Like you, i left my son in charge of my house in the UK when i left to live in Thailand. The first time i returned for a visit it was so upsetting to see how he neglected the place. So, I arranged for a cleaner to attend once a month - which my son pays for - and when i arrived back a few weeks ago, the place is clean and tidy.
Yeah, family living in your home country's residence aren't necessarily the best at keeping your property tidy and maintained. At the very least, hire lawncare service to come out once or twice a month.
I once went from Mexico City to London one way, as I got of the plane there was a customs officer waiting for me at the entrance of the planes door. He escorted me to the area where they search you. Went through everything and asked questions similar to what you were experiencing. I think they see the manifest on flights and pick out certain people doing irregular flight routes!
I generally have had a good experience when flying out of Japan. However, there was one trip where I must've been profiled as well. I was also returning to the U.S. from BKK. A woman accompanied by what appeared to be airport security personnel asked me a few questions. Most seemed to be regarding my carry on luggage: "Did you pack your own carry on?" "Did you leave your bag unattended at anytime while in the airport?" I think it's as you said...they're looking for passengers that may be carrying drugs. I always keep my carry on with me at all times from the time I leave my residence in Thailand till my destination. You don't want to be an unaware victim of a drug smuggler using you as a mule. I also always keep my carry on bags in the overhead compartment area that's within sight of where I sit on the plane. There's so many potential shady things that happen on a plane. I've heard of people having money and valuables stolen out of their stored carry on bags. Be vigilant during your travels at all times until you arrive at your final destination!
I flew back to Atlanta in May and my connecting boarding pass was labeled SSSS to notify TSA when I arrived. Seems like each time I return to the US TSA acts like I’m wrong living over in Thailand.
I know what you mean. As an Australian couple on holidays flying from Brisbane to LAX and then going on to Vancouver and on return, we had a similar situations at LAX and at other airports of being pulled out and being asked all of our travel arrangements and being swabbed. We were only passing through LAX after an overnight 12 hour flight, going through customs, changing terminals and then proceeding on. It happened so many times it was getting so repetitive that it seems like it's normal but it's frustrating. The first time through LAX, another passenger, I assume from a South American country, behind asked me if you need to take your shoes off at security scanning, the answer was, yes. Then he said, his shoe was permanently attached to his prosthetic leg. I was instantly bamboozled and I said, I assume so. I don't know what his outcome was as we were taken aside for further screening. But, he was gone when we were cleared. Who is the greater risk to public safety.
Greeny, same thing happened to my brother last December in Japan , he bought a condo in Phuket sight unseen over the summer last year and there’s a certain shaving cream he uses that he didn’t know if he’d be able to get in Thailand so he had six cans of it in his checked bag to stockpile at his new condo,…security brought him out onto the tarmac into this big van/bus type thing , they didn’t tell him what was going on they just would say “ come with us “ .. when he stepped into the van his luggage was sitting alone on a table , my brothers one of those guys whose never broken any law and probably never even got a speeding ticket , he said he was shittin his pants thinking he was getting set up , they asked him to open the bag , blah blah blah, long story short … they thought the shaving cream cans were bombs… sounds like they don’t mess around over there ,.. pretty annoying !
In Australia and with carry on luggage, most spray cans and liquids over 90 MLS will be confiscated at security. Forgot about some nail clippers and toothpaste on two trips, end of story, gone.
Congratulations on the grand baby, enjoy your time in the US, I know that you will be ready to get back home. Yes, coming from Thialand they are getting strict. The Middle East too
Funny how people think too much. The second search is randomly selected by the computer. This is all required by the US government. It always happens on the last leg to the US. The airlines through the Middle East do a second search of every passenger at the gate. They swab you and re-inspect your carry on bags. It is a pain but I guess it is better to be safe.
There's standard procedure like random searchers. However, profiling is very much alive and well. Having traveled a lot internationally, I've been profiled on a number of occasions for different reasons.
He heard the American accent, and thought he was in for a big pay-day in tips! Boy was he wrong! Us Brits would've given him a nice tip! 😄 Hope you have a great few weeks back home. Keep up the great content. 👍
This a not a joke Greeny. If you travel to Malaysia or Singapore and they catch you with illegal drugs, it's death penalty. Moral of the story, don't do drugs, period!
You could totally screw travelers by putting things in their bags...easy way to be evil beyond evil. I thought about this because I am American and own freedom bullets and thought about those people that accidentally had some in luggage. If you are government or just evil, you can set up people so easily. How many people get pickpocketed, now reverse that. Do you have full knowledge of your luggage 24/7 while travelling.
I was taken to a side and double searched on a layover in Europe. The officers actually explained me it was because of different regulations on how and what should I be searched about. So I had to be searched second time using US instructions.
There's a flight attendant who made a video about this. She said that you shouldn't really hang out near the gate too early before your flight because the gate agents will be looking for "prey" more or less. I bought a wooden fish statue in Thailand as a wrapped gift and in Japan NRT the scanner agent thought I was smuggling something because of how it showed up on x-ray (looked like a liquid). They let me go without incident. When I got to Boston, the damn TSA agent just unwrapped the whole thing like it was a gift for her. That statue got me pulled out of line every time on the way back.
I second that advice though. Don't hang out at your gate waiting for your flight. Wait for boarding to be announced before heading to your gate. Hanging around your gate in the US before boarding will often result in the GA telling you to put your bag in the sizer. Sometimes they get paid bonuses for catching oversized luggage. So if you hang around the gate and if your bag is slightly larger than the sizer you are probably going to have to cough up an extra hundred or so for checking the bag at the gate.
@@markalanl: This is the exact advice I have had too, and it's true! Wait until the scales/bag sizer is removed, just before they end boarding, and then walk up to the boarding gate and onto your flight. I also put a coat over the carry-on bag so they can't 'size-up' my luggage. It's worked for me so far. Obviously, every airport and airline do things slightly different.
Why didn't you do your physical/dental in Thailand? I couldn't recommend doing it in Thailand more, fantastic service/quality if you go to one of the top places and still much cheaper.
My American insurance pays. I paid nothing. I go in Thailand to. Actually was just at the dentist there about a month ago but may as well get my free cleaning while in the US
From what I've seen, your experience is common on flights from Japan to the US. I been to Japan several times. Every time coming home, there has been security asking people questions in the waiting area. In my experience, they talk to everyone. Then there is always a group of passengers get their electronics, etc swabbed. Only happened to me once. Staff was quick and friendly. I have flown from the US to other Asian countries transferring through Tokyo and I've only seen the extra security on the flights to the US.
You may be right. The last few times flying out of Narita to the U.S., I got asked a number of questions by their security in the waiting area. I just figured I was one of the unlucky ones that got randomly selected. I didn't encounter the same experience flying out of Doha, Frankfurt, or Hong Kong on my way back to the U.S.

