Interesting video, I am an EV owner - Audi E-tron 50 Technik which I bought new in 2020, and here are my good / bad / ugly real world experiences and thoughts. First off, do I like the car? yes, very much, I love the way it drives, and can find very little that I don't like about it. Will I be buying another EV? (I will be changing the car this year at 3 years old) An emphatic no I will not, certainly not until the charging infrastructure is vastly improved. So, here we go, I was told by Audi that the range of the car was 193 miles on a full charge, that turned out to be untrue, the most I have ever been able to get out of it was around 165 miles in the summer, in winter that goes down to more like 130 miles, and the charge time increases. I hear Tesla fans saying "should have bought a Tesla" sorry, I wouldn't buy a Tesla for a couple of reasons, I just don't like them, I think they are ugly, I hate the interior with that huge iPad type screen, and (not from personal experience, but from speaking to several Tesla owners while waiting at charging stations) questionable build quality. I would say that over 30 months of ownership, I have wasted more than 500 hours of my life (an hour a day 4 days a week) hanging around at charging stations waiting for my car to have sufficient range to complete my journey - I travel the country in the course of my business. "Should have planned your journey more carefully" I hear you cry, believe me I do plan as carfully as possible, yes I use ZapMap, that oh so useful app that forgets to tell you that a charging station is not working, or that your planned charge point is occupied by other drivers wasting more hours of their lives. Why do I need to download different apps for different charge points? when I used to stop for petrol or diesel, I could fill up in a couple of minutes, and pay with contactless card. I didn't care too much about the weather either, if it was pouring with rain I could fill up under the shelter of a huge forecourt canopy, I have lost track of the number of times I have been soaked while waiting for the charger to authorise the charge, why are all the charge points out in the open? Finally, cost, I have a home charger which is fine, marginally cheaper than ICE fuel, (For now, what's going to happen when Tax on ICE fuel starts to decrease, higher tarrifs for those with home chargers?) on the road charging is at least equal, and in most cases more expensive than ICE fuel. One minor point, I have probably negated any potential cost savings with the money I wouldn't normally have spent buying service area cups of overpriced coffee.

Having had an electric vehicle, was very disappointed with its performance especially in winter in the UK was like driving a six volt old Morris Minor or Beetle with half a gallon of petrol in the tank no heater windscreen wipers that reduced the range considerably if used constant range anxiety. I have reverted back to petrol did a 750 mile journey from West Wales to Sunderland and back in a day with two fuel stops that would have probably taken two days plus an overnight stay in an EV!
I was gobsmacked to watch this program as there was not one reference I can see to the abominable public charging situation in the UK it is a complete fiasco, and will only get worse as the number of EVs increases. How much copper will have to be mined to provide a proper charging infrastructure?
IINMHO the only way to run an EV in this country is to have it on your driveway, charge at home and just use it locally for shopping etc or leave it at the Railway Station for long journeys.
In typical EV hype fashion the fat cat EV supporters now want Joe Public to finance them to promote EVs. When they don’t address the elephants in the room ie Cost of EVs pathetic and inadequate charging infrastructure and garages unable to repair even the simplest of faults.

The issue is that oil companies will be hit hard if the UK swap to nuclear power and EV's (hydrogen for lorries). Also a lot less tax from fuel duty. ICE cars create a lot of pollution and people are too selfish to think about anyone other than themselves. Yes EV journeys take longer due to charge stops but you should be stopping every 2 hours for a break anyway as there are many accidents caused by tired drivers. I gave up a job which required a lot of driving (40k miles a year plus 60 hour weeks). I saw a person who said "Why would you buy a new EV when the costs are plummeting" which imo is a fair thing to say
Someone else said they're talking a load of rubbish. The other person referenced UA-cam. Then the person who said they're talking a load of rubbish said that they shouldn't use UA-cam as a source
I piped in, and said look that bit is actually true. Electric car values have indeed plummeted. I gave him an evening standard link
He then said "You're using UA-cam to pretend you're right and they're only lowering in price because they're getting to the price that meets demand"
I said "Whatever the reason, electric cars are absolutely going down in price, and I referenced the evening standard, not UA-cam"
Then I was told "the gist of it is that you're wrong"
I said "even in the face of overwhelming evidence?" I clarified that I'm not anti EV at all and I'd get a Hyundai Kona if they were under 7K and if anything, EVs going down in price is great for most people. My rationale is that I barely drive.
I've not heard of anything since. Sometimes even pro EV people need to see that not everyone is against them. That, and I'm glad EV prices are dropping especially when I don't actually need to drive that often and it's therefore much harder for me to justify upgrading my car

