George Gruhn has always been my go-to for what I want to be when I grow up. Like so many legendary musicians, no words adequately describe this man behind the curtain and all his contributions to the music industry.

I bought my Gibson J-185 12 string at George Gruhn's store back in 2006, when the store was on Broadway. Billy Jackson was the sales guy, a really lovely guy and so patient with me. I can't wait to go back there, when I have some cash!!!

Wow, I had the privilege of sitting in almost that exact same seat when I was about 17. There was a kind gentleman who offered to give me tour of the upstairs of Gruhn's shop. He let me play a Goldtop Les Paul that probably costs more than most people's houses. Truly a memory I'll never forget.

You can sign up for inventory updates on Gruhns’ website. They come out at least a couple times a week. And speaking of “sinker” woods, there are a number available in their inventory,. Sounded fantastic!

Somehow i got ahold of Mr Gruhn's phone number a few years ago and called him occasionally to talk about guitars. I think i drove him nuts but i had a genuine interest in these old instruments and since then have played a few and educated myself much more on the subject. I might be able to hold his interest for more than 10 minutes now. Very good interview, i really want to check out his shop. The old guitars and repairing and restoring them are fascinating to me. Great interview and great instruments. Guitar 101.

Thanks Marty! I've learned a lot about playing guitar from your videos. I've also learned a lot about guitars from watching Mr. Gruhn. I traveled to Nashville for the first time this summer and had to stop in at Gruhn guitars. I had the good fortune to speak to Mr. Gruhn, who informed me that there was nor reason to tune down the strings of a guitar being put into storage. I found his perspective interesting, given that here's a man with all these vintage guitars, and he sees no use in tuning them down for storage.

Really interesting, Marty. The fascination from musical heritage helps playing even more special. I wonder if you've considered asking guys like George or Norm what their impression might be of other new guitars (e.g. Martin from sinker mahogany) which can sound in the ballpark of old classics but are more accessible financially. Speaking of heritage, I asked Heritage to make a Les Paul with KZ115 pickups from ThroBak, the winder for which has a special history and ownership thread including 1950's Gibson and Les Paul himself. It's astonishingly good. It seems the history, feel and tone (not to mention price!) of the classics are generating modern efforts to emulate. Just a thought. Sometimes we with more mortal bank accounts can at least head in the direction of historic tone and feel. Cheers!

I always wondered why Gibson made so many Les Paul's when everyone wants one like the '59. I thought the std. was the closest model to the '59. Good to hear that confirmed by an expert. Good show!
