    The Kemmu Restoration and the subsequent Nanboku-cho period are two of my favorite eras of Japanese history. I know it like the back of my hand and never get tired of hearing, reading or writing about it. Much appreciated my brother 🤜🏾🤛🏻

    I noticed that, in Japanese pop culture, there are a lot of stories featuring puppet rulers being controlled by the military. While in the west, we tend to have a lot of stories about absolute monarchs. It makes sense that this idea would be ingrained into Japanese culture considering the Emperor has been a figurehead for the majority of the last thousand years.

    • @socrateos
      @socrateos 4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, that is such an important fact to understand about Japanese political history. But it is equally important to realize that "figureheads" (the imperial court) have never been totally destroyed in Japan, unlike in many other countries in both the East and the West. Why did neither Ashikaga, Oda Nobunaga, nor any other shogun end the imperial court? It even survived the American occupation forces after WWII. The imperial court still plays a significant role in society despite its lack of political power.

      @@socrateos I suppose it says a lot about Japan being a nation that really cherishes its traditions. Not to get political, but many countries are willingly throwing away their traditions in the face of modernity. One remarkable thing about Japan is they hold onto traditions even as the world changes.

    One fact to correct, the Shogun during Kamakura period was a puppet child and the Shikken or Regent was the real commander.
    Takauji restored the title of Shogun as a real power, but he never wanted the title of Shogun at first when Go-Daigo made his son shogun. He was only unsatisfied with Go-Daigo politics and his brother Ashikaga Tadayoshi was the one who was angry of that. Takauji during Kenmu period was the "supreme leader of warrior class". Later in Muromachi Takauji is the new form of Shogun since Yoritomo's days, but the "real force" is held by Tadayoshi, and everyone knows what happens next.

    I really enjoyed the video! I'm curious about the detailed chronological events, wars, conflicts, and politics of lords and leaders in Japanese history, spanning from Oda Nobunaga to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Iiyashu era, and culminating in the Meiji Restoration. Could you make the videos in a series, covering each year?

    • @anikihistory
      @anikihistory  10 місяців тому

      Thanks for watching! I fully intend to cover every time period up until the end of the Samurai during the Meiji Restoration. I am not sure if I'll be able to cover each year since I usually try to give a compact overview of historical events. Nobunaga, Hideyoshi etc. are definitely getting a video that goes into more detail, though, stay tuned for that!