I then said I did consider getting an EV but I just don't drive that much. Most of my driving is to the tram and back
He said "What if you want to go to Cornwall in an EV"? I said how often is anyone doing that?
He said well people do it for their holidays maybe four times a year. He also mentioned that he's an HGV driver and drives for a living
He said it takes 6 hours one way + 1 hour of charging every two hours which adds on another two hours to your journey "
I was like "But it wouldn't. You could get a Hyundai Kona doing a real world mileage of 200 miles, stop and in 20 minutes you'd be charged up to 80%. Besides you're probably going to stop anyway because you need to go to the toilet"
He kept going on that alleged north to south distance. I said "Look, I get it if you're an HGV driver or even my dad who's a taxi driver and has a terraced house. I get it if driving is your main job main job and if driving is your main job AND you've got nowhere to charge but it's fine for the majority"
He still wasn't buying it and said he's apparently never wrong, and he hopes he won't be around when everyone has an EV. He also mentioned another couple of people in the street who got rid of their EVs in favour of cheaper cars. That couple are going through a divorce so they're probably downsizing because divorces aren't cheap

We dont really see them between services, except for tyres and brakes ( which they go through at a heavier rate than other vehicles) they are also heavier, but the big issue is the electronics, Battery Monitoring system failiers also the safety issues when working on the hot side electronics. They also need to be quarantined if theres any battery damage in an accident, insurance companies instantly write them off if theres any battery damage.

Lithium mining using slave labor to destroy the environment is somehow better in your eyes? There's currently thousands of abandoned electric cars and taxis in China rotting in fields waiting to present the newest threat to our poor earth. People do take long trips and the infrastructure isn't available ANYWHERE to support charging so many vehicles. Why should people spend exorbitant amounts of money on a ridiculously unproven and unreliable technology? And please explain to me what happens when you've actually used an electric vehicle for 6-8 years and now it's completely worthless because the battery needs replaced. Did you ever consider people can't afford to spend over half a years salary on a battery? America isn't Europe, over 150 million people here don't live in cities! People routinely live in lower cost areas and have to commute upwards of an hour and a half each way for work. Public transport isn't feasible. Get over yourself and stop looking down your nose at the less fortunate.

@@SheepletonYou are right slave/child labor is used to mine lithium in some countries, but then those same countries also use slave/child labor to mine diamonds and other precious stones, glass bottles, sports apparel and many other products that are exported to the west just so they can have nice things at low prices.
Child/slave labor has nothing to do with the production of lithium or any of the other products mentioned. It has everything to do with the corruption and greed of those running and profiting those industries. It also exists because there is a market prepared to buy those products and look the other way.
Ironically it is that same corruption and greed behind the paddocks of abandon ev's in China and corruption behind the rash of battery fires in China.
If you look these problems dont exist in the west. Tesla, Ford and VW etc. dont have paddocks of unsold EV's, they struggle to keep up with demand and have very few troubles with batteries.
Your comments re not taking long trips and lack of infostructure only show your lack of understanding, how many houses do you know that dont have electricity. Like so many you have not got hold of the idea that 95% of private cars are parked at home at night and have no requirement for a public charging network, in fact the average private driver covers 76 Km a day and the major EV models have a range of about 600 Km which is about the range of an average mid range ICE on a tank of petrol.
Yes there will always be exceptions and yes the public charging network is a work in progress but that will grow as the market expands.

