I've been knitting since last summer and its amazing! its cheap to start, easy to start, lots to learn, creative, relaxing, mobile. It's very good for mental health too as it keeps the neurons regenerating in the same way crosswords or chess does. I also get a wonderful sense of pride making things for people, and a sense of achievement when projects come together! every one should knit 😊

I like it too, rachel; i just learned the start of last month. 'I' had never knitted before. I've started crocheting a few times in my life, but mostly would stop because i got confused where the last stitch was on a row and would be unsure when turning....One of the things i like about knitting is the stitches are easy to see/identify. But, yeh, i am liking it too! ...i also have discovered i like variegated yarn. it's fun watching the next color come up :) i see this is four yrs ago you commented. Are you still knitting?

I am an extremely fast crocheter and I just started knitting. Because I am used to holding my hook in my right hand and yarn in my left, it feels extremely awkward to knit the regular way. Your video has helped me tremendously because I can leave the yarn in my left hand. Sorry about all the unpleasant comments. People truly have no filter on the Internet. Again, thank you hon.

wow, I'm the exact same. I've been crocheting for years and when I recently started knitting I had to force myself to hold my yarn the regular way. After being introduced to this, I've been knitting almost same speed as crochet

Mariel Ortiz-Beliard I am more experienced of crochet and knitting. I have crocheted a hat less than 1 hour. I have started crocheting since 5 years old. I have learnt how to knitting since 8 years old. I have barely knitted anything. My project of knitting was chunky sweater in nearly one month. I was too slow to knit the chunky sweater. But hopefully, in one day I can knit faster.

this is how I began knitting for the same reason. I crocheted for years and when I finally learned to knit I was always fighting the needles until I just work them like I do when I crochet. it was like an immediate thing for my hands. they just got it lol I ask find it easier to knit through the back loop as my normal knit stitch.

RJ Knits Hello! I appreciate that you want to teach others to knit and it´s a nice video, but you really don´t call it continental. You call it speed knitting and speed purling!! I am not at all a purist and not that good at knitting. I often look at videos to learn more but I know that women have known this technique for a long time. For example in the north of Europe where I come from. I think all those women should be appreciated for their work, that´s all I´m saying.

    • @ladyblackheart1936
      @ladyblackheart1936 9 років тому +10

Yeah because everyone knows that using different terms means you don't appreciate the technique. It's knitting for the love of Mike, not a peace treaty.

Lady Blackheart My point is that RJ Knits claims he calls it continental in the video, look at the comment above, but he doesn´t. i love knitting, You love knitting so let´s stop bickering about it.

An extremely helpful demonstration. Whatever anyone wants to call it, it’s a much faster method than the English way I had been taught. You slowed it down to a perfect speed showing what goes where and when. I’m going to give it a go.
    Thanks so much!!

Thank you for posting this video! I am a continental knitter, and I had tried to learn Norwegian purling, but couldn't get it. Watching you demonstrate it, I suddenly (finally) understood. I could finally grasp the mechanics behind it (I'm a weirdo---I have trouble learning something like this if I can't see the "why it works", in addition to the "how to"). I have a good deal of practicing to do before I get the tension consistent, but it's coming along. Thanks again!

Hi Ryan. I just started knitting and I wanted to learn continental because it seems like less impact on my hands down the road. Your video is the first video that showed a grip that didn't have me doing weird contortions of the left hand when doing the purl stitch. It took me a little bit to really understand where the yarn was going, but thanks for showing your technique! I like that I don't have to pull the yarn down across the needle with my index finger or thumb on the purl the way some other videos show. This helped me a lot.

Oh my thank you so so much. My German grandmother taught me to knit when I was a child but only the knit stitch. Sadly she passed away before she taught me the purl stitch. As a result my purl stitch has always been ridiculous. I have tried your purl stitich and it is working for me. I already hold my working yarn with my left hand thanks to my grandmother and now I am able to add a matching elegant purl stitch to my knit stitch thanks to you.

