I did plastering years ago, but this guy is a gem and a true gent, i only wished i met him and went with him for lessons in hints tips and tricks.. lovely guy and good video. Always something new to learn..
Great tip there Kirk - We used to use 'Plaster of Paris' and Hessian ... Lay the Hessian, pour the POP - it virtually self-levels - Goes rock-hard in Max 30 mins, letting you get on with the job in double-quick time 🤠
When I was plastering we gave The customer The option of overboarding with wraparound beads on 8 or 12mil boards keep away from original cornice about 5 to 10 mm from the floor after decorated looks like original
Fantastic video Kirk. I’ve seen a hundred lathe and plaster repairs from Kirk Giordano, but you’re the first to show one in England. Brilliant job and lovely gesture. I had an equally challenging upbringing and unfortunately my mum didn’t have anyone besides my nan to help, so lovely thing you’ve done. With regards to the van, it’s great when you feel the van pull. I kept having dpf issues with my 13 plate transit, on the end i had it mapped, its not 130bhp from 90 something, goes like a rocket in comparison to before, and is pretty fuel efficient
Used to do this years ago using plaster of paris on the lath sets in about 20 mins tops... clean out, support underneath, as in video...moisten lath and just pour in...also used to repair coving
Very intelligent plasterer mate the lad you have with you learning is a lucky lad he won’t go wrong iv been doing it 10 years and ya learning me stuff every time legend 💪
Kirk , you tuition is amazing , I havnt plastered for 20 yrs due to health , bur could you give me your option of a decent pre worn trowel , as am out of touch , keep it up Kirk your a boss man 💪👊
Very clever Kirk nice tip. Can you use half time in drywall adhesive i might do a test. But that is something inthink most of us would of just cut it out so another string to the bow an all that. 👍
Kirt ca. I watch ur live vidios even tho im a subscriber or do i have to join ur channel to watch lives iv asked this a few time now just that they never come up wen ur on live thanks too man love the vidios 💯👌👍
do you ever use the dirty water in the plaster mix makes it go off quite quick that's all people had to use in the old days before half time was available to use or a bit cement to
We have the same problem with an 1883 built house, but above our collapsing ceiling is the loft so I could do the same. The only thing is the bedroom ceiling has old wallpaper which I don't want to replace so it will only be plaster from above. However, I am based in Cheshire, Nr Northwich if you are interested in quoting for a job ?
My full house is lat and render just like the ceiling in the video, I had every wall and ceiling one coat skimmed years ago but the walls keep getting hair line cracks in them, is the only solution to go back to bare brick and start again or not?
Any advice how to stop renderlite taring/sagging when featheredging/ruling off. I’m I mixing the material to wet or should I mix it stiff and splash some water onto the material once it’s on the wall. Or I’m I applying it to thick I’m just seen unable to play around with the gear once it’s on the wall just taring Many thanks
They must of done mate, or maybe they put a load of screws through and just hoped for the best. Someone had definitely done something though as the finish below was pink not white
The PVC mains cabling routed through notches in the joists is against 17th/18th Edition regulations. What a horrible bodge job so you would need to recess either side of the notches and get substantial metal cover plates to stop nails or screws penetrating the cables and called 'basic mechanical protection" under regs.
Looking good fella, just subscribed as seen one of your vid thumbnails and saw the FS trade top and figured you where a local fella. Not sure if you ever get involved with fibrous work, but if you don't / get asked to where local fibrous firm. Anything moulding wise internal or external we do it. Plaster, cement, stone, fibreglass etc. 🤟🤟
I used to live in a 1920s house with lath and plaster ceilings. It was rented. The living room was about 14.5 x 10.5 feet with a nice little cornice. One Saturday morning I was getting ready for work and there was a massive bang and the whole central area of the ceiling had come down. Me and the landlord tried to work out what happened and came to the conclusion that the heating pipes had dried out the laths and the plaster then detached and the whole lot just fell. It was too much to patch. I wanted to keep the cornice so the landlord paid me to take down the ceiling and board it. I cut around the edge with an angle grinder, took down the ceiling and laths which just left the cornice. When the boards were up the plasterer came and used bonding to bring the ceiling down a few mm of the cornice. He then skimmed the whole ceiling. It actually turned out great and once painted you would never have known any work was done. I tried to buy the house off him but he wouldn’t sell and ended up buying somewhere else. 😂 Thanks for the video, I will feel a lot happier if I have to do any repairs to lath & plaster.