The stories and videos that grab most attention are showing all the problems that one can encounter with an EV - usually wildly exaggerated. As you mentioned, we need you to demonstrate real life stories of people using their EVs with no drama whatsoever. This committee meeting was all about electric cars and the second hand car market as the second hand electric car market is stalling. It was found that the main reasons were that a great deal of second hand car dealers will not touch electric cars as they do not have the expertise in engineers and special equipment to service electric cars so they wouldn’t put electric cars on their forecourt for sale. Customers who were thinking of buying a second hand electric car were put off buying one due to the worry of the electric car battery condition as there is no UK wide second hand electric car battery pack checking standard and the second reason was the UK charging infrastructure. The plain and simple fact is that the 'greenest' way to own a car is to extend the life cycle of your current car. Be it a petrol, diesel, hybrid or EV, changing your car every 2-3 years is extremely harmful to the environment. CO2 isn't the only consideration that has to be taken into account, to build any new car requires resources to be mined, some of those mining processes are extremely harmful to both the environment and the workforce.. if we all kept cars for at least 5 years then the environmental benefits would be pronounced. Although government and motor manufacturers would detest the loss of revenue. Ultimately, that's what this has boiled down to, new cars are so prohibitively expensive that most people are getting into newer cars thanks to pcp deals. I've owned my car for 8 years, change the oil at 7000 mile intervals (unlike the manufacturers recommended 20k mile intervals) and envisage that I'll be driving it for a good number of years to come.

I've been watching you for a while now and this appeal marks a watershed not just in your vision but also for the British press as a whole. Quentin alluded to the BBC reporter and it is about time that the British press was held to account for all the misinformation, lies and downright deceipt it vomits into the faces of our poor populace. Let's get to the facts and let's start calling everything out.
But we can't do everything and I applaud your aim to call-out 'leccy lies and counter with the tailpipe truths.
Let's get one thing straight though. I am a self-confessed petrolhead. I have recently converted from a stupidly powerful SUV (20mpg) to a similarly stupidly powerful diesel saloon (40mpg) - so I've done a bit to drive down CO2 emissions. Now, you can see I can afford to buy a leccy shopping trolley and most are suitably powerful to satisfy my power crazed urges but I just can't do it. The quality, performance, price equation still does not stack up. I can't get it all for the same price - I have to compromise. And there's "range anxiety" but for me that's not really what it is. It's time anxiety. My daughter has a heart condition. My parents are old and in Scotland while I live near Heathrow. If I spend a day depleting my battery, I may not have enough left for that emergency situation. It preys on my mind. But I'm sure that in reality it is fine. But I can't afford to spend all that money on a compromised solution that might not work in the extreme situations that I know a petrol/diesel vehicle will. You need to be able to tackle the emotions around all potential use cases.
I'm reasonably educated and can see that the press spouts loads of anti-green phlegm and it's all designed to pull attention away from the critical message: we must move away from putting CO2 into the atmosphere. They tout particulate problems but lets get real, particulates are not an existential problem for the whole of humanity. They may affect a percentage of humans but right now it is not a priority. Let's nip that one in the bud. We need concentration on CO2 emissions.
However, and here is the kicker guys. I don't buy the "electrical route is the only path to God" evangelism the you and your likes spout. And trust me, it really does come across that way. As I said, I am reasonably educated but when I see so much trying to force something down my throat and governments legislating for a single path, I am naturally suspicious. Just think what most people think about you! You need to present a balanced view. If electrical really is the only future, there are a lot of people out there who are not going to be able to be mobile in 2030/35 because they either can't afford it or they can't charge effectively/cost-effectively at home or they don't have a use case that matches the current technology. These people are currently in the majority or at least they think they are. You can't win with further evangelism.
And what about alternative fuels? Why doesn't hydrogen or synthetic fuels have a place at the table? I'm genuinely confused as to why it's always just electricity that is put forward. Electric cars have a higher CO2 cost of entry, and so why isn't fuel technology that allows us to use the existing investment in ICE with minor mods also put forward as a solution? Are alternative fuels really not a contender? Nobody has effectively explained to me why it isn't. Or why it can't be a transition technology - it is in theory still better than burning petrol or diesel. Remember we are purely focussed on the reduction in CO2 production and absolutely nothing else, so explain why it won't work or adopt them as part of the overall solution. (You might need to change your name a little to accommodate: The Alternative Fuelly Charged Show?)
You really need to be better at explaining all the options. You need to accept that any incremental change that reduces our overall CO2 footprint is a good thing and has a place. You need to show the vision and the roadmap to the better future. By embracing all forms of improvement you can bring more people on the journey. I doubt there are many people who would disagree that we need to cut carbon emissions but there are far too many who don't think electrical cars work or can be the only solution now or in the near future. You need to show what else can be done in the next 20 years or so.

