  • Welcome Gardeners! Goodbye Critters!!! Ok, well, hopefully goodbye critters! After waking up every morning this week and seeing a literal party going on in my backyard, I finally had enough! I decided to get going on my plans for a no-till garden bed in the back yard! I will be doing EVERYTHING I can to keep the critters away… do you think I can do it? 🤔 Enjoy!

Ground squirrels are really challenging....get a trap that allows you to catch multiple and then sink in water. It's the easiest way to tackle them in the area. They spread disease and you have to stay on top of it!

Also, Janey, Costco uses giant sheets of cardboard between the layers of their displays. I bet that would work for no-dig gardens, too.

Excited for the new garden space! Go ahead and plan for a rabbit proof fence around that garden. Also, please, please space those beds more than 2 feet. I did mine 3 feet apart and wish I would have done more! Plants are growing out into the walkway and can’t get through. Trust me! 😂

I've heard other gardeners I watch use that liquid fence, hope it works. You might do well to get a low tunnel for your raised beds too, til the plants take on a bit of sz. If you're not watching Charles Dowding...No Dig...on here you guys should be. He's a market veg gardener, he's been no dig for over 40 yrs, he's a pleasure to watch, his flower beds are also no dig. If you want to know everything you need to for composting he's your man for that too.

I had huge garden beds on my property where previous owner spread color dyed mulch about 6" thick. Arg. I read that the dyes are terrible for the dirt, and so it took me all summer to shovel more than 20 bins of mulch! I don't know what kind of mulch you have, so it could either be really great or devastating to your veg roots. The cardboard won't be enough to suppress weeds in pathways, so you may want to reconsider laying gravel or something heavy over the cardboard. Good luck!

Interplant with things rabbits don’t like-chives, garlic, alliums. Put wire cages around the base of shrubs. Raised beds for veggies and pots for flowers. I also use motion sensitive sprinklers and ultrasonic devices and those have helped. Block off areas they burrow in after making sure no babies there-base of sheds, porches, stairs. Remove brush piles. Lastly-a dog is the best defense as you mentioned! As everyone has said- I’ve had limited results with sprays and granules bc when it rains have to reapply.

I would highly recommend wider than 4 feet between rows. It may seem sufficient but once plants start to spill over the edge of the containet, you are going to lose some serious footage.
Ground squirrels and the like are relentless. Id suggest putting hardware cloth (hard metal mesh) on the bottom of those containers before you fill them. I didnt and have to dig every single one out to place it.

      1. Great that you left mulch. It will be extra work for you and not really necessary. Additional that much is organic matter and will compost over time.
      2. I bought metal raised bed 3 years ago. They are great. Just remember that you can’t sit on the edge of the bed so make enough space between bed for easy access and for wheel barrel.
      3. This year I bought another two metal raised beds, this time hexagon ones, to put in front of my house for my cannas. I have septic system so I can dig the soil too much.
      Works great.

This year I let the clover grow upto 3" within my lawn, and the rabbit was nibbling on all my clover and left my other plants alone. I even allowed the slugs to eat my hosta. What's a few holes here and there? Even the slugs need food. It's kind of an ecosystem. We've already done so much damage invading their territory in the first place.

Spray liquid fence and also for your veggies, plant them high up in raised beds (the highest you can get) and hope that the rabbits don’t want to go through the effort of trying to get up there! Yep, bunnies are relentless. I would look around at the fence to check for places the bunnies might be getting in. A bunny can slip through a space about 3 inches wide. I contacted the state wildlife service in my area to learn about how to deal with varmints. I use copious amounts of Liquid Fence because you want the critters to think your property is awful. I think I'd put a small tractor on my wish list, along with the dog.

  • @Pipscape

Just a note on bed spacing from another Sunset zone 9 gardener and space use planner. Think about how you and others will move through and use the space, the views and borrowed views from different locations. Leave more room than you initially think necessary between the beds. I've found that the bounty of summer here tends to spill over and 4 feet isn't quite enough to get comfortably through the plant spillage with a wheel barrow or garden cart.
And, the boxes that abut the middle space where you want a fountain...you will want to make those a bit shorter in length so that there is at least 4 ft to walk around the fountain between it and the ends of the beds. Even a bit more if you plan to plant around the fountain.
The scale of your new garden is quite different from the smaller lot in town. I encourage you to sart thinking about the breathing space between things...in art it is termed negative space and it is what allows the focal point to shine.
Good luck with the critters. I use the liquid version, but it does have to be reapplied regularly. Stay cool. Temps have been brutal this week. 🥵

Yep! Janey has plenty of space in her new garden, and it can take some time to think about space use in new ways. But being able to get green waste containers and wagons or even just walk comfortably with another person is so important.
We put raised beds in a narrow side yard and on paper it seemed like I could get more in there than I could. So glad we mapped it all out with string lines and made adjustments. It has stood the test of time and use and I have a crazy amount of growing space for the size yard, and can still move equipment and people through with ease.

I see the bunnies eating away at the lawn and leaving the plants. Just a thought if you wanted to add some clover seeds to your lawn, not to mention the bees love them too and they stay green even with dogs peeing on it. Bonus! I would say at this point my lawn is now 50% clover. I also got a motion spotlight that triggers in dark to keep skunks at bay. So far it's all working.