Kirk What's the mesh you are using? Is this your go to mesh for reinforcing the sub straight? Like on walls before skimming as well as lath and plaster repair? Thanks... and have a great xmas and new year.
Didn’t you have any problems with the ceiling going out of shape when you back filled between the joists mate ? Or is that the discolour on the ceiling were you’ve scraped it back
Went to look at a ceiling in a house in Bath while we were talking to the customer about how we were going to tackle it the whole thing came down, completely destroyed her living room.
Hi Kirk how you doing mate. My boss always puts cement in bonding so it goes off quicker, to skim on the same day. Could this cause an issue to the finish on the skim? I'm asking because I skim it nice and smooth, and we've had a couple where once it dries out, it looks a mess like somebody had been at it with a hammer and chisel 😂
I find every video I've watched informative and helpful. I will subscribe to the channel to continue watching your journey and know each sub makes a difference to all content creators. I Should have the keys in the next 2 days and the first thing I need to do is get the old woodchip shit off so I can inspect the condition of the walls. 🤞
Hi Kirk, lovely little video, a pleasure to watch. I'm interested in your mentoring course, but I'm not really looking to be inundated with work, I would just like it to be more regular, better paying and am happy with just a few days or even a couple days a week as have other things going on too. Might be a stupid question, but is that do able with your course or is it an all or nothing type thing? Cheers
Hey rich, yes mate of course. I only take the jobs I want and just tell the others I'm to busy... which I genuinely am anyway. But the answer to your question is yes, I just show the Method I've used to bring in lots of work constantly. You dechow much of it you want to do
@@Onthetrowel Brilliant mate, thank you. I'll be signing up soon, me Dad's in hospital just now so that's priority over everthing atm. Will sign up when things are settled. 👍
Well spotted. The ceiling had previously been patched up after the new joists. When I was cleaning out I noticed that about every 4th lath had been re fixed to the joists from below. I was happy that once i meshed it that it will be solid. If you ever wanted to do this without causing more damage below then you could lap the mesh up the inside of the joists and staple it before back plastering but I didn't think it necessary on this little area. Keen eye though mate 👌👍
You should have ripped all that lot down Kirk. I'm not a plasterer myself, but make sure you've got a roll of bin liners with you, and a drink. I've heard that sort of job described as "dusty".
well no the joiner wouldnt of chipped it off to make it look neater he would of chipped it off so bits of plaster bonding or whatever it is isnt hindering level of joist like, why not just wizz a square of the affected ceiling out and replasterboard rather than going takin up some geezas carpet or laminate floorin to get to the floor boards to then rip that up to then do that lil bit of a job
@@markrobson9894 aha no but i wouldnt think twice and id definatly wizz off the affected part of ceiling and board it going neat up against the cornice or leaving a couple inches from the cornice, filling on to top of some old laths then doin some mesh still doesnt seem as good of a job as just replasterboardin a section no meither

Thanks kirk, lath and plaster is some of the nastiest stuff to work with, we see them in brighton all the time. !! Tc mate.

top video kirk with spot on easy to follow advice. Your videos are awesome keep up the good work.

Mate, you are a clever get..hat off to yah😊
It's a miracle that it didn't all come down when the joiner chipped the plaster away from the laths.
Super vídeo learnt a lot 👌🙌
You was sharp there to work out what caused it . Most would of chopped all that off .

Love your banter, çracking Channel 👍
Really agree with the use of SBR brilliant adhesive lot of spreads won't use it cos of the price, ive used it many off time s when rendering
Like how you made sure the laths were bonded and strengthend not many builders or customers get what you're trying to do for the right reason
I knew that the guys that understand how lath and plaster work would understand. People like yourself mate

Impressed with that fix never seen it. Wouldnt the same fix be achieved by screwing the ceiling back up before skimming
Thanks
Thanks you very much mate

Not seen that done for years.
@5:10 I was just wondering why you would not punch through between the boards and have fresh plaster combing on both sides ?
Mentalist approach that 😉👍🏻
If they changed the joists how did they nail the laths back on .... they would have do it from underneath threw the plaster
They must of done mate, or maybe they put a load of screws through and just hoped for the best.
