  • In the 2024 Rugby Championship we have three new coaches in charge of their respective national teams. Then there is Rassie Erasmus the back to back World Champion Head Coach in charge of the South African Springboks.
In this episode of Inside Rugby with Mark I give my assessment of the coaches in the Rugby Championship thus far and I ask you for your opinion as well.
Thanks so much for supporting this channel.
As a retired Kiwi bloke living in Mexico my aim is to play a small role in helping the great game of rugby to grow across the world. Your support is fully appreciated.

Felipe is no doubt the man of the hour. He's brought argentina into the conversation time and time again this championship, its already a major victory for them regardless of what happens on Saturday. Delighted because we need new teams knocking on the door of the top 5 and between the players, the fans and their style of play, argentina is a terrific rugby nation and deserve the success.

@@insiderugbywithmark True enough. I am a fan of this Argentina side, just think their recent form is overblown. What have they really done? The biggest win is a flaky NZ team who haven't looked convincing at all. Apart from that, they are 1-1 at home with a very mediocre Australia, and a narrow win against effectively a second-tier SA at home. I think we'll tell a lot more about them after the next game re being one of the "top teams".

Mate Razor has won a club title, an NPC title, NZ U20 title and d of course the super title (multiple) - he of course always needed time rebuilding in 24.
…against the wallabies we crossed the line 3 times - minor precision errors wiped them all out. Could have been 50.
He’s not far off and I think his strategy of trying to blood a few new guys with maturity around him is just slightly out - agree.
Yep he now needs bolder selections at 9, 10, 13, sititi to 8, Savea to 7 etc and I think this week we may see it.
But this whole “never really cared about him at super rugby” is kind of strange - He will learn and be better. He always has so far. I am one who thinks he will start to feel settled.

@nzfreeski Hola mate, thanks so much for the comment. Allow me if you will to clarify a couple of things for your benefit.
If you have watched a number of my videos where I have talked about Razor I have constantly said this.
      1. He needs to play players in the right positions and he should select younger players and trial them to see what they have got to offer. ( to which you have agreed above).
      2. I have also said in those videos, take 2024 and be prepared to lose games, even though the NZ public cant handle that, to make sure you have your best 23 players on board and in form.
      3. “never really cared about him at super rugby” is kind of strange , This was your comment. What I said was, I was not living in NZ during Razors entire reign at the Crusaders and nor was I taking any interest in Super Rugby at that stage of my life journey. Not strange at all, thats my truth.

Rassie is doing well and continuing to evolve his team. Joe has a huge job ahead but I think we can all agree that we can see some of his magic-dust in the teams performances. Felipe is turning the Pumas into one of the best attacking teams in the world. Razor is the only that looks out if his depth out of the four...some of his selections are letting him down, but we have entrusted him to bring us RWC glory in 2027. None of the coaches are perfect but 3/4 is building something that we can identify, the other needs to get his head out of the Super Rugby. The next few years building up to RWC 2027 will be interesting.

My take on 1/2 a cup is that the cup stays 1/2. Rather come prepared to fill that cup. The Tony ball is delivering 25% more tries, but we give away 50% more tries as defense suffers along the way. Thus they empty their cup along the way and along that same way, Rassie introduces new players which is good, but done the wrong way as new players and a new system which is not working well, fails to deliver clear answers. Contepomi recognised it and used the more open style we play to eat us. Think what the French will do, propably destroy us. Rassie need to tone this new style down a bit with more direct rugby. Wear them down and then hit them. It is a better environment for new players to find their feet in.

I agree, Argentina and Felipe are the surprise of the competition. Never have we beaten all three in a year, so that is fantastic. I do bad for Razor, because I think his selection is based on fear and the need for results, more than long term preparation for the RWC. . Whereas Rassie, can afford to shake up the roaster and lose, like he did on Saturday. He has more cushion and ability to play. I think this will only serve SA, because you're right Mark, he will bring the top 50 to RWC. Looking forward to Saturday! Cheers and thanks for the great videos.

Thanks Mark. Spot on. Rassie should know now that in a world cup quarter, semi or final an erratic kicker is a non starter. We need better backup at 10. Sacha has already had two knee operations so we're vulnerable there. Jordan Hendrikse kicked a 59m penalty at Ellis in the rain to win the Currie Cup. Time to swap out. He could have moved Pollard to 12 and we would already have the R Championship. But he learns from his mistakes.

Joe Smith is a great coach but the results doesn't necessarily highlight that fact. Nor will Rassie becomes a bad coach if S.A. suddenly start loosing games. Hey Mark, It's fair to say that Bok fans are divided currently. There's no denying the need to regenerate the team, due to it's age profile, but doing that whilst simultaneously evolving the playing style, is making the Boks look mediocre, scraping home, or just losing games they should be dominating.
Many fans are frustrated that the Boks aren't putting high scores on what are comparatively weak RC teams, like the AB's did to the Boks, when the Boks were struggling.
It's not as if the Boks weren't playing attractive rugby last year. I think of tge game against the AB's at Twickenham and the WC games against Scotland and France. No one ever won a WC final by playing end to end rugby, scoring five or six tries.

