  • Khashil, a simple yet profound dish made with red wheat, onions, and yogurt, carries deep cultural significance-one that now lives on in exile. Once a staple of home and community in Artsakh, it is now a cherished memory for those forced from their homeland.
In this short film, Alla Arzumanyan from Askeran takes us on a journey through her life and the vibrant legacy of her café, Mayrik (Mother), a cherished gathering place that once brought people together in her hometown. She shares the story of Khashil, the rituals and traditions tied to it, and the role of food in uniting communities.
Today, as no Armenians remain in Artsakh after Azerbaijan’s full occupation, dishes like Khashil are more than just food-they are a connection to a homeland that was taken but will never be forgotten. Through memory and tradition, its essence endures.