I have been living overseas for over 40 years (now retired in Thailand). We single guys of all ages can be discriminated against at airports just because we are alone without a wife/ girlfriend or kids.... When I use to work in KSA , and land in the USA I would go through extra examination because of my visas from various Middle Eastern countries.
I remember a fellow teacher was hair tested in china and arrested on arrival. he was not in transit, but something to be remembered coming to asian countries. The laws and procedures constantly change so you have little protection and so many drug users in the states.
@@GreenyTravels had been to Thailand a couple of years earlier wanted to compare the 2 for retirement. Maybe they thought I was a perv. Nothing on my phone to worry about but they definitely seemed like they were looking for something.
Are they actually permitted to go through your phone without evidence of any kind against you for crime? Seems like a very serious invasion of privacy..what happens if you refuse?
We had the same thing coming back thru Narita a year ago, Lady same as you & we asked what's up? She said just additional security?? We do not look like drug folks either...Anyways..... Your home in the USA do you think you will always keep it? We do but often think we will maybe sell as we get a bit older because like you we realize maintenance adds up eventually

Come on now Greeny, coming from an ex cop, how many people did you make feel the same way over the years, You would expect if anyone had the understanding of someone trying to do their job it would be you.
Your experience in Tokyo reminds me of mine in Singapore in 2013. It was the first time that my fiance had been out of Thailand. Brand new passport with only an outward stamp in from Bangkok. Just a little spending money on her. She got pulled aside and taken to an "interview" room. From what she explained later it sounded like they did full on biometrics. The female immigration officer with a heavy accent who had not seen my passport asked me if I was Russian. Hell, she sounded more Russian than me. Then it dawned on me. She thought I was a Russian pimp and that we were on our way to Orchard Towers. Boy was I pissed.
Flying back into boston from bkk all they wanted was my phone and laptop. They kept me there for two hours and of course I did nothing wrong. I think they called it a digital media check or similar. I did nothing wrong. Good point. If you touch the weed then touch your stuff that could be a problem.
me and a few others got shaken down in Venezuela 1988, cops had to plant drugs on us until we gave in and paid them off about 300$ in a country where beer is 17cents and a gallon of gas was 4 cents
Probably because you're a single male traveler under age 60, from Thailand, with only carry-on luggage, going to a relatively high crime city (?) In USA? I have a similar profile and had my luggage searched upon return to Canada from Thailand by customs agents