    • @JodyForbes
      @JodyForbes 2 дні тому

Only NZ has even won a Rugby World Cup final scoring more than 2 tries. 1987 when South Africa wasn't there. Then 2015 where it took them until the 79th minute to get a 3rd try.
I can only rate true World Cups as being from 1995 onwards to include the Springboks. So in 8 World Cup finals over 28 years, 1 final where a team scores 3 tries and it took 79 minutes to do that. I would also suggest an anomaly in the 2015 final in that NZ/Australia games seem to be a bit looser as a rule of thumb.
It's also worth noting that only 1 country has won a world cup after losing a pool game. That's South Africa which has done it 2x. There's a dogmatism that needs to be considered in regards to certain rugby cultures.

@adrianincapetown7043 an interesting read and as an All Black fan all of my life I can relate to this as this mindset is what we have always endured.
An expectation that we will go out and spank teams and when we dont everyone is yelling from the rafters. The dangers I see in this conundrum from our side in this is,
Arrogancy comes into the equation as other teams are always trying to improve and they are. Once they catch up, and in the case of the All Blacks pass you it impacts the entire rugby eco system, coaches, players, and fans.
As a Kiwi I have always loved and admired and respected what the Pacific Island teams and players bring to world rugby as they are some of the biggest men on the planet yet so gentle and humble as people. Not directly to your point, but there are some cross overs perhaps

@insiderugbywithmark Thanks for the considered reply, Mark. Bok fans have endured too many heavy drubbings in the recent past, at the hands of the AB's, to be arrogant. I guess that many just feel that the current evolution of the team and playing style, is "robbing" fans of the opportunity of being on the right side of one or two of those drubbings for a change, while our greatest opponents are relatively weak..

Razor and inexperienced test coaches are learning on the job, pity he didn’t offer Joe Schmidt more than just a selector/ advisor role or maybe he’d be on board now - coaching backs attack and breakdown like he did for Foster plus those other roles too! Razor only coaches/ selects the loosies.
Now it looks like the professor is in to do some de facto coaching! cos who is Tamati Ellison as a coach?
Maybe they could also use some of Schmidts bite right now, cos the fade away in Sydney was really poor and am sick of hearing, we talked about it.
Buck stops at Razor but most of the coaching is down to his assistants, he and Ryan’s forwards are well selected and going fine but the backs aren’t getting clear strategy direction from their coaches imo. and yes, defense isn’t consistently cohesive - Felix Jones was available?
I get that Razor wants to be, and be seen to be the head honcho and also be loyal to who he’s worked with and knows - but Leon McDonald was a mistake imo and i don’t think Holland/ Hansen/ Ellison are better back attack coaches than Schmidt would’ve been - esp. with their dearth of international experience, cos SR style isn’t doing our players any favours in skill set dealing with in yer face pressure of NH style rush defense but SR style is all these coaches know.
So maybe NZR needs to be more prescriptive of who the AB coach must have as assistant like they did to Foster in the end? Guess they’ll be reviewed EOY.
Schmidt might have gone to head coach WB’s anyway but like Browny, isn’t here, when either of those two might have been induced with a better Razor offer? and maybe he should’ve tried harder to get them, cos at this level, loyalty to the black jersey trumps loyalty to whoever you feel more comfortable working with and it’s important to grow and evolve, like Rassie is trying to do in getting Browny on board.

    • @insiderugbywithmark

@TheRickpage a combination of reasons why what is happening is happening. Many are saying, the backs are creative and innovative and able to put on a ton of points, aka Sydney and Eden Park. Its the back end of games where discipline ( yellow cards and penalties), execution skills, and leadership appear to be hurting. Leadership for me comes down to on the field, the players. Nothing the coaches can do here, except make sure you have the right leaders. Discipline is on the players, not the coaches. So experienced guys should not be getting yellow cards and giving away messy penalties. The ABs are leading the stats for points scored in the first three quarters of ALL rugby championship teams so far this year. The issue is the last 20-30 mins, clearly.

Mark what do you think of this card story, it was first introduced to stop fowl and dirty play, but now a yellow card for all sorts of minor offences, especially when the ball is in the air and 2 players are running looking up to catch if one jumps up catches the ball and crashes into the other player , the other one is given the card , how ridiculous if the one on the ground had caught the ball then the one jumping would get the card , this is just one example of many ridiculous situations where a yellow card is given, deliberate dirty play no problem give the card , but come on its spoiling the game, in my day I would not have lasted 5 Min.