Much as I agree that EVs are going to replace ICE vehicles, the problem remains that a power station the size of Hinkley C will produce 3.2GW (peak), meaning the entire output of that station could support 320,000 EV charging points in simultaneous operation - provided each point was limited to 10kW. If you look at a rapid chargers (43kW), that falls to just 74,500 vehicles.
When the government talks of installing 2.3 million chargers, that translates to 8 nuclear station the size of Hinkley C for 10kW charge, or 32 nuclear stations for fast chargers. For wind energy, that would be either 24 or 103 offshore wind farms the size of Hornsea A. This would exceed the size of the UK territorial waters in the North Sea.
I'm honestly not sure what the way forward is here - however [white] Hydrogen (which seems to exist in natural quantities that exceeds global oil by x200) is a very real option.

Hi, I am a subscriber and a regular viewer of the channel. I really enjoy your videos, so thank you for producing them.
I don’t usually comment but I wanted to share my opinion following your ‘ Who is trying to kill…..’ vlog.
I am an average person living in the UK and I’m not involved in any way with the media. I can only really afford to purchase & run one car at a time. My views may, therefore, be reflective of other people living in the UK.
I do not own an EV and am not planning to purchase one in the foreseeable future. I’m not saying that I’ll never buy an EV, I may do when some of the developments you mention in your videos become reality.
To me, the purchase of any vehicle is an important one. After my house, a car is the largest purchase I’ll ever make so the decision of what to buy has to be correct.
The reason I have not purchased an EV is simple; they are far too expensive and do not meet my needs as well as an ICE vehicle. That’s it, it is nothing to do with what I’ve heard from a celebrity or what I’ve read in the newspapers.
I need a vehicle that is fairly priced, safe, reliable, seats 5 adults in comfort, provides me with convenience, saves me time, doesn’t depreciate rapidly and looks reasonably good. At the moment, on balance, an ICE vehicle delivers these needs better. If the balance changes in favour of EVs I will switch.
As I share the sentiments of this channel, if I could, I would buy an EV as a second vehicle to use locally, but, unfortunately, that is not possible.
I also have doubts on the government’s commitment to EVs as all our prominent leaders are still driving around in large ICE vehicles and are not leading by example.
    I’d welcome your comments.

I totally, 100% agree with you.
I know there are electric vehicles available now that are more than adequate for what you state you need. No question.
However, they are all new cars, and new cars are very expensive.
I didn't lease a new car until I was in my late 50's. I always had very old, battered, worn out vehicles which I can now see, trapped me in an endless round of mechanical anxiety, breakdowns, endless expensive engine, gearbox, clutch repairs.
I may have got the car for £250 but it cost me £5,000 over 5 years to run it, and that does not include the expensive fuel it burnt very very efficiently.
So I am hoping I live long enough to see a huge 2nd, and 3rd hand EV market. The cars will last longer and require less expensive repairs, they will be cheaper to run.
So for the time being, keep the vehicle you've got and don't worry about it. Electric cars will happen anyway, the more wealthier people and companies buy now (massive growth in sales even this year) the sooner there will be decent 2nd hand cars around.
And just in case you are wondering. By June this year, 18,000 new rapid chargers were installed, there are also some interesting solutions fro alternatives to home charging emerging.

I’m also unsure how much demand there’ll be for second hand EVs - the battery in my iPhone only lasts half as long after two years. If the same is true in vehicles who would want to buy one? They just arent viable enough.
The real world range is not competitive, cars are too expensive, lithium/cobalt/manganese sourcing has become a logistics and ethics issue, batteries dont last long enough, the grid does not have the charging capacity and the charging infrastructure does not meet the mass adoption requirements.