Greeny living large. I recently had a bad security experience I decided to fly back the slow way from Bangkok with 3 days in Manila and 3 days in Honolulu. Flying into Manila no problem but flying out of Manila pal airlines made everyone go through a second security screening that took at least 30 minutes. I thought I was leaving North Korea instead of the Philippines.
@@GreenyTravels yes they are it is supposed to be out in the middle of nowhere when they should have just expanded the airport at Clark in Angeles city as they have all kinds of land available there and it is already an airport. Obviously somebody is going to make a lot of money on the site they have chosen.
I bet anything they were looking for residue from the hard stuff. Surely not cannabis. Lol Or more likely bomb making residue or chemicals. Love your videos, keep up the great work.
On a flight from Brisbane to Dubai, we passed through Singapore requiring all on board luggage to be removed from the plane. Instead of going to a secure international area as with Brisbane and many international airports, we had to go through security to continue our flight.
I used to travel Caribbean, Central America. I find Thailand much safer and way better infrastructure. No comparison. Way better place for a tropical destination
the red flag for the security lady was likely your arrival from a country that somewhat allows cannabis, it's highly illegal in Japan and security has probably caught other Americans with paraphernalia and/or actual substance. I have also read that security at Narita is contracted to private companies, so there is likely an incentive for them to buff up their numbers.
Enjoy your time at home. We’ll miss your vids but I guess we can go cold turkey for a while. A word of warning to your subscribers, if you’re packing $100 bills back to Thailand to exchange ( under $10,000), they are known to have a scent of cocaine on them as they are used by drug traffickers. The drug dogs on departure will sniff it and the customs guys will interview you. Has happened to me twice. Nothing illegal but may surprise you if you’re not expecting it.
Dreadful Japan, sucks to get picked out like that. Great update Greeny, get that landscaping done, next year kids may have another baby lol...or hire someone to knock it out for you.
They questioned you because your profile seemed suspicious. No stowed luggage, former cop, could be corrupt, “sort of” retired, living in Thailand. Cannabis is legal in Canada. I have never been stopped and questioned travelling through Tokyo on my way to/ from Thailand. So, it’s not that the drug is legal in Thailand, for now.
One time I flew from hong kong to okinawa and they hassled me for gold 😂😂😂. I was like wtf and they went through my luggage. I get it's annoying at the time, but to do a video about much later is says a lot to me. Hope you have a great trip back.
Good points. However the underlying reason for the video was to warn the pot heads, and there are a lot of them, to be careful on layovers where it’s not legal.
@@GreenyTravels Totally onboard with reminding people, especially considering someone got their passport out at Phuket immigration recently and their bag of cocaine came out as well. My opinion and experience only. It is up to the traveler to understand Japan can be strict, Singapore can be strict. That statue got me pulled out of line every time on the way back.
lol. The weirdest things.

Appreciate it.
Imagine this🤡 in Law Enforcement! No wonder no crimes were solved!
lol. 😂
That’s so weird. I got no problem with it only that she was asking too many questions so it got awkward
Greetings from Chicago!
Hey. Thank you.
Welcome to Va ! Va. Beach , Norfolk, Williamsburg, Blueridge, all beautiful places… Holler and I’ll buy you a beer (VB / ORF area)… Starting my world travels in a month, “see ya soon” on the other side of the pond
love to hear your take on Virginia and all the old military stuff, I am a fan of yours in Vancouver bc, we dont have any history
The Canadian Infantry & Armored divisions in WW2 played a Big Factor in the breakout from Normandy ! Not that I'm an expert but going from the 1st all the way to the 8th Division your country played a role. 🤔 Not giving your Veterans credit where credit is due !
Cool. I’ll try to make a vid there
I have been living overseas for over 40 years (now retired in Thailand). We single guys of all ages can be discriminated against at airports just because we are alone without a wife/ girlfriend or kids.... When I use to work in KSA , and land in the USA I would go through extra examination because of my visas from various Middle Eastern countries.
Me also, especially coming from just about any place in South America into Florida ... jeez ...
Yep, a lot of haters out there. They hate to see single guys living the dream overseas.
I remember a fellow teacher was hair tested in china and arrested on arrival. he was not in transit, but something to be remembered coming to asian countries. The laws and procedures constantly change so you have little protection and so many drug users in the states.
They test the hair root , medical shampoo can fix that problem
That’s pretty wild.
@@GreenyTravels it was supposedly a random test. hmmm