@jimmylemley3121 hey Jimmy, thanks for the question. Look I think you hit the nail on the head with your last sentence. The game has moved on from the times we remember. Its trying to keep pace with player welfare, and trying to stop potentially dangerous play. Different refs and different TMOs boxes see different things, so its very hard to get it right in the eyes of us fans.
One thing I will say, those who played for the All Blacks in the 1960´and 70´s didint retire with brain damage or other severe issues.

We need to forget about Mounga and Smith. They may never play for the All Blacks again with or without the current Selection Law. What we need to do is develop the players we have here and Razor needs to stop talking to Mounga about coming back and do what he's paid to do. Coach the current All Blacks. Maybe instead of worrying about Mounga, he should worry about the players he's not selecting and is pushing overseas.

Why do SA coach's always go for conservative game plan even in games that really don't need that, this past weekend was a classic example of Rassie selecting a very conservative team and trying to just strangle a result out of Argentina, that 17-0 lead showed that a properly balanced Bok team could've ran away with that game.
Even the Cape Town test vs All Blacks, why did they bring back Willie and Pollard etc, when Sacha and Fassi were starting to settle in the jersey.
That's been the issue for years now, I've seen the Boks lose so many games that they just weren't suposed to lose or could've won with the slightest ingenuity in attack or selection

@michaelmansvelt9843 I would say in response that Rassie wants to give Manie confidence building under these types of situations. Better now than in a world cup knock out game.
Plus also dont forget, Manie did two tremendous contestable kicks in general play that ultimately lead to the penalty opportunity, so if that had not been the case then there would had been no kick.

I think the AB coach is struggling because I don't think the previous coach did a proper "handover" of the baton. Argentina and South Africa have experienced coaches at national level and have been part of the set up since before the RWC. Joe has incredible credentials if you see what he did for Ireland, under his leadership rugby is in good hands in Australia. The Pumas are unlikely to win this year's championship even if they do edge the Springboks in Nelspruit, simply because of points difference. The only way they can lift the cup is if they humiliate the Springboks with a big score and prevent the Springboks from getting a bonus point. Next year I believe the Pumas will be strong contenders as well as Australia. I hope the Springboks continue to improve, the competition is just going to get tougher.

I havent listened to your comments yet but I will say this. I always said Robertson was grossly overated and I've seen nothing to change my mind. In fact I have a lesser opinion than I had at the beginning of his "reign".
6 tests in and many of his newbies have had bugger all game time. So where is the development?
His big problem is that he and his coaching disciples are paralyzed by the fear of losing. On top of that we have a leadership group unable to problem solve in the heat of battle. We also have the worst performing bench in the history of modern rugby. When was the last time the ABs failed to score a point in the last 20 mins of FOUR CONSECUTIVE TESTS? I have never seen a less effective gaggle of coaches. How many voices have the players got ringing in their ears? Bloody pathetic.

Spot on Mark, I agree with about 99% of what you're saying. I will however remain steadfast in my support of Razor, he is a magnificent coach and, like all coaches, he needs a bit of time to get to know the players, systems, different ways at international level and the opportunity to make mistakes, because he too needs to learn. Of all the coaches you mentioned, he has been in the seat for the shortest time. He is showing a willingness to learn by approaching Smith for tactical advice. He inherited a cynical, destructive culture from Hansen that deteriorated even further under Fozzie, the rot set in after 2015 - it takes time to change culture, ask Rassie, it didn't happen overnight. I believe in Razor. Razor is smart and will start to make changes when he's learned what he needs to learn. I'm more worried about NZRU and the leadership of rugby's administration in NZ, THAT is the problem. It is systemic and will take a long time to fix. The pool of players Razor can pick from is very small thanks to some stubborn strategies at the top. And if you then need to compete with soccer, NRL and basketball as well, then we know the answers don't we? The problems in NZ are far bigger than you think.

    • @markreilly105

Razor made his bed, now he needs to lie in it. He was given the option in 2019 to cut his International teeth, but didn't take the chance. Now he chose his coaches and then fired one 5 games in. I am starting to believe one of his issues is that he does not allow anyone to have a differing opinion to him. He doesn't like it. He also, as a self professed communicator, seems to have trouble with trust. Not only did he and Ardie seem to be on a different page during the interview after the Argentina loss, he also threw Ardie under the bus as well. He should know, as a communicator and man manager (his words), trust and loyalty is a 2 way street. When selecting, if you are going to state a particular policy, then you apply it to everyone. Both sides of the ball and they will be picked on form needs to be applied across the board. Previous coaches are irrelevant. He has the chance to build his own team and he hasn't taken it. He is his own worst enemy. I'm actually a Razor fan, but you can't talk about the Crusaders because that team was built by Deans and Blackadder. He added players as he needed to, one at a time. Razor is a good coach and I am sure he will succeed in time. He needs to look at himself and take the learnings he needs. Currently he is not the coach we know he can be.