I had no idea this method of purling even existed much less widely used in Europe. I am floored at how easy its made continental purling. But now I'm looking at all the "this isn't speed knitting" comments and I guess I just have so much more to learn! XD

  • @thomasjuenemann3523

Holy crap! I knew that there was a better way to do this! Coming from crochet, I innately started doing the knit stitch this way. The purl stitch kept slowing me down because I couldn't keep the yarn under the same tension without moving my left fingers down/towards me. Now it all makes sense! Thank you!

OMG! Thank you so much. I can't tell you how many videos I've watched to learn to knit. I'm a quilter and crocheter. I could not get the purl down at all. Continental knitting no problem. The purls took so long and I had to use my whole left hand to do it. Thank you thank you!!

I totally agree with you on this type of knitting, I am a crocheter and this technique saved the day for me I almost gave up.. It is continental knitting! I don't agree with the purl stitch being faster the way you do it here, and it is not continental style either; not sure what it is called but not faster for sure especially to this new knitter! Thanks so much for your help and a different way to do something that works!

Brilliant. At last I've got the hang of it! All the other tutorials I have found online involve wrapping yarn around the little finger (you call it the pinkie) and this one showed me that this just isn't necessary. Am zooming ahead now and will always knit this way! Thank you.

I never saw this before, I'm hoping I can use it soon- I don't give a sh!t what it's called, not called, you could have called it Edna, why does anyone care? It's a nice tutorial, you explain it well - I taught myself to knit about 20 years ago using one of those "learn to knit" kits, and never ventured out of that comfort zone. Now I'm trying to learn a few new things - this is fun, it looks like it would make ribbed stitches, the seed stitch, and others that go back & forth between K & P easier, less hassle. I'm finding that my fingers understand that Purl st better than my mind.

pamelam4 I think folks are just thrown-off by the misleading title. Just for future reference... this IS traditional knitting, commonly known as "continental style". What you may be referring to is English style, which is equally popular. There are others as well. Over the millenia, different styles and techniques have developed in different regions across the world.

    • @jaybeecee1949
      @jaybeecee1949 5 років тому +2

It depends on what you mean by “traditional”. There is absolutely nothing new in this video. Bazillions of people have knit this way forever. There are also many other variations, some of which are even more efficient. Young Ryan should do his homework before he plays expert. That’s not mean, just true.

You may want to look up lever knitting instead (also called Irish cottage or pit knitting), I haven't tried it myself yet but from what I've read it's what production knitters use. Some knitters on UA-cam say it lessens risk for strain injuries thus allowing you to knit for a longer time. I'm a beginner knitter, knitting with the continental style in the round, wanting to knit more efficiently so I can start all the fun knitting projects in a timely manner. Bonus tip: look up knitlynpics (part of the name of a video on UA-cam), her knitting technique seems really good to me.

  • @rosalenewalters8522

Many thanks for the video, much appreciated as all the ones on continental knitting I have see so far have the first finger of the left hand in the air. I know many of my friends crochet that way, but it is something I have never been able to do. I'm getting a tad long in the tooth now, but I love to learn new skills. I still struggle with the purl stitch, but as today was my first attempt, I dare say I will get the hang of it - eventually!!! I should be able to knit socks so much quicker, I reckon I knit socks for England as I have done so many pairs over the years. Knitting in the round means that 90% is worked in the knit stitch, only the welt and heel to worry about. ;)

Thank you very much for this, I started knitting a few days ago and was still having a lot of trouble with the right handed method because I had been crocheting while holding the yarn in the left hand which is so much easier. Especially with purling, this is much improved. However, would you mind showing how you begin and end a row when purling? I can't figure out where to wrap the yarn the first time, and my last stich always ends up weird and huge.

The language of knitting varies: Also known as continental knit, and norwegian purling, n-purling good for occasional purl stitch in a pattern otherwise risk of overuse injury. Always ask is this ergonomic for my hands/body, and speed is good for high production/sellers, but let's not take the leisure time knitters out of consideration, not ever project is a rush job is it?. Speed without good technique may increase risk of injury, use precaution and support gloves, try the square needles and light weight ...after 40 plus years I finally got a pair of higher end needles and can feel the difference immediately, stainless steel and light Chiagoos and Bamboo and light plastic. Good posture is a must and good lighting. I am searching for a knitting belt maker/supplier in USA to really alleviate stress and increase speed.

