- We’ve been offering knitting patterns for Smart Doll since 2019 (prior to that, our other shop offered patterns for 1/6 scale dolls since 2016). Over the years we have received questions from buyers, especially those new to knitting about the hobby. We, until now, have been answering them one on one, but realized that this might be a better option and we could go more in depth with examples and visuals.
Geared to those who have never knit in scale before; we take you step by step thru the process, from pattern to finished garment. But this is not just for beginners! We have plenty of tips, tricks and helpful hints for more experienced and advanced makers as well, especially those looking to “miniaturize” their work.
If you would like to replay any section of this tutorial, we have included chapter breaks and times:

Some options for very small knitting needles (I use DP or double point as if they are straight, since they come in much smalle sizes).

Hi, I just wanted to say that, as a knitter who's just starting to dip her toes into the world of knitting for Smart Dolls, I spent my entire first viewing of this video amusing my best friend (aka the person who sent me spiraling into my Smart Doll hobby) by going "yes, yep, uh-huh, this is matching up with my experiences knitting socks. She does, indeed, actually know what she's talking about. Which is a LOVELY surprise on the internet from a non-knitting/crochet focused channel!" I just bought my first patterns from you (the winter mega pack and the basic raglan cardigan patterns), and I'm really looking forward to trying them! Thank you for the advice on how to start knitting to scale, because while I've been knitting for years and have done socks (and thus worked with the size 2.00 mm/2.25 mm needles and fingering weight yarn), the rules change a lot when going for realistic looking scale. It is REALLY nice to have some guidance as I try to figure out this fascinating intersection of one of my oldest hobbies and my newest!
Thank you for your comment - we live for engagement! We hope to do more videos about these topics.
I have done a lot of knitting for dolls, from SD size BJDs all the way down to Pukipuki size. I like to use circular needles the best you can find them all the way down to .7mm, to eliminate seams where possible using the magic loop technique.I like to use Venne cotton which is the thickness of topstitching thread, also Sulky Petite embroidery thread these two brands come in an endless variety of colors and give a lovely result.
Magic loop is a great way to knit in the round! But it can be a hard skill for a new beginning knitter to master. We chose this method so that someone who is new to the hobby can still make a nice item for their doll with basic stitches and techniques and be able to customize the item easily.
I think that mercerized is pronounced; Mer-sir-ized not mer-cure-ized. other than that i really found this video entertaining and educational. I am inspired to try one of your patters. I think I will try the Bell Sleeve Tunic. So glad I saw this in the Smart Doll Makers Facebook group
Thank you for the correction! The bell sleeve tunic is my favorite - not sure why.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍
Do you know how to do this for crochet? My mom crochet 🧶 and we are trying to figure out how to create for the SmartDoll.
I am more of a knitter - but some of the tips will work for crochet as well. Thinner fiber, smaller hook. For crochet, I DO notice that moving down a stitch also helps - for example using a single crochet where you would normally use a double crochet - we have a few crochet patterns at www.kitnkatshop.com
I would also highly recommend Octopudding's channel here on UA-cam. She DOES crochet for dolls and has some great tutorials, follow along patterns, etc.
@@KitnKatShop I’m looking for a sock needle set like you showed what are they called exactly and what are the gage ranges included?
@@kelleypopelar3162 they are double pointed needles - sizes 1.75mm thru 3.0mm will be used most often. I give diameter because European and US "sizes" differ and some of the ones made in China are mislabeled so you want to check with a guage (the white card) and a good ruler. If you buy a single size - it is usually 4-5 on that size.
I've seen people crochet with perle cotton or even sewing thread!
