Hi Ivna! I work with clay and can give you a few tips!
Sculpey III is very very soft clay and can be frustrating to work with because of this. It's easy for beginners but it gets softer with the warmth from your hands, making it sticky like you said your disliked!
I would recommend Premo or Fimo. Sculpey makes Premo but it is higher quality, more firm and it's stronger after baking. It might be easier for you to get Fimo in your area but they both DO require you to condition them with your hands so they are more workable. Their firmness reduces fingerprints on the sculpture and holds details easier!
When using cutters: flatten out your clay however you like, place saran or plastic wrap over the clay and press the cutter into the clay and this will give you less sharp/rough edges which is less work!
I recommend trying to make everything as smooth as possible BEFORE you bake, because sanding is very labor intensive and messy. For those shapes i would pick them up, smooth them, flip them over and do the same thing. You can use clay softener on your fingers to help smooth the edges, just remember a little goes a LONG way!

oh wow, that’s a lot of good info, thank you so so much for sharing with us 💛 i really wanted to try the different brands, but everything is sold out everywhere, it’s the strangest thing! (well, not that much.. the demand has risen since self isolation started, right?) even this one i bought first costed me 13 dollars, now it’s 40?? 💀 as soon as i see premo or fimo i’ll definitely try it out! :-)
and YES i used the cling wrap whenever i was using cutters, it works perfectly!!! but the freehand ones are a bit trickier, what do you use to cut unusual shapes?
ahhaha yes there’s a lot to practice with those smooth not so smooth edges, but i guess it takes some time to get used to handling it 💪🏼 thank you so so much for your advice, i’m inspired to tackle the beast again! ahhaha
(btw i’d love to see your creations, do you have an instagram account with them?? 🥰)

@@IvnaLinsIllustration wow those at home crafters are really stocking up on the clay! For simpler designs, I would recommend trying a different method all together like starting with a ball of clay and shaping that into a flat mushroom for example, squishing and pushing until you have a good shape, then flatten out to your liking. Using a tool to cut might seem faster but for these simple designs you’ll save time not having to go back and smooth rough cut edges out!
For more complex designs it definitely pays to draw the shape/design on a paper, cut out the design and use it as a guide/stencil for your clay. You can sit it on a flat piece of clay and cut around the paper! Having a smaller cutting tool might help with tight areas, or you can use a long needle tool.
I’m not sculpting as much these days since I’m focusing on making silicone molds for my shop but my Instagram is @deepfrieddesignz

HAHAHAHHA i was thinking the same thing 😂 but well.. it serves its purpose, right? 👯‍♀️ aaaa thank you so much, it was a very weird experience! i know we’re supposed to love them for how imperfect they are, but it’s just hard to! 🤦🏻‍♀️ ahhaha what have you made with clay?? 😍

@@IvnaLinsIllustration I actually have never tried my hand at clay, I just obsess over polymer clay earring accounts on Instagram and now pin making videos on youtube ;) ! But eventually, I will try it, because I really would love to create my own earrings eventually! When I was a kid my piano teacher told me for recitals, no one else will know when you mess up except for you and me so just keep playing and no one will know, and I feel like art is kind of the same thing, like we are our worst critics! I don't even notice the imperfections you see, all of your pieces are so cute

HAHAHHA same thing here!! i was binging watching clay videos, it’s sooo relaxing 🥰 there’s charm in the imperfections! you and your teacher are sooo right ahhaha but it’s cause we’re so focused in every step (more than anyone else) and for so many hours.. we can’t help but notice all the tiny details 👀 it’s a constant battle to let go it just keep going 😂 youtube is like a playground to practice this letting go! that’s why a comment like yours makes me happy for a long time! 🥰💛 thank you!!! and aaaaa you’re in canada as well!!! wheeere? 👯‍♀️

Hi,🥺 I adore your pins the little mushrooms are soooo cute. I’ve been having a hard time finding a card stock for backings🥲, I wanted to ask what kind do you use and thickness? 😭

awww thank you so so much, you’re so sweet and kind 🥺💛 i totally agree, it’s hard to find a good quality cardstock for home printers 😭 i use a quite heavy one (200g from springhill), but i don’t love it! i would not exactly recommend 😂 best way is to outsource and print like a business card and use it as backing :( that’s what many pin sellers do! 😊 hope it helps 💛
