मध्यप्रदेश के उज्जैन में महाकाल मंदिर भगवान शिव के 12 ज्योर्तिलिंगों में शामिल है। यहां श्रद्धालु दूर-दूर से भगवान शिव की पूजा और दर्शनों के लिए आते हैं। मंदिर से संबंधित कई रहस्य है, जिसकी वजह से यह मंदिर आस्था का केंद्र बना हुआ है। धार्मिक मान्यता के अनुसार, भगवान महाकाल के दर्शन करने इंसान का जीवन-मृत्यु का चक्र खत्म हो जाता है और मृत्यु के बाद मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है।
पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, प्राचीन समय में उज्जैन में दूषण नामक के राक्षस ने तबाही मचा रखी थी। ऐसे में लोगों में देवों के देव महादेव से राक्षस के प्रकोप को दूर करने के लिए प्रार्थना की। इसके बाद भगवान शिव ने दूषण का वध कर लोगों की अपील पर उज्जैन में ही महाकाल के रूप में वास कर लिया। धार्मिक मान्यता है कि यहां भगवान शिव ने दूषण के भस्म से अपना श्रृंगार किया था। इसलिए वर्तमान में भी महादेव का भस्म से श्रृंगार किया जाता है। आपकी जानकारी के लिए बता दें कि यह एक ऐसा महाकाल मंदिर है, जहां भगवान महाकाल की दिन में 6 बार आरती की जाती है।

After this, Lord Shiva killed Dushan and on the appeal of the people, lived in Ujjain as Mahakal. There is a religious belief that here Lord Shiva adorned himself with the ashes of Dushan. Therefore, even today Mahadev is adorned with ashes. For your information, let us tell you that this is such a Mahakal temple, where the aarti of Lord Mahakal is performed 6 times a day.