If you are able to find an available working charge point when you need one, you need to add an hour to your journey, and the cost of charging is getting higher all the time. A fully electric car only works if you are driving up to 200 miles round trip which means that you can always charge from home. Longer trips only really logistically work with a hybrid.

You are not alone in doing this and it's perfectly understandable, if slightly misinformed.
Believe it or not, thousands of people have spent the last 15 years talking about exactly these problems and are coming up with solutions.
      Those solutions are still developing.
I'm going to quote you here "2030 is way to soon and people will die because of this"
That is insane, no they are not. It's utterly ridiculous. After 2030 there will be 20 to 25 million, I repeat million combustion vehicles on the roads. No on, never, not one person has ever said 'everyone has to have an electric car by 2030. That would be insane.
You can't buy a NEW petrol or diesel car after 2030, that's all. You can buy a 2nd hand one for ever. You will be able to buy a 2nd hand petrol car in 2070 if you want.
The other interesting list you wrote, "Trucks, Boats, Planes, Container ships, Helicopters" slightly random but never mind, what about trains.
Anyway, everything on that list other than container ships will be electrified in the next 10-15 years. There are already 400,000 electric vans on the roads of Europe, and that number is growing by about 5,000 every month.
There are already over 5,000 100% electric 24-36 ton trucks made by Volvo already in use. I am about to test a 26 ton excavator on Friday, 100% electric. I have been on an electric plane, I will state now that in 15 to 20 years time, all short haul flights will be in electric aircraft, and as for helicopters, seriously, they are toast. They will all be replaced by electric VTOL planes in the next 5 years, this is already happening.
And one last and in some ways the most important point and one you have definitely read on QA-Anon, Fox News, GBTV or the Daily Mail
In the UK in 2010, 40% of all our electricity was generated from burning coal. In 2023 that figure is now well below 1%.
We do NOT burn coal to make electricity. we now produce between 30 and 60% of all our electricity from wind. Simple fact.

    6) Is it cheaper to insure an EV than an ICE car.
    7) Which EV is faster to re fuel than an ICE car.
    8) Can you guarantee that you can re charge immediately on locating a charge station.
    9) My ICE car will do 700 miles in just over 10.5 hours, 1 fuel stop. The EV equivalent is -?
    10) Which car is cheaper to de commission at end of life, an EV or ICE car.
    11) Where is the EV tractor that can pull a five furrow plough for 8 hours a day.
    12) Where is the EV HGV that can pull 44 tons for 12 hours a day.
    13) As for an EV Bus outselling a Diesel bus, where is the EV that can carry 55 people 500 miles.

      @djtaylorutube Рік тому

May I comment? Some of the questions you know the answer to and some aren't currently solved by an EV but there are some which are more nuanced than is often portrayed accurately.
      3) Tyre wear, some EVs have EV rated tyres, no difference unless you hoof it (which is easy and fun!)
      5) AA and all the others report this and then in small print "if you use only public charging". The cost to run is exceedingly variable from 0p per mile (solar charged) to possibly 20p per mile if charged only at a stupidly priced public charger. Typically, if charging from home, the first 200+ miles will be at a cheap rate leaving only the delta to be covered by whatever public rate. Given that 80%+ of charging is done at home then for most EV drivers, it's far less than diesel.
If I were to exclusively use my local Tesla supercharger off peak, it would be 9.5p per mile. Still cheaper than average diesel.
      6) Exceptionally subject to circumstances
      7) Lots of factors there which couple up with 8) and 9)
I have a diesel which on a good run could do 700 miles, i've got very close with a run to Scotland and back but...I stopped and also passed fuel stations on that route. I didn't need to carry that much fuel, we just do because it's inconvenient to fuel up.
I recently did a 339 mile round trip which included a charge time of 11 mins. During which was a loo break so the car did its thing while I did mine. No overall delay. The problem is people trying to use EV like ICE where they run flat and then think they have to charge to 100% again.
So the object isn't to compare single trip stats but overall blended results for a true picture and if you were to plot a trip of 700 miles, my expectation is that for ICE, you'd probably also stop. Yes there are always the superheros who do Land's End to John O'Groats, both ways, daily commute in under 20 hours, uphill both ways etc., personally i've never needed to do that trip but it's amazing how many anti EV drivers seem to do that one ;)
Another example which was interesting from a comment the other day, someone who said "I fill my Corsa with £30 and do 232 miles in 5 days, just 5 mins to add that fuel, can an EV do that?"
So assuming that's his 47 mile commute each day, for an EV it looks like this...Arrive home each day, plug in (takes 10 seconds if you're slow). No need to visit a petrol station, 232 miles driven in the same 5 days, time used to "fill" 50 seconds.
I'm not saying an EV is for everyone but those are just illustrations when making appropriate comparisons rather than trying to do EXACTLY the same behaviour.
I don't care what anyone drives, nor do they need to worry about my choices. Drive what works for each.

