greetings from greece bro...i saw plenty of reactions from different americans and i have to clarify some things about european fans...yes you have a point that european basketball is not as good as the nba i mean the nba teams are a league of their own...but something americans dont understand about european fans and especially football fans is that to us our teams symbolise something more than a team or a sport...it symbolizes religion or different society classes like the poor and wealthy it symbolises the resistance against the goverments oppression or police oppression...it symbolises the ppls roots and so many things ...for example the barcelona fans hate real madrid fans cause real was the dictators francos team and barca is the pride of catalonia who still fight for their indepedence ...the celtic fans are catholics and rangers fans are protestants and so on so on ....every team has a different backround and different root and thats why they are so passionate about them...i bet if you ask 100 ultras what their team means to them 100 of them will reply u their life or way of life...imagine if there was a team in america that symbolised the struggle of african americans the racism they received from their fellow citizens and still experiencing the profiling etc etc...imagine their supporters..this is what our teams means to us we dont care about the class of the team or how good they are we love the team for what it means to us...you can say that this hours in the stadiums or courts is our personal expression of freedom...sorry for the long post or my english mistakes i hope i have shed some light why we are behaving like this ...take care brother my regards from greece

European basketball games include defense in them though... I would not say the NBA is necessarily a better league since you have lost in multiple occasions to smaller European countries. ( example, the "dream team" with lebron, melo and other big names losing to Greece in 2004)
To the greeks fanatical fans soccer or basketball team is an extention of their ego. So when the team wins, they win , if the team loses, they lose if the team loses badly they get ridiculed. Thus u get this atmosphere its a "do or die" thing especially if the other team is from your hometown or a team with great rivalry!!!
These team have legendary rivalry. If an enemy team plays in OUR arena, fans' job are to make them feel intimidated and unwelcome. I mean some of the chanting is brutally offensive and full of swearing, you don't even want to know what they are saying.
