1. Literally everything got a redesign in 4 and 5 with 343s takeover of the franchise and most weren't the biggest fan. Especially the Elites new mandibles and brute like body builds now. Oh yeah this is officially 343s first mainline Halo game btw. 2. The new gun you were using is called the Storm Rifle. It's not as good as sheild stripping as the Plasma rifle was unfortunately and it's just a reskined Assualt rifle.
The human rebellion referenced is 'The Insurrection' a event in Halo lore where a bunch of Outer colony people rebeled against the UNSC for a variety of reasons, for 30ish years the Outer Colonies and Inner Colonies of humanity fought in this civil war, the UNSC and Colonial Military Authority vs Various different rebel cells who had their own funding, allies, weapons and people from the UNSC sympathetic to their ideals which was freedom from the governament of Earth and the inner colonies, this civil war got so bad that billions died in terrorist nuking attacks and UNSC counter attacks that destroyed entire colonies, the first spartans were made [including SGT Johnson], then when the civil war was getting a little...apocalyptic for the human colonies they started with the spartan II program, then the Covenant showed up and you know the rest. honestly this is way complicated than this cause Halo lore really goes hard on the details, but if you want to read more than use Halopedia www.halopedia.org/Insurrection [semi-official wikipedia for halo approved by 343 industries]