I have NO PROBLEM with EV's becoming popular! What I do take issue with, is the removal of ICE vehicles from the new car market, before EV technology has been perfected and made SAFE! Ever talked to the fire service about the EXTRA dangers to service personnel and the environment after an accident? Ever discussed the fires at charging points? Ever discussed the EXTRA PARTICULATES that are produced by heavier vehicles' BRAKE DUST and TYRES?
Why do these "zealots" constantly talk about cars parked outside schools with their engines running? ANY PARENT WORTH THEIR SALT, gets to the school early, in order to FIND a parking space! They turn off the engine, (unless they need the heater working?) because they might be sat for upto 20 minutes waiting for their little cherub, because the had to get their so early. WHY are these EV FOOLS not advocating kids WALK TO SCHOOL? Maybe even walk to school yourselves, and escort your little dartling home yourselves? Use FOOTWEAR instead of TYRE WEAR?
Referring to ICE owner/drivers as narrow minded or CLOSED minded, is deeply offensive! Is it not MORE closed minded to ignore the evidence presented by those who have done the research, and TRIED the tech, but found it impractical or NOT the financial boon it was promised?
EV's are continuing to prove they are NOT as reliable, or cheap to run as ICE cars. They are NOT the environmental saviors we were looking for. They NO LONGER MAKE SENSE!
What DOES make sense, is the societal forces that drive CONSUMERISM! A survey was done back in the 1990's about how to make cars more environmentally friendly! They looked at environmental costs of production, transportation to market, use, (fuel costs and effects) and end of life costs, via recycling and scrappage! The Land Rover Defender and the Jeep Wrangler came in the top 5! The Jeep was FIRST! Reasons were simple! ...BOTH CARS, although heavy drinkers of fuel, were LIGHT and not built for speed. They LASTED FOR DECADES! More than half of the entire production runs of each vehicle, were still in use decades after they were built, and easily repaired at the side of the road, with a basic tool kit! They were SIMPLE machines, and the cars transcended the "built in obsolescence" that was fast making cars fashion accessories! I would suggest that cars like the MG Midget, the MBG, and many classic cars that are still being collected and run as daily drivers, now fall into this category, of "environmentally friendly"! The carbon they still emit is ,by far, offset by the reduction in NEW CAR SALES! (and therefore, their manufacture!)
Our problems with the environment cannot be solved by building MORE machines! We need to STOP BUILDING MACHINES ALTOGETHER! Make the ones we already own last longer! We need to STOP having so many children! (we ACTUALLY NEED a global war to reduce the population and it's overall demands on the resources we have! ...but I'm not sure that would be politically popular?)

We're in transition, so yes, it's going to get messy because there will be winners and losers. If the oil companies are sensible, they will be using their income to invest in renewables and renewable energy infrastructure, including charging stations, although they may not have the vision for this and end up doing a spectacular imitation of Kodak. The writing is on the wall. However, I think it likely they will also try to keep extracting and selling hydrocarbons for as long as they possible can, if not in the advanced nations, then to the developing ones. This will be a test for the effectiveness of global politics.

Years ago a company we used to provide a voicemail system were selling voicemail services to people in African nations, where the people had no telephones, no mobiles, but used the service via public phone booths to run small businesses.

