I think for quite awhile I was cutting back the endless summer the wrong way at the wrong time and perhaps not enough on the bobo hydrangeas. I like the bobos but not I think I like the limelight better.
Claudia, I always appreciate your videos and how you educate your audience. Hydrangeas are one of my all time favorite plants, and I have many varieties in my garden. I added more to my garden last year that I started and am a bit concerned about pruning them this year for growth this Spring. Thank you for helping me prepare for this Spring! ❤
Thank you so much Michelle, that means a lot to me. I but you have the most lovely collection of hydrangeas. 🤩 You mentioned you stared your own, did you take propagations?
@ No, I use to plant mainly in containers, and last Spring I took the plunge and started planted in the ground. I caught the planting bug and haven’t looked back since. I haven’t planted all around my property and keep adding hydrangeas wherever I can 💕. I just love you and your channel. You are such an inspiration!
@MichelleGreatDesignTherapy aww I love that!! The love is mutual! 💞 I swear once you get into gardening… there’s not turning back, only finding new friends who share this passion with you. 😁
This was the most easiest to follow video. Thankyou Claudia, you have made my pruing job soooo much easier. I have all three types of hydranger, so I am set now. 😊
Donna this literally made my day! I have watched so many videos on the topic prior to having UA-cam and always found it so confusing too until I learned how to prune them and my own way of explaining to my friends, so I wanted to share the way my brain works on pruning hydrangeas. Thank you for the feedback. 🥰
Aww hi friend!!! So happy to see you here, I was showing my friends your store and they were swooning! I seriously cannot wait to come see you again. I’m so happy this was helpful. 🤗
❤I have a story, About 6 years ago or so I picked up a 1 gallon panical hydrangea mind you I was totally clueless and not too much into gardening yet, well I've only pruned it once and it now towers well over my 6 ft privacy fence. Still don't know the name but it's huge tree form is spectacular ❤ ty for thus content!!
Isn’t that incredible!? I’ve seen people that have the space let them grow and they get absolutely massive and beautiful. There is one panicle standard at a display garden here at a local garden center and every time I see it it just takes my breath away, it’s a huge specimen. 😍
Great video .When I have a new hydrangea I always cut back severely,I get much more branching, stronger stems.. I cut and thinned my hydrangeas trees pretty severely too and had them probably 20 years.and they have strong stems and really full .Hydrangea are a little different in the south because of the heat and humidity, some do better than others also because we don’t cool off at night that much in the summer,it really effects the color too 🌿🌱. I want to try Little Lime Hawaiian Punch ,if I can find one this year 💚
This is so good to hear. Sometimes people get afraid of a hard cut back, but sometimes it’s necessary and our plants react so well to it. You’d like the Little Lime Hawaiian Punch. It’s so compact and has beautiful coloring to it. If you don’t find it at local garden centers you can always order one online from Proven Winners. 🥰
Great question, there’s no concern and here’s why, panicle hydrangeas produce their blooms on new growth, meaning the flower buds will form on the branches that grow in the spring. Pruning before a freeze won’t harm the plant’s blooming potential for the upcoming season. Panicle hydrangeas are hardy and can handle cold temperatures, but pruning stimulates growth. If the freeze happens after you’ve pruned but before the plant has fully gone dormant, it might stress the plant slightly. However, the damage would likely be minimal since this type of hydrangea is resilient. If you’ve already pruned, keep an eye on the weather, but rest assured that panicle hydrangeas are tough plants and should recover just fine.
Do you have pictures of them when they were blooming? If so I would recommend you take them to a local garden center to help identify. They may not be able to identify the exact name, but at least they will be able to help you identify whether it’s a big leaf, oaklef, panicle or smooth hydrangea. If you have Instagram feel free to send me a picture and I can also help. 🥰
Be honest, how many times have you cutback the wrong hydrangea? 😆
I think for quite awhile I was cutting back the endless summer the wrong way at the wrong time and perhaps not enough on the bobo hydrangeas. I like the bobos but not I think I like the limelight better.
I think we’ve all made this mistake one time or another. 😆 I also love the Bobo hydrangeas. 😍

Aww thanks Sonia!! I’m just trying to take advantage of these beautiful dry sunny days we’ve having and getting these garden chores done. 😆
It's Karli from Go Outside. Loved this video! I was just looking at my hydrangeas wondering if and how I should prune them. So helpful!

Thank you Claudia for another great video on trimming.
Aww thank you friend. It actually felt so satisfying getting them pruned up. 😆
Good morning Claudia!!! You're inspiring me to plant some hydrangeas lol. I only ever grew them in animal crossing
Oh you so should! 🤩 There are so many great compact varieties now too, I’d love to add more into our garden. 🥰

Thank you I am new to the panicle hydrangeas last year I bought 7 wasn’t sure how to prune
Ohh I love to hear this. Do you recall which varieties? I’m happy this helps, like I mentioned these are very forgiving to pruning. 🥰
Merhaba kolaylı gelsin güzel paylaşim emeklerinize sağlık. Mutlu kalın
Thank you. ❤️
What would happen to my panicle hydrangeas if I prune them but there’s a freeze?

Wish I could grow them in texas. Too hot.
I hope they come out with one that’s super heat tolerant one day for zones like yours. 🥰
I have hydrangeas but I don’t have any idea what variety they are! Do you have a resource to figure out what they are?
Do you have pictures of them when they were blooming? If so I would recommend you take them to a local garden center to help identify.