I didn't know canibis is so illegal in Japan. Maybe thats why they make such great products.
Remember Paul McCartney’s run in with Japanese authorities when they found some weed? That was quite a while ago, but it made a stir.
I’m pretty sure still illegal there
On arrests , devil meth is their highest arrests.
Had this happen to me in Detroit after a visit to the phillipines. They looked thru my phone. They were very serious. Kinda scary situation.
Oh boy. I’ve had women send me weird stuff on what’s app and the photos go on my photos in phone. I better check that
@@GreenyTravels had been to Thailand a couple of years earlier wanted to compare the 2 for retirement. Maybe they thought I was a perv. Nothing on my phone to worry about but they definitely seemed like they were looking for something.
Are they actually permitted to go through your phone without evidence of any kind against you for crime? Seems like a very serious invasion of privacy..what happens if you refuse?
Are you going to be back in Thailand mid September?
Yea. I’m pretty sure.
That’s gonna be a big decision when my kid moves out. It’s a duplex. 2 family place. I may just hire a property management company to deal with it
Man you are glad to get that Asia break. Keeps you from going Koo Koo bird like those expats that stay too long with no break.
I’ll be ready to go back. Trust me
Even some prescription meds are illegal in Japan like Ambien, which a lot of seniors take for sleep.
If they catch you with Viagra or Sildenafil its hard time in her Jail ; ) !
Hopefully they don’t check my going back. I got big bag from my pharmacy

Just came hime from Europe, Swiss Airlines, I too was flagged for secondary screening. Swabbed crazy....Im also retired LE....just doing their job.....
Exactly. Profiled. I really did t care too much because I have nothing to hide. Just a good video topic. Especially for all the pot heads in Thailand
Come on now Greeny, coming from an ex cop, how many people did you make feel the same way over the years, You would expect if anyone had the understanding of someone trying to do their job it would be you.
I needed something to complain about. lol. Really just a warning to all the potheads
Ahhh. The 4 floors of …. That’s crazy
Often the electronics are swabed for explosive residue.
Flying back into boston from bkk all they wanted was my phone and laptop. They kept me there for two hours and of course I did nothing wrong. I think they called it a digital media check or similar. I did nothing wrong.
Good point. If you touch the weed then touch your stuff that could be a problem.
Crazy
What is a digital media check? Are they actually legally permitted to check the phone and laptop off someone who has not been arrested?
me and a few others got shaken down in Venezuela 1988, cops had to plant drugs on us until we gave in and paid them off about 300$ in a country where beer is 17cents and a gallon of gas was 4 cents
Good place to avoid
Whilst Japan is probably my favorite country I have visited in Asia so far, I have flown in four times, and been thoroughly checked over every time.
Never had an issues when I’m actually going to Japan
Love Elton John, and thats my favorite song on Captain Fantastic album.... Possibly of all his songs. Yeah, nobody wants to hear me sing along...
Always carry tip money when traveling. You can afford to give a little love while traveling.
Rookie error. Didnt realize I spent my hundies
Probably because you're a single male traveler under age 60, from Thailand, with only carry-on luggage, going to a relatively high crime city (?) In USA? I have a similar profile and had my luggage searched upon return to Canada from Thailand by customs agents
Exactly. Profiled. I really did t care too much because I have nothing to hide. Just a good video topic. Especially for all the pot heads in Thailand
Greeny, you're such an old crank in this one. Babies are supposed to be annoying af. That's the beauty of life . . . especially when you can drop the babe in the hands of the parents and jet. Hilarious!

