- The Boy Friend (1971) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #TheBoyFriend
Working at the height of his formidable powers, Ken Russell braids a whole new layer of story onto the hit stage musical that made Julie Andrews a star and opens it up to some astonishing flights of fancy. Wrapping a narrative frame around the original - a seaside theatrical company mounts a production of the '20s musical spoof The Boy Friend - allows Russell, in turn, to explore and parody the conventions of '30s musicals with elaborate fantasy sequences, slapstick, and sentiment. This is the restored 'director's cut'/roadshow presentation!
Directed By Ken Russell
Starring Twiggy, Christopher Gable, Max Adrian

Twiggy was a wonderful icon who had so much talent. LOVE HER TO BITS.
Just got the blu ray, incredible. Twiggy is so good! Not only does she sing and dance but her acting is fantastic. Ken Russell is the man.
My grandmother is one of the dancers, front at 0:22!
LazyDayys so great ! What a lucky grandmother you have! Bonjour la France !
how wonderful. I wonder if she told you any stories about shooting the number. did she do any other numbers in the movie? it's brilliant choreography. I'd love to hear more.
Awesome!
This movie looks like a glittery acid trip and I am here for it!
The musicals this is paying homage to from the 30s are just as trippy (Footlight parade, Gold Diggers of 1933, Dames)
This is my favourite British musical. Have lost count of the number of times I've watched it, the first being two-and-a-half viewings on the first week of release in my local cinema.
Favourite French musical, 'Les Demoiselles de Rochefort' (1967) which I 'discovered' only a couple of years ago.
American favourite? Not just one - far too many to name, but they are mostly in black & white!
I never saw this film until now and with all these scenes I'm dying to have the complete movie!! Christopher Gable is a charm !!!!!
TWIGGY = SENSATIONAL
Endless...and tour de force film. Only the 70's. Only Ken Russel, the genius.
That cut at 1:03 is strangely nuts. Probably the first of many in this scene. Tight edits!
total beauty ... and the reflective surface of the disc @ 1:25 .. advanced aesthetics -and theres a scene in the big lebowski that owes a lot to this scene
@gary mc grath My thoughts exactly! The Cohens must have nicked it straight from The Boyfriend!
2:16 “Just dropped in, to see what condition my condition was in…”
Ken russels un director olvidado!!!! Es una pena como murio y que ningún estudio le financiara sus maravillosas obras. Él amaba el cine, apesar de sus peliculas de muy bajo presupuesto en sus últimos dias siguió haciendo lo que amaba! Grande ken. Tu arte trasciende ❤
Wow such splendid to the eye loved the visuals.
god bless ken russell
Ken Russell's ode to Busby Berkeley, mingled with Stanley Owsley's product. Brilliant casting, fabulous choreography.
And loathed by its creator - book, music and lyrics - Sandy Wilson. He refused to go to the premiere at the Empire, Leicester Square, London.
@@williamgardiner2010 Interesting. Was it just Ken's style that Sandy disliked?
LSD or cocaine, I can't decide which.
@@williamgardiner2010 Stop being so negative.
Amazing!!
Sheer bliss!
Psychedelic.
Frumos!
Orchestrations by Peter Maxwell Davies- the one and only
Adorei.
I did the play version as MDME KIKI DUBONNET the head mistress in Nice, France, the location of the school 25 years ago. There's theatre tradition you should learn on your own so that you may experience what that is on your own;
gostei.

Y bailaba bien la flaca!!😃👀👌🌹🍃🌹🍃💎🌠💎🌠
Seems weirdly lack-luster compared to the original inspirations.
Ah well. I suppose Ken Russell's mum thinks her boy is wonderful.
