Yup, max is rank 4 only then the leaf will keep on adding up for bonus. I think you can only merge a Treant with a Treant unless it is a Mime, Clown or Dryad. I tried with mime and it can turn into another unit. Yeah, it was quite fun and crazy to see it keeps on hitting hard. :)
