This sh!t is so surreal as it take me back. As kids in the 1960s we played army like this because most of our fathers were in WW2 and these guys are doing the real thing we thought was just having fun.
8:11 The Église Notre-Dame de Saint-Lô is in the background, and both spires are still intact! This is matched with one historical source I found called "LAST PHASE OF THE BATTLE (15-20 JULY)" (focus on the WW2 Battle of Saint-Lô) stated on pages 118-119 that: "A forward observer of the 29th Division Artillery reconnoitered one of the spires in the church of Notre-Dame as an observation post. He decided upon its use and went to gather his crew. By the time he had returned, the enemy had shot both spires off the church." Furthermore, some French websites have pointed out similar things on this matter. Thus, if you guys found any website or media trying to claim that the church spires were destroyed by the Allied bombardments before the battle, please disregard them.
@@jaynedoe80 Wow, amazing legacy, thx for sharing. My Grandfathers and several Grand Uncles fought in N.Africa/Italy and Burma. I was just in Normandy this past June for the 80th Anniversary of DDay, will go to St. Lo on the next trip, didnt have a chance too see it this time. Is your Uncle who was killed in St. Lo buried in the American Normandy cemetery?
@@DDDD-pv7fw No, his parents, my grandparents, had his body brought back to the US and buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This is a big ask but during your next trip, while you're in St Lo, would you offer a prayer for my uncle and the others who lost their lives there. His name was Lt. Louis W. Bruck, Jr. And, my father was also in Burma with a cavalry regiment.
@@jaynedoe80 Yes I most definitely will !! I am also going there to honor the Maj. of St. Lo, Major Thomas D. Howie, who is buried at the American Normandy Cemetery, just above Omaha beach. The exact cemetery is in the opening scene of 'Saving Private Ryan". Thx for sharing the details of your Uncle, I have read his details online.