I fly though Dubai now. If they decide to swab, everyone on the flight gets swabbed.
Oh. I flew back on fly Dubai last time

Oh shit. Someone would have been going to jail
Nice Greeny! 😊
Thx. Biff
I've had that happen a few times. Don't take it personally
Same thing happened to us on our layover...makes me wonder what the heck they are profiling?
Who knows. I’m pretty sure I do t look all that suspicious but whatever
@@GreenyTravels Yep we both looked at each other...and said obviously the profile today was Rich looking middle aged white couple???? but like you said young Japanese immigration officer just wandering around and she picked us....after I thought about it I said maybe she is lazy and was picking people who actually didn't fit a profile that would cause her some inconvenience and paperwork 🙂
At the end of the day , they are just doing their job ,
Greeny, It is his job to carry your bag. Next time give him 200 tip.
Wish I had some change. Felt bad
Blame it on US special security requirements.
Probably
you make a great mistake Green, the US is a $h!t hole right now, I am stuck here for a while.
I’m out soon.
The USA is a very big country. If your city is a shit hole you can move to a city or town that’s not a shit hole…?
Greeny living large. I recently had a bad security experience I decided to fly back the slow way from Bangkok with 3 days in Manila and 3 days in Honolulu. Flying into Manila no problem but flying out of Manila pal airlines made everyone go through a second security screening that took at least 30 minutes. I thought I was leaving North Korea instead of the Philippines.
Phil’s the worst airports. I think Manila getting a new one soon
@@GreenyTravels yes they are it is supposed to be out in the middle of nowhere when they should have just expanded the airport at Clark in Angeles city as they have all kinds of land available there and it is already an airport. I bet anything they were looking for residue from the hard stuff. Surely not cannabis. Lol Or more likely bomb making residue or chemicals.
Love your videos, keep up the great work.

lol. I didn’t bring clothes back. Funny I just bought this shirt and a Michigan shirt at meijer yesterday
On a flight from Brisbane to Dubai, we passed through Singapore requiring all on board luggage to be removed from the plane. Instead of going to a secure international area as with Brisbane and many international airports, we had to go through security to continue our flight.
I have to say I'm surprised you chose such a far flung destination as Thailand, rather than your closest Countries?
I used to travel Caribbean, Central America. I find Thailand much safer and way better infrastructure. No comparison. Way better place for a tropical destination
the red flag for the security lady was likely your arrival from a country that somewhat allows cannabis, it's highly illegal in Japan and security has probably caught other Americans with paraphernalia and/or actual substance. I have also read that security at Narita is contracted to private companies, so there is likely an incentive for them to buff up their numbers.
The laws are softening actually. Medical cannabis is legal in Japan now. Also CBD is legal there now.
Interesting. Not smart to fly with that stuff.
I think all paper dollars will get hit on.
Dreadful Japan, sucks to get picked out like that. Great update Greeny, get that landscaping done, next year kids may have another baby lol...or hire someone to knock it out for you.
I got a guy that cuts the grass. Would just take my kid one day every 2 months to keep the rest up
Got swabbed for the Ka-Booooom Boooooom. They geo tracked you through Soi 6.
😂
I'm pretty sure the swabs are for bomb making material buddy.
Can be for that or drugs or both
They questioned you because your profile seemed suspicious.
I will show a bag on the way back. A bag filled with ranch dressing lol. Hopefully no issues
One time I flew from hong kong to okinawa and they hassled me for gold 😂😂😂. I was like wtf and they went through my luggage. Later I did some research and it turns out that organized crime smuggle hold from hong kong to japan to avoid the 10% tax or something like that. Japan can be a pain in the ass sometimes 😂😂😂😂
They are strict there.
Those you searched at airport are TSA employees working for USA Gov.recently had same incident.serched my hand bag and swabs body at Abu Dhabi airport flight to Chicago.i guest if your single man they are more suspicious

I think so.
Struggling to find what your problem was. They swabbed the contents of your bag. Oh the humanity. You had to look for an overhead locker? OK.You could have put it under your seat in most cases.
Storm in a teacup at best. You admit you got short with the woman, well if you want increased scrutiny do that. I get it's annoying at the time, but to do a video about much later is says a lot to me.
Hope you have a great trip back.
Good points. However the underlying reason for the video was to warn the pot heads, and there are a lot of them, to be careful on layovers where it’s not legal.

Totally onboard with reminding people, especially considering someone got their passport out at Phuket immigration recently and their bag of cocaine came out as well. My opinion and experience only. It is up to the traveler to understand Japan can be strict, Singapore can be strict. Some countries in Middle East have abilities that Us travelers believe infringe on our rights as a transient of their airport, Never clearing immigration to enter any other part of the country.
