Hey Jack! I was glad to see that you were taking part in this sad tag! Your choices were spot on! Great use of Graham Parsons Love Hurts! I used Nazareth in my vid for a different question. MGMT! Man when that album came out I was blown away by its unique sound and originality! Great LP! So stoked you showed Bay City Rollers! Not sure you knew this but I am a HUGE Bubblegum Rock fan and have been since I was wee lad! In fact I’ve done a few Bubblegum Rock videos that can be found in the Cosmic Archives! LoL! Great video Jack! Have an Awesome Day! Peace ✌️👽
Cheers for watching, Brian! Yeah, I knew you were the man for bubblegum and sunshine pop! I’d imagine there’s loads of well priced bubblegum in the states… that kinda thing can be pretty expensive in the UK. That MGMT is a beauty… their later ones are great too, just not as commercial. Don’t suppose there’s a video on psychedelic soul in the Cosmic Archives? Looking for stuff like the Temptations Cloud 9 and The Chamber Brothers Time has Come Today…. Eugene McDaniels Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse is next on my list. I remember you showed something before that might have been psych soul, think it had “Mansions” in the title?! 🤔 cheers, Jack
Jack, thanks for hopping on this tag my man. Excellent response. My wife and kids taunt me regularly for listening to sad sack shit. You know it’s bad when my kids are 5 and 8. 😂 The Warren Zevon selection is perfect for this tag. I actually thought of including a prompt for “Song you want played at your funeral.” But thought that went a bit too far. (I do have a funeral playlist though) Thanks for backing me on “For No One.” That song. Man. Just kills me every time. Your analysis of it was far better than mine. Juno soundtrack is great. Sonic Youth’s cover of “Superstar” first appeared on a 90s tribute compilation to The Carpenters. It’s a great comp. Bay City Rollers! Yes! Great response. Really enjoyed it. Cheers! ✌🏻
Excellent video Jack. The thumbnail made me laugh out loud! 😂 I wouldn’t even know where to begin making a video like this one, so I’m even more impressed! Cheers from Morten
This is only the second video in this tag that I’ve seen, but from the lyrics you’ve been sharing, I think you might have the saddest bastard selection!
I love the song these days by Nico! My mum went out with one of the Bay City Rollers haha.. being a fan of Gary Glitter is very alarming indeed haha.. Hope you are well Jack! Awesome video! :)
Oh yeah, Nico’s version is the best one! That’s mental that your mum went out with one of the Rollers 😂 I used to play football with a lad whose mum used to go out with one of Desmond Decker’s Aces 😂 Glad you enjoyed the video pal! Have a good weekend, Jack
An absolutely brilliant video, Jack and cheers for identifying me as a fellow sad bastard 😂 I accept your invitation to make a vid on this tag, so I shall get my thinking cap on and try not to cry too many buckets of tears in the process! As always, you showed some brilliant records here and thank you for the very kind words as regards my own collection 🙏 Best wishes, Christian
Good response Jack, and top marks for including 'For No-one'. Emmylou Harris did a cracking version of that, in fact she did 'Here There & Everywhere' as well. I enjoyed hearing the lyrics to that MGMT song, I really liked that first album of theirs but wasn't as impressed by the second so didn't pursue them after that. Also got a bit tired of hearing their songs in movies (although it was probably just one movie to be fair). 'Chelsea Girl' is an album I've yet to find/hear.
Thanks James. I never realised that Emmylou did a cover of For No One, but she kinda seems like one of those masters of interpreting other people's songs. I'll need to have a listen, love that song. The later MGMT stuff is really good too... they just went less commercial with their sound, which was kind of surprising considering how popular that first album was. I'm sure you'd like Chelsea Girl, the closest thing Nico did to those great Nico songs on the first VU album. I don't think she liked it though and hated all the strings that were added to the album. Sounds great to me!
“I feel well qualified” 😂 Arab Strap are excellent miserablists, so I reckon I’d like Aiden. MGMT is a great pick. Sad bastard lyrics hidden within great indie pop upbeat melodies. Warren Zevon, yep a sad bastard from the beginning to the end. Maybe angry sad. Morrissey is king of the newly formed sad bastard genre. Dolly surprisingly has a lot of sad songs considering her personality. Actually if Mozza’s the king Nico is the queen of gloom as you say. Brilliant stuff Jack. Cheers…Ben
Had to check out the Alexi Murdoch track with your comparison to Nick Drake. Very much like Nick Drake and immediately on the wants list. Shame it's a bit pricey, even for the reissue. Cheers for the recommendation Jack. Regards Nige
Hey Nigel, yep it's not easy to come by for a reasonable price. I waited for ages before pulling the trigger on my copy. Got a real bargain on it along with his second album, which is good too. Keep your eyes peeled and I'm sure one will pop up! Cheers for watching, Jack
I always thought Love Hurts was a Nazareth original. Not a Gram Parsons fan. Move to Paris and shoot some heroin sounds horrible. Choking on vomit, it did end horribly. It seems popular to crap on Morrissey but I love the Smiths. I picked Eleanor Rigby of Revolver. That is a dark song by Dolly Parton. I just can’t get past Dolly’s voice. Nico, a goddess of gloom.
"wearing a face that she keeps in a jar by the door" is such a creepy line! Eleanor Rigby is certainly a grim song. I quite like Dolly's voice on her earlier albums. It sounds purer and less of a parody of what she became in the late 70s and 80s. I think Everly Brothers were one of the first to perform Love Hurts, but I'm not sure.
This has got to be the best vinyl tag.
Yep, gets you thinking a bit and something a bit different too!

The Bay City Rollers lyric reading was pretty funny. I may have to take a stab at those lyrics on a video.
@@vinylrichie007 Pure poetry Richie!

It was a great vinyl tag, John. Really enjoyed doing it. Cheers, Jack
What a wonderful potpourri of misery! Great break down of For No One, also! I had a feeling you'd do this thread justice. Excellent work, Jack!
😂 A potpourri of misery!!! Nicely put, Mark. Cheers for watching and having faith in my love of heartache 💔
Excellent video Jack. The thumbnail made me laugh out loud! 😂
I wouldn’t even know where to begin making a video like this one, so I’m even more impressed!
Cheers from Morten
Cheers Morten, the thumbnail is taken from an old Irn Bru advert... just tweaked it to fit the tag!
@ Oh really? Ha ha, awesome 😄
Very cool choices, Jack. I made notes last week, and your video might propel me to actually finish the tag. Great Smiths pick!
It was a fun tag to do Brian! Look forward to your response!
This is only the second video in this tag that I’ve seen, but from the lyrics you’ve been sharing, I think you might have the saddest bastard selection!
ha ha! That would be a fine honour ... to be the saddest of sad bastards in the VC!

Cheers Christian, looking forward to seeing what you select!
Hopefully I’ll do the tag justice!
@TheVinylSanctuary No problem!

Many thanks, Ben! Embrace the sad side of the VC. Get on the sad bastard vinyl tag!