      @insiderugbywithmark  2 дні тому

@Balance-v8x a great comment to open a discussion, so thank you for making it. First off, there is probably no one else around like me who wants Razor to succeed. All of my references to anyone I speak about in my comments in videos is me trying ( not always succeeding) to be constructive in my comments, after all, I am only a rugby fan, not an expert.
You say Razor is a magnificent coach, well that has yet to be proven at International level with this All Black team. Tiger Woods was a magnificent Amateur golf player, but he also transferred that magnificence to the PGA Tour.
A lot of people are referencing to the issues that exist in NZ Rugby. Other than overseas player restrictions, a policy that has been in place for 27 years, what are the other issues that you see with NZ rugby? I am keen to learn.

    • @Balance-v8x
      @Balance-v8x 2 дні тому

@@insiderugbywithmark Hi Mark, for sure, Razor still needs to transform into a world class international coach, but he has a good foundation and positive results to show that he can develop. It would've been much better, if he had some international experience before becoming the ABs coach, even if just a premier club in the Northern hemisphere, or like. But he didn't and is the coach now, and needs to grow, fast. In the business world you know that nobody grows without making mistakes and learning from them, yes? The problems he is facing are: 1. the downward trend in AB rugby since 2015, meaning he is already on the back foot. 2. NZ is a small country with only 5 million people and rugby has been losing ground as the number one choice for kids for a long time now. Soccer has always been a competitor, but NRL is going around schools and actively promoting the game - what is NZRU doing in this space? Then there is basketball, one of the fastest growing sports in the world. Compare that against the pool of players the Boks are drawing from, 60 million, and rugby at grassroots in South Africa is the healthiest it has ever been. The quality of talent coming through the ranks is phenomenal, and they are nurtured, looked after, it is a big deal. 3. The word GEES in Afrikaans means Spirit, again, Rassie built this in the country marred by politics and crime, and you see this positive result everywhere, it pulsate throughout the country. There is a very high level of optimism and support in the country. Sure, not all people support Rassie, or his choices, but he has the ability to unite people behind a strong vision and purpose. I don’t see much optimism in NZ, unfortunately, all I see is a destructive culture of war between North and South, the pundits are negative and hypercritical - almost panicky, there is no hope. People want instant gratification and winning at all cost, rather than trusting Razor to learn and grow. 4. NZ as a whole. Perhaps the rugby woes is a reflection of the state of the nation, it is not going well there and has not been well for a while. They have big issues to resolve - infrastructure, 3 Waters, housing, health, social, political, roads, living cost. There is a lot of stress in NZ at the moment, and in my humble opinion, it affects everything and everyone. I love NZ, and I love the ABs, I lived there for a very long time, and I do hope they get together as a nation and sort themselves out. I've always admired the Kiwi ingenuity, and hope to see the country bounce back towards a flourishing state.

Hi Mark, i humbly disagree re oz rugby. I'm not there, so i don't know, but from the outside looking in, i see very few ex-oz players coming thru as coaches (too busy doing podcasts). It's fine to bring in Schmidt, Rennie or others for the wallabies, but what quality of coaching are development levels getting? NRL is actually losing to AFL , cricket and football for playing numbers and eyeballs. Rugby union is below even that level of interest in oz, behind netball for player numbers, and even badminton! They're on the ropes IMO, regardless of what Schmidt does at int'l level.
Re Razor. 100% agree. I'm a cruz fan, big razor fan, but very concerned with what the team is doing. I do believe the squad he has is good enough for 80min performances, so I believe the issues lie mainly with Razor, his selections and strategies. I got quite up close and personal with some Aussie rugby folks during that time. I met with the likes of Nick Farr Jones, James Horwell, Tim Horan etc. So lets look at present day. One of Joe Schmidts KPI´s in his contract is to embed a coaching pathway program for Aussie coaches. As much as his legacy will be what the Wallabies do on the field, Rugby Australia have tasked him with making sure that the depth and quality of coaching improves a lot. All this as a lead up to RWC 2027. 68´000 people turned up in the weekend to watch Bledisloe 1, thats brilliant, and 1.7m watched on TV. Australia playing good competitive rugby is what the fans want, they wont desert the wallabies.

Razor has been a disappointment. Its not easy saying that because his record in super rugby speaks for itself. Bit the reality is that he started in conservative fashion selecting players from the previous coaching regime while he feels his way into international rugby. His inexperience has shown itself in his selections and tactics and the opinion of many that he should have gained some overseas experience first before applying for the all blacks job is looking more and more like excellent advice that he should have taken. The ppersonality of a coach rubs off on the team and the tendency to panic and concede yellow cards in the dying minutes of a game looks like something which we will have to get used to going forward.