    "vocabulary's just vocabulary"
I think the point is that the title is misleading, so the video is disappointing if you're one of the many, many people who already knits like this. But that's been pointed out enough.
What I find particularly odd, though, is your "speed purl", because the Norwegian purl is certainly clever, interesting and comfortable to work, but I would hardly characterise it as fast. Combination style purling goes a lot faster and is way simpler - wouldn't that make a better "speed purl"?

If you REALLY want to learn how to knit faster - looking into taking Stephanie Pearl McPhee's (The Yarn Harlot) class - Knitting for Speed and Efficiency. It is an amazing class - and she can knit probably closer to 100+ stiches per minute! She often teaches at yarn conventions. It is worth looking into! I also learned a lot about the history of knitting.

That is the weirdest purl I've ever seen. Is there an advantage to using whatever technique that is rather than bringing the yarn to the front of the work?

LOL , Jo. I agree, just bring the yarn to the front to purl. Simple.

When I'm speed knitting I always stab the yarn and it either looks wierd when I pull it out, or I dont notice like usual and my project gets ruined.

i really like this, and i think its very useful when doing say, the seed stitch or something similar to that. im currently making a scarf with knitting and purling, so i came to this video for help. I understand it, and i plan to use it, but when i purl like youve showed, my stitches are very loose and big- which is creating gaps in my work that i dont want. does this tension issue go away with practice, or does it remain this way always? I will keep practicing, hopefully something changes. thank you!

Taught myself to knit this way many years ago...I didn't know this was a thing though.

I find that purling this way is easier than the way I purl (I already continental knit), but the tension is much looser this way. How do you handle tension issues?

    Agree with Ditmar2007
This is the ordinary Scandinavian way to knit. Only we do it more smooth without so many movements. You look like me knitting at the age of 10 before I got the routine.

Hi! My dad taught me to knit English style. His mum was deaf and knitted for an income. Dad had to help her to keep up with the orders.

I've been trying this method and really like it! Thank you for this video!
However, I'm having issues with my stitches being a little tight? especially now that I've added in purling. Anyone have recommendations on what I'm doing wrong?

This style is also called Continental or German Style knitting if anyone is interested in learning more.

Thank you RJ Knits for sharing your awesome techniques! I have been continental knitting for about two years now and am diving into new techniques on how to purl continental. This blew my mind and I am practicing this new technique to see if it will fit my knitting style! thank you very much again!

I can't tell if my tension was too tight doing English throwing style or if I'm doing something wrong when I purl using this technique. My stitches are so loose and its throwing off my gauge. I don't want to change back to English because using this technique took out almost all the shoulder pain I was feeling.

***** Try to keep you tension as even as possible. With this purling method, there's a stronger "pulling" motion when you first dip into the stitch, so if you pull a little too far it can make everything too loose in areas.
Anyway. That probably didn't help at all! Giving knitting pointers via comments is nearly impossible. But good luck!!

I used to use continental method but it caused increased arthritis pain. I discovered Portuguese Knitting method and find it faster. It has less movement of my fingers so less pain!

To add to my previous comment... When you master what you can do, try knitting without changing hands. That's fun!

Napuke it is the Norwegian purl. I think so too complicated and to
      Much time consuming.

If you're not big on knitting or you work with moving your yarn a lot with fingers it may not be for you. But I literally can't use any other metod right now, I'm so used to Norwegian purling that my brain refuses to learn other ways of holding yarn xd

I only crochet but I'd like to get into knitting, is this a good style to learn with or should I go with something else?

    • @longtailedmonkey
      @longtailedmonkey 9 років тому

I think you can try this first cause the concept is the same as crochet except that the knitting needle doesn't have a hook so you have to experiment a little to get the angle right. If the tension is too tight, it might be hard to pick up the yarn.
But if it's difficult, then I suggest you try holding the yarn on your right hand first. I started off that way and knitted the basic stitches slowly. I've only learned to use my left hand now that I'm doing a double stitch.
All the best! :D :D Happy Knitting!

Thanks for the tutorial. I've never been able to get it. I do have a question though. As a general rule, I never flip my work; rather I just knit/purl backwards. Do you have any tips for speed knitting while switching hands?
