Jimmy Somerville went on to form The Communards not long after this with hits like “Don’t Leave Me This Way” , “ So Cold the Night” and “There’s More to Love Than Boy Meets Girl”
Should have watched the official video which shows him getting beat up for being gay and his dad turning his back on him and giving him money (well a note) to leave town and his mother giving him a hug as he left home knowing she prob would never see him again. Hence it is called Small Town boy because going to a big city at the time if you were gay was common once people in a small town found out you were gay.
@@zanyzander and I think Jimmy is from Scotland not London, he is singing about being gay in the 80s outside of London. Really, the video would have explained it more.
I remember my father explaining that to me when I was a child, I listened to this album so much. I’m so sad for anyone who is discriminated against. Love, respect and acceptance for all 💜💙💛
I was going to write something but you have captured it perfectly. We had a kid in school in West London who had come out at 16 in 1984 and he stated this song had helped him and others.
This was a HUGE alternative dance club hit, always packed the floor. Another English group, Groove Armada, years later put out a song, History featuring Will Young, which sounds very much like Bronski Beat. Amazing sound as well.
Too bad you didn't see the video to get the undertone of why the song came about. More than danceable, it was a bit of a coming out song back then when it was much harder to do so.
100% this one song changed a lot of bigoted attitudes towards the gay community back in 80's UK. I think it doesn't get enough credit for how it helped redefine cultural perceptions.
I love watching reactions. When songs like this were released in the 80s it was something really, really new, fresh, different, a sound never ever heard before.Sadly UA-cam can't portray the feel and fame of it. Perhaps in 30-40 years from now, you going to watch reactions and you just wonder....

Oh I was so excited for this reaction and then I read that it wasn't the music video. 😫

Ahhhh yay finally!!! Love this song 🎶 💃🏽 “I feel love” by them is also another great hit!
Always enjoyed this 80's song from this band, super request and reaction...
The story of being young and gay in an English town, amazing song, one of the greatest 80s songs to come out of the UK 👍

👍
Took some guts to put this out during that era, and especially the video. Pretty triumphant all the way around.
The vocals, the beat, dancing on the dance floor & into the street.
Yep this screams 80's. Definitely a staple on my new wave/synthpop playlist.
This song breaks my heart.

The Fine Young Cannibals version of Suspicious Minds - is THE BEST version of that song.. with Somerville on back up - just outstanding!
Another great song by them is "WHY?"

For sure. Must see the video. Can still bring tears to my eyes. Absolutely an underrated song.
I remember this song. Good to hear it again.
High NRG = High energy dance music