We have rabbits that burrow under our shop and deck. And groundhogs. Armadillos and squirrels dig in the yard, and deer took out all of my hostas. I have a groundhog that comes up on my back deck to sample the potted plants. Snakes are always a surprise. Welcome to country living! Chicken wire is a good investment along with raised beds. You will figure it out and laugh and cry along the way. What an adventure gardening can be! Stay positive!

Just curious why you are laying cardboard over the whole area? Just put under the raised beds. Your current mulch will act as a weed barrier for your walking paths between the raised beds. Save on work and cardboard. Loving your space! So happy for you!

Hi Janey, Love seeing the blank slate and all the dreams and plans as they evolve and change! I'm an architect and landscape designer and I loved seeing Michael glassman's ideas. The pool in the rear yard is going to be magical (in the future, lol)...I recommend leaving a little more space around the bird bath - 4' is too small. Just remember - the scale in the country is different than a lot in town! PS - I'm semi - local. I lived in Grass Valley for 15 years and am now in San Jose - so I'm familiar with your neck of the woods. ;)

I did research on garden beds this spring when my community planned to go with two feet between beds - that's not recommended. Kneel down and notice how much space your knees to feet take up because you'll be doing that at some point. We went for three feet and are happy. Also do you use a cart or pop up bag - how big are they?

I would only do the no-dig in the spots you plan to grow (ie in the 4x12 beds) and rake the mulch into your planned pathways. Otherwise you're just creating a better growing environment for weeds in your paths.

We had to plant our shrubs in chicken wire baskets, and we also lined our raised vegetable beds with chicken wire (be sure to get the small openings, or use wire mesh). Ground squirrels can tunnel under the beds and cardboard alone won’t stop them. Nasty little critters 😵‍💫

Rabbits and groundhog (the worst destroyer) have done quite a number on my plants this summer (not much of one) here in New England. I use Liquid Fence spray but it must be reapplied after rain, which we’ve had almost everyday. When we first moved here, I never had deer, rabbit, or groundhog damage. As I think back, it wasn’t due to luck. We had two dogs and two cats. No problems. Now we have neither. Going to find a humane way to get rid of the groundhog. As for the rabbits, I decided to let it go for this year. I even named one Edward Hopper. So cute. My advice for you…get the dog. 😊

We had major problems with groundhogs.....finally got rid of them by pouring ammonia around the decks they were trying to demolish (and almost succeeded) by digging to go under the joists and piling the dirt against them, causing decay. The ammonia will definitely get rid of them. We haven't seen any for two years now. At one point we had a mother with 8 pups. We're in Ontariol

I moved from Southern California to East Texas seven years ago and I needed to make a lot of adjustments for all the wildlife. I live 5 minutes from downtown Tyler in an old and established neighborhood. The squirrels watch me plant and than dig up my plants. 😢 I have a 100 plus years old oak tree my backyard and it is a squirrel nursery, playpen and oh, all the acorn donations every year creating 1000 of offsprings and leafs. I am almost adjusted 🤣🤣🤣🤣 love watching your show ❤

One comment had fantastic idea of checking the gate for any holes for the rabbits. Also please look into placing fence wiring forgot the name to keep animals from getting into garden beds from underneath. It can be stapled onto the corners of the beds before adding the soil. Enjoy. I leave small sections of weeds around the property, especially back by the creek in the woods just for the bunnies. I know they aren’t going anywhere unless the fox take care of them or humans get rid. I did have a Tom cat that unfortunately used to eat all the bunnies at our country home. But he doesn’t go outside anymore because of bobcats and fox. So far the bunnies only eat a few things in my garden. Honestly, I have so much echinacea and black eyed susans it’s not really a big thing when the bunnies munch away. Now last year when I was getting new gardens established it was sad to see many newly planted ones eaten but this year the abundance of flowers was so beautiful. What I noticed was the daffodils and allium kept them away long enough earlier in season so those types of plants could grow big enough no tender growth was eaten. Idk that was just my observation with the critters. I kinda love seeing the baby bunnies now taking refuge in the daisies which they don’t eat but use as shelter. It was so cute! It is a new experience living in the country but so worth sharing space with the critters. My only hope is those “kids” the goats don’t get in. Those little weirdos do a ton of damage, lol. We used to live by a goat farm and the babies constantly got out. They literally sound like kids yelling or crying when they can’t get back in the fence. Lol 😂They’re so cute though.

You might want to add more nitrogen to your soil if you’ve left the mulch under the cardboard. It could take longer for them to break down and would take more nitrogen away from the plants you are trying to grow. If you had a taller raised bed I don’t think it would be an issue as much, but just to be safe, I would sprinkle more alfalfa if this was my garden.

I have a raised bed with tomato plants. The squirrels picked and ate every single tomato this summer. My husband had to put several strands of electric fence around the bed so that we would get any tomatoes at all. There are UA-cam videos showing how to do it. Rabbits usually eat my Asiactic lilies down to the ground too. Gardening when you have squirrels and rabbits is tough. Best of luck!

Rabbits are relentless in Minnesota, especially the babies and squirrels. Irish spring soap shavings around the entrances from where they like to come has helped and coyote and fox urine granules too. Golden Retrievers are a gorgeous breed BUT unlikely they will chase critters. They like to be friends with EVERYONE!
