They probably don't notice that they're living around garbage, the same way that a horder doesn't notice their home. What becomes normal - especially for kids growing up this way - is not understood the same way as you see it.
I've visited a few Arab countries and noticed that people would just throw trash on the ground, the store owners would sweep trash into the middle of the street. The building where I lived women would throw bags of garbage out of the windows. They must realize that Allah has made man responsible for the care of this earth.

Being poor is no excuse for simply dropping trash at your feet. I've seen places like this before and observed how they become trashy in real time. Where you see trashy streets like this, you know that too many people there have the habit of just letting go of refuse wherever they are standing. They will buy something, unwrap it and drop the packaging right where they stand. If you go to pick up the trash they've just dropped, they look at you as if you had just stepped out of a flying saucer.

This island seems to be filled with garbage. There doesn’t seem to any garbage infrastructure put in place. If that’s cleaned up, the place will look tidy.
Not exactly a five-star, luxury tourist destination, but who cares? There's probably very much else to see outside - and in addition - to this rather poor town. The island is surely endowed with amazing landscapes, beaches, etc. The children look movingly poor, but also happy and good-mannered. The one thing I really find disturbing is the large amount of plastic trash that seem to have been tossed about over some parts of the town