As someone who would like an EV my biggest issue is charging at home as this would entail having a lead going across a public footpath and common grass area so about 50ft from my front garden before I could reach the car, I would also not be happy to leave my car on a public charger 1/2 mile from home even though there are more public chargers here than petrol stations.
The other issue I have is with the cost of new EV's due to the level of technology they add to the vehicles if I could get a new EV that had very basic equipment more akin to a 1960's VW Beetle or a Caterham that would be great this would also make them lighter and more efficient. Hmm I wonder if we could start a car company here in Scotland maybe called Scottish Car Company or something.

EVs are a great target for selling FUD news. We also have a badly educated public. I saw an uneducated public with DVDs. That people needed educating to understand the advantage over VHS for buying films. Instant access, better picture, storing surround audio, extras. And DVD took a decade to go from a "new thing" to being eveywhere. And that was apparently was adopted more quicker than most tech.

It's cold in Yorkshire most of the year which means the vehicles will never run efficiently therefore increasing the amount of time I will need to charge the car. This is a fact as you know. Therefore my car as an eV is worth less immediately. The figures given on range are ridiculous. EVS are plummeting in value. Only people with secure drives can have a charger. Millions live in properties with on street parking. It is more expensive to charge a car using fast chargers at stations. My little diesel fiesta goes to London from the Yorkshire Dales and back on one tank so 60 quid. I don't need to stop at a services to buy an expensive coffee while I wait for 40 minutes if I can find a vacant charger. I can't afford 35k plus for a new vehicle and why should I be forced to. The installation of a home charger was AU$1700 (inc the charger). The annual service bill for his Benz was ~AU$2000. So he installed the charger for _less_ than an annual service. (Side note: His Volvo only needs a service once every 2 years). He's owned various Benzes since 1999, but he will *never* go back to Mercedes or an ICE vehicle. Why a Volvo? He preferred it over ALL the rivals, and was sold during the test drive.

We've run an electric car for the last 6 years (Soul, then e2008) on lease. Prefer them in every way to ICE.
Unfortunately, our financial circumstances have changed, and when our current lease ends in a couple of months, we'll be switching back to a very cheap, 2nd hand petrol-engined car. We simply can't afford to lease an EV anymore, and there isn't a market of affordable second hand options that would meet our needs.
Given the current "cost of living crisis", there must be many others in our position 😢
So it's not just negative press delaying the transition, it's also affordability at a time when increasingly more people are struggling to make ends meet, let alone buy/lease expensive EVs.

In my view the key problem with electric cars is they are cars. They have their place, but the widespread use of them to move people in and around cities is just a bad idea. The cars being electric doesn't make traffic disappear. Nor does it make them particularly lower emissions than decades old public transport. Not universal, but there is an element of BEVs being flashy toys for rich people to feel green in which winds people up.
Much more investment needed in public transport + cyclable cities.

I drive an electric vehicle, which bot myself and my wife love. And in fairness we have been wanting to go electric for about a decade, but due to cost could not. I can tell from a professional stand point ICE is going to disappear faster than most consumers think. Diesel from the view of who I work for is dead, and petrol is not far behind, R&D is now on alternatives, the biggest one is BEV based. Hybrid vehicles have only ever been a stepping stone to fully electric or hydrogen fuel cells.

The biggest thing that is hitting the sales of EV's is range anxiety and the availability of charging points that work for their vehicle! ICE vehicles have not got that problem as the infrastructure is country wide and the filling systems are universal and only take minutes, plus the range has a level of reserve built into them!
Was this video aired pre the ship in fire in the North Sea due to new electric car bursting into flames and destroying over 3000 vehicles and the ship!
Air quality is just fine in the UK, and we have over 100 years of Oil &Gas under our feet so we are energy secure for ICE vehicles where we have to treble if not quadruple our electricity generation just to service the proposed net Zero target! That has been estimated to cost three times the GDP for years to come!

This should have been capped by the government and is just the greed of these charging companies. I know what these companies will say, and it is the same b**ls**t that privatised service companies give, that there is upkeep when they are making record profits. Chargers should be super reliable by now and require little maintenance. There is nothing to stop them eventuallly setting prices higher than fuel! It is just greed! All that will happen, and it is to an extent already, is that people will avoid them altogether negatively impacting the whole public network.
