    I've actually been using Tabletop simulator on steam for D&D & other table top roleplaying games for a couple years now and it's always served me well.

    I’ve been playing RPGs with my college buddies for about a decade now. I agree with most/all you’ve put forward here. Our sessions are shorter (1-1.5hrs), we don’t do long set ups, combats are streamlined, we use real dice (aaps are just slower), we have video on unless the connection is slow/buggy. We however don’t use a VTT as we’re all old school theatre of the mind, although we’ll use various maps and visual tools when the occasion requires it.

    Would definitely love a video of setup tips. Our online play is pretty much limited to a grid with minimal icons, a digital dice roller, and a voice chat

    You can also use the text chat to "interrupt" or have players ask to speak

    Thank you for the advice! I'm going to share this with my DM, so we can try it out. Since I moved to a different city, I've been in an online game, but I always seem to zone out during the sessions, waiting for it to end. I really want to play D&D, but there aren't any groups in my area, so online is kindof my only choice. But I always get so distracted when playing online! So thanks again for these tips. I appreciate you :D

      I hope it helps!! As a player I find that taking copious notes with a pen and paper helps me as well. It gives me something to do while others are talking, but forces me to stay attentive so I know what to write. And then you also get to be a hero when someone says "what was that thing that person told us to do five sessions ago??"

    • @katrinasaarnits574

      @@powerwordspill So far I've been trying to take in-character notes on my computer, but then the styling options take all my attention and I forget to listen to what others are saying. I really should use pen and paper, possibly a separate notebook just for that. You keep spilling good advice (pun intended) :D

      Having a clean play area is important, I try to have my computer desk area clear of anything that can be distracting, and i make sure i get that drink or snack before we play.

      @@katrinasaarnits574 @dungeoncraft loves sharing tiny notebooks with his offline players that DM reviews or even keeps after sessions, whilst many people are obsessed with digital markdown / zettlelkasten notetaking - there's almost no style options and but wikipedia-like internal links and stuff, so notes can be organised.

    Btw, I love how you skip those 10-minute markers and make the video length as long as it needs to be. Thanks!"

      Thank you! I do have some music in there it's just really low so it doesn't compete with my voice, but it sounds different on different speakers/headphones. I'll try playing with the balance some more, thank you!

    Some thoughts on VTT from a newbie GM with newbie Players, due to location only playing online, 2 of my players in never meet:
    For my group VTT is a double edged sword. I feel like my players directly switch from D&D to a "computer game" mindset, moving their tokens (also using owlbear rodeo) pixel by pixel to get line of sight, asking about doodads on the map, counting pixels for distances and so on. It seams I can partially counteract this by describing a room first before removing the fog of war and I'm trying to avoid to artistic maps and stick to simpler maps e.g. made with dungeonscawl.

    Owl Bear Rodeo is great! Do you use the updated one or the original 1.0?

    • @powerwordspill
      @powerwordspill  Рік тому

      We've still been using 1.0, but the new one looks really cool! I really like the simplicity of 1.0, but tbh I just haven't taken the time to properly look at the new one.

      @teathomas Рік тому

      @@powerwordspill I absolutely love 1.0 but the new one looks more complex than what I need, since everything just works in 1.0. Maybe I’m just being stubborn though, not wanting to change.

      @EPICOfficialTeam Рік тому +1

      2.0 definitely felt like it was going to be to in depth like Roll20 but after using it for a few sessions I find that in game it runs just as smooth as 1.0. It’s just the prep that’s a little bit longer. My favorite features in 2.0 is the updated ruler with character movement, and the attachment system for anything from conditions, mounts, to auras.

    • @teathomas
      @teathomas Рік тому +1

      @@EPICOfficialTeam I’m definitely interested in the attachment system, it’s what I’m gonna be checking out next. I’ve always hoped for a way to place a map down and move it around the tabletop with everything on it staying in place. If not, oh well.
