sunday night game against the Philadelphia eagles when we were losing really bad and the crowd was saying we want car... Meaning they wanted the backup quarterback David Carr.. And when Michael cemetery got fired after the 2010 season he said that to the media you have to have a quarterback... Alex Smith never pointed fingers never criticized anyone and you took a lot of criticized from the media and the 49er fans and anybody in his position because his contract was up after the 2010 season.. people saying that he was a bust and he's just be a backup somewhere else and get a fresh start but here comes Jim Harbaugh who convinces Alex Smith to stay... He knew that he couldn't find a quarterback right away so why not have Alex Smith start in San Francisco rather than be a backup somewhere else.. Alex Smith was never the same again and he played very well and I really wanted him Frank Gore Vernon Davis and Patrick Willis to really get super bowl ring because it took a lot of years to finally get it and winning season.... If Kyle Williams didn't fumble one of those two turnovers in the NFC championship game I believe we would have won and beaten the Patriots....

This may seem like a super obscure suggestion for a Rewinder, but 2012 Duke vs. UNC....football 👀
The Jamison Crowder game winning TD catch clinched bowl eligibility for Duke and was symbolic of the complete resurrection of a football program under the guidance of David Cutcliffe (coached both Peyton and Eli Manning). And the fact this happened in a rivalry game makes it all the sweeter

I was there in-person for the first ever Harbaugh era game against Seattle on 9-11-11. Ted Ginn was on fire that day, and Candlestick was buzzing! It was my first ever NFL game as well. So much fun!

The Catch II is one of my earliest, if not first, football memories. Steve Young was my idol. Fun fact - he ran for a 49 yard TD the day I was born against the Vikings, the famous one where he fell into the end zone. Anyway - I can so vividly remember this moment in real time as an adult. I was so profoundly happy for both Alex Smith and Vernon Davis, as it felt like a culmination of years of personal and professional growth for them both. Seeing VD break down and cry to the sideline, like TO did before him, was just such a humanizing moment. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

One thing that is not emphasized enough is that drafting Alex Smith over Aaron Rodgers was totally defensible at the time. After Smith was picked, 23 teams passed on Rodgers. Smith joined a franchise that was in disarray…he hardly stood a chance. But he has this golden moment. I was so happy for him.

    • @ChrissyCruz925
      @ChrissyCruz925 8 місяців тому

Rodgers went to Berkeley he’s a Northern California kid everyone wanted the 49ers to draft him that was the hype for months leading up to the draft Bay Area people already knew rodgers potential not many 49ers fans knew much about Alex smith from Utah….and no other qbs came off the board In between Alex and rodgers so those 23 teams weren’t looking for a qb
