Good stuff. Finallly someone that points out the input on the AM antenna. For me this was the most important part as I love to play with broadcast AM late at night and build external antenna. Many amateur radios only have external options for SW and FM. For the life of me, I don't know why that all the newer versions of this radio doesn't have the rotateable AM antenna. grrrr

Great video! I like how you have your switch set up with your sdr and your grundig. I just bought a cheap workman 3 way switch to try something similar. I want to set mine up so my 250' long wire antenna can be used with my grundig 750, pl660, and my sdr. Thanks for making these videos.

30Oct2020 Hi, I want to thank you very much for your explanation of specific knowledge to a ole paradog that's just getting started in the hobby. I recently purchased the Eton 750 n while it looks n abilities is not yet been achieved. Most likely due to my lack of knowledge with comms. An I am subscribing to your channel.
My radio doesn't do much otherthan embarrassing me everytime my nasty wife walks into my shop. Anyhow, if I get a FM antenna will that enable myself to pickup FM stereo? Also I'd like the same setup you shown in this video n would think the splinter would allow me to go from FM to SW. If I understand what you stated perhaps? Where do I get that G5RV n the cables n such? Would a loop antenna be a wise choice or would it just interfere with your setup? As I'd probably say a 3 to 1 splinter is another option. But I don't honestly know.
I do have a metal roof on both the house n shop where I have my 750 located. Having a metal roof effect my comms abilities? Dumb questions I know, but I definitely don't know much in this area of interest. Thanks again n hope you reply if you have time. Thanks Ty

Thanks for your questions. The antenna does not have an effect on whether your can received FM stereo as long as you can receive the stations with the built-in antenna. Yes, a splitter would allow to have two antennas and easily switch between the. One for FM and one for SW. MFJ carries the G5RV antenna. Do a Google search for them. As loop antenna is a good choice for SW but not FM. See my videos on my loop antenna. Yes, a metal roof could effect your reception. It is best to have an outside antenna away from the metal roof and use coax cable to bring the signal into your shack. Have a great day.

One thing you may want to mention Tom that new folks may not know getting in to shortwave from scratch with the Grundig 750 that hooking up a normal UHF/VHF antenna that a TV uses is not the same as using an antenna specifically made for Shortwave use.
I tried this once with the 750 since it was a coaxial cable and basically assumed it would act like a sort of big wire antenna and found it useless :P
Also you may want to mention there are several different types of antennas out there as while still new and wondering what antenna to buy , there were so many options of so called tuned antennas or specialized antennas that were for tuning in certain frequencies the best they could and then there are antennas that are basic generalized antennas that pick up a wide range of frequencies that the first time listener may want if they really want to start a sort of shack for best reception and most bang for the buck.
Also you may want to mention most antennas are built for receiving with no problems I believe and when you get in to transmitting signals you have to make sure the antenna your using is built for it since it will have power going to it I believe when it sends out signals.
Feel free to post a reply to me with the proper terms if I am using the wrong terms and fix anything wrong or correct me if I am wrong since like that person that asked the question , I am still a neophyte and still learning but new guys coming to the field for the first time that know nothing usually never get that stuff mentioned to them when first starting out and may not know all that stuff unless they start diving in the field more and more and learn it over time since shortwave is not like AM/FM radio that most people are used too.
Also due to propagation a signal that may be heard clear as a bell an hour ago when tuned in an hour later or even 15 minutes later can be unlistenable due to how shortwave works and just because you buy a nice shortwave radio and get it home and tune the channel for the first time or scan it if you have ATA and find nothing but static does not mean that shortwave is dead like many people think when they get that first radio and watch these videos you and others make and think reception is so easy and can't wait to pick up something and think the radio is defective due to bad conditions for them that may change in 1 hour, 1 day, or 1 week later to stations booming in with just the whip antenna that came with the radio.
Don't be afraid to ask questions either as asking them is how you learn and that means even questions you may think is stupid :) Most Shortwave people go out of their way to help new people in to the hobby so they usually wont have that superior way of talking down to folks you get in other areas when you ask questions and they try to make you feel small by acting like you should know something already.
Yep I am still new so I remember all the stuff above being new to me when I picked Tom's brain over and over in messages to him since finding his channel and others that he mentions over time that he follows that helps out shortwave newbies like me and others :D

If you connect the SW antenna to the BNC connector with coax, I presume the coax shield is supposed to be grounded at building wall. If the coax is not grounded at the wall, can one make up for that by grounding the radio chassis with the lower black snap connector?

I have the Eton 750, and when I plug an antenna into the rotating antenna for LW/MW the sound goes dead. I have tried both stereo and mono plugs. This is with a simple wire antenna.
Do I need a different antenna, or do I have an issue? Not sure I need a antenna as everything I listen to is local, but wondering if I have a problem.

Unfortunately they have become quite popular and therefore the price has gone up 50% or more. In the summer Amazon put a lot of things on sale and you can catch a great deal. Mine was purchased for me by someone who caught a great sale. As someone pointed out, there newer ones are sold by Eton and some have different model numbers.

Where can i find replacement potentiometers (value unknown) for the Squelch, RF gain and the SB BFO controls? The radio is a Eton Grundig Satellit 750 which is the same as Tecsun 2000. Anyone with the schematic diagram please can you tell me the values or where i can buy the 3 pot module board. The controls are broken to the extreme that i can't measure the R values . Thank you so much !

Can I just use a long piece of coax as antenna ?

    • @hamrad88
      @hamrad88  3 роки тому

Since coax is shielded, just a piece of wire connect is better. Then use coax to bring the signal into your shack and ground the shield of the coax to the radio or ground. This way the single wire can pickup the signals outside and the coax will prevent the signal in your shack from cause noise on the signal you want.
