My friend had one of these when I was growing up. I rode in it many times. I always loved the sound of this diesel for some reason and this video brought back many memories. They sold it in 2017 for a Isuzu MU-X 3.0 D which is also a very good car

There is nothing wrong with shifting gears mannully by +/-. That is what the gear selector is meant to do.
