Asa and the rest of the Buchanans were brought to OLTL after the Texas craze hit the country because of the popularity of the tv show Dallas. Asa was supposed to be an evil old bastard,an oil soaked charmer in the tradition of J.R. Ewing. The Buchanans hit that tv community like a texas bread tornado and Asa was a whole lot of fun. You can tell ,too, that Phil Carey loved playing him.
@flashdancebabe Phil Carey's health was declining and all decided it would be better to go out while still in good health. He passed in real life shortly afterwards. Yesterday there was an anniversary tribute to the legend. Also recommend seeing his performance in Calamity Jane with Doris Day

I would’ve said the same thing as Todd, and Natalie could’ve ordered me to get out all she wanted but I wouldn’t have left. I am actually that kind of person in real life. If said something like that about someone dying they would have to call the cops to drag me out in handcuffs.
Phil left OLTL quietly in mid-2007, then they killed Asa a few months later. Phil returned a few more times (as Asa in heaven and as recorded Asa for his will) before passing on himself in early 2009.
I'm glad to see that they didn't get anybody else to play Asa after Phil Carey died because there's nobody else that could have played that character like he did.

+belinda mcdowell SB Phil didn't really die until a year later, they should have left it out simply because it was out of character for Todd. Even he should recognize how permanent death is, like Blair did.

Phil Carey was a terrible actor. Many of his costars said he was terribly difficult to work with.
I loved that they kept Asa as tough as he started out and did not water him down or make him over the top evil.
Phil Carey played him well.

Asa passed in Llanview, not Landview...in the shadow of Llantano Mountain. It's derived from Welsh. Viki's estate was Llanfair.
